“he’s won a supreme”.
In which he beat the mighty Facile Vega..
January 17, 2026 at 18:44 #1750855“Sir Gino would absolutely piss himself cantering past Marine Nationale if he’d been sent chasing again this season.”
“And marine national isnt that good, record speaks for itself, best of a very, very poor bunch.”
Agree with both.
January 17, 2026 at 18:45 #1750856”If your knocking the GC winner then your knocking GDC , he could beat him in the GC … ”
I’m not knocking his performance in the Gold Cup. I’m knocking his performance as a racehorse overall. He’s 8yo and only has around 3 or 4 good performances to his name.
If he doesn’t bounce back and win another Gold Cup or at Punchestown, he’ll just go down in history with all the other flash in the pan types. He’s not a true Champion like Galopin Des Champs.
January 17, 2026 at 18:48 #1750858Working through this thread I find very little mention of Thistle Ask who ran an absolute stormer, had Il Etait Temps under the cosh before the home turn and made Jonbon work very hard for his victory. My mates at Kelso who backed him when he won at 5/4 in a Class 3 retrospectively had the best value of the season.
January 17, 2026 at 18:48 #1750859“Fine for Barry to big up his own horse but that was spiteful and unnecessary. Loads of chippiness about ‘The English’ too.”
I hadn’t heard his comments but I am not surprised. Connell strikes me as a rather prickly character. It is worth remembering that he fell out with the late Michael O’Sullivan and sacked him.
If memory serves, he went through plenty of trainers before taking out a licence himself. And just because he trains one good horse, he thinks he’s some sort of big league trainer.
I don’t dislike Marine Nationale as a horse but I hope he gets stuffed at the Festival.
January 17, 2026 at 18:49 #1750860“Green would you rather have the Champion Chase trophy or the the ROA chaser of the year award”
I’d rather have the ROA award I think- they don’t give it for the best turned out.
It’s like saying would you rather win the Derby or the Cartier horse of the year. I’d rather win the Cartier …because it means you won more top quality stuff than the Derby. Calandagan is a better horse than Lambourn, for example.
January 17, 2026 at 18:52 #1750861Lol Green I really don’t think you would but I did back you into a corner , the Champion Chase chase isn’t a best turned out award either

January 17, 2026 at 18:53 #1750862This is another extraordinary fact about Jonbon.
He’s never finished out of the first 2 in his whole career from the age of 4 to 10. He’s also never fallen.
23 of his 26 races at Grade 1 & 2 level and the horse has never been out of the first 2.
Honestly, I have nothing against Marine Nationale. I actually like the horse but would love to see Connell put in his place for the absolute tripe he spouted regards Jonbon.
Even if he lives to 100, he’ll never train a horse to win as many G1s.
January 17, 2026 at 18:55 #1750863Cork, the circumstances in which he sacked him were so petty also.
January 17, 2026 at 19:03 #1750864“If memory serves, he went through plenty of trainers before taking out a licence himself. And just because he trains one good horse, he thinks he’s some sort of big league trainer.
I don’t dislike Marine Nationale as a horse but I hope he gets stuffed at the Festival.”It’s not the horse’s fault that Connell trains him. :o)
January 17, 2026 at 19:06 #1750865Battleoverdoyen is prob in my top 10 fav horses , loved him , this is despite me loathing Elliott as a man

January 17, 2026 at 20:53 #1750876What a season by Thistle Ask. Turning in I thought he was gonna do it again, but Jonbon stayed on strongly. Still another brilliant performance. Running at 115 less then 3 months ago.
January 17, 2026 at 21:53 #1750881£11k was absolute theft , I imagine they need to keep the previous owner away from the knife draw ….

January 18, 2026 at 08:32 #1750910Maybe IET cannot handle a true championship pace, and thats why he’s struggled at cheltenham.
The two Sandown races in which he has looked so impressive Jonbon has set the fractions. We know Jonbon wont go a mad pace in front.
Jonbon was outpaced after going the early gallop, but he stays. IET never looked comfortable.
Agree with whoever was saying Marine Nationale is a very good horse, but not a great horse. Even if he wins another cc, he’s not beating much. Buvuer D’air won 2 Ch’s but isnt a great and he done far more in between than Marine Nationale, who, more than anything else struggles staying sound and isnt particuarly versatile, ground or trip. Thsts why he has so few G1s on his ledger.
January 18, 2026 at 08:36 #1750911If that’s the argument then GDC is a very good not a great horse , he won 2 so so G cups …. you can’t have it all ways

January 18, 2026 at 08:41 #1750912It amazes me how people on a racing forum don’t appear to understand the concept of form.
A horse’s ability is defined by the ratings it achieves, not the races it wins.
