I believe that the mantle has passed to Europe. To Coolmore, the Sheik, and the Aga Khan. Coolmore and the Aga Khan already have the breeding operations now it is up to the Sheik to deliver.Unless the Americans clean up their drug ridden operation they will never see the best of the Aga Khan’s horses running there.By the way we can look to the next challenge to Coolmore to come from France for the fillies( the Arabs) and from Ireland for the colts(the Aga Khan) with John Oxx.Not to mention Bolger who handed over the keys of the house to the Arabs.

Interesting to hear John Gosden interviewed on RUK tonight home from Santa Anita.
Strangely enough he made the point about the pro-ride suiting horses with a turn of foot as against the grinders from the States running 22 for the first 1/4 m and staggering home in 25….you need to put him right Bulwark.

In Raven’s Pass and New Approach they could have a couple of top-notch new sires to work with.

    Ots

He fooled a lot of us early season – or maybe he didn’t?
He certainly didn’t seem to see it out in the Craven and, even though he had been ridden prominently throughout his 2yo career, as a consquence he was held up in his next 5 races.
He had also strengthened up throughout the season, a point JG confirmed after his QE11 victory,

"He sees his races out well now and physically he has done very well".

which would entitle him to stay further at the end of the season than at the beginning which, after all, most 3yo’s do.
Horses fool us all sometimes, and it’s some comfort to know that a trainer of John Gosden’s experience was as much in the dark as many on here when ot came to predicting the horse’s true capabilities. After all, the main reason he ran in the 10f Classic was JG’s disquiet about the draw at Im.

Joking aside, I tend to agree that the horses stamina improved from Newmarket (Twice over defeat) to the BCC. As you say though, even trainers of JG’s experience are capable of misjudgment in their analysis.

Along with Teofilo, Street Cry, Any Given Saturday, Street Sense etc.

There’s more than enough young quality sires at Darley without adding two more into the mix. It’s a good job he bought up the Stonerside mares IMO.

Reference Ravens Pass’s Craven defeat, it was clear to see that he had a straight leg action and didnt like the ground that day, he wasnt exactly at his best in the guineas either.

Straight leg actioned horses can usually get up much more speed than horses with a knee action on a fast surface, but with cut underfoot they will tire. Ravens Pass tired out with cut at 1 mile but on a fast surface but he always IMO looked like staying further than 1 mile on every start on a fast surface. I did mention this after the craven but everyone was happy to call him a sprinter. I do agree that Ravens has generally improved as a horse this season both physically and mentally but I dont think he had any road to damascus change in stamina.

Horses change, it was the fact Raven’s Pass pulled too hard earlier in the year for people to think stamina was an issue. I certainly thought a mile was a max before the Goodwood Mile. Now he settles well there is no problem. However it may be different next year, particularly if in the care of different people.
