Thoughts on this?
Mine is that Curlin rates one of the best bets of the year at 7-2 – surely he won’t be beaten?
If so, by what, and why?

BennyB, my fellow Bristolian.
First, I must ask you a very important question. Are you a Red or a Blue?
As for Curlin. Not quite a penalty kick due to the presence of the hugely talented Casino Drive.
The Japanese-based horse is now unbeaten in three starts and won his prep race for the Classic on Sunday, his first start since May. It was his debut on a synthetic track.
You can see his performace by clicking the link below.

Curlin is still the one to beat and I think he’ll be a cracking bet in a double with Zenyatta.
October 14, 2008 at 22:15 #184766I’ll take Colonel John for this. Constantly improving and should be fresh for this.
There are the constant doubts about whether Curlin will like the surface but he should be good enough. If he doesnt take to the surface though Colonel John and Go Between should be very close behind him to steal it.
I’d love to see AOB finally step HTN up in trip for this one. He deserves to show whether he can take the extra 2 furlongs. Lets not forget, this was the 2nd favourite for the Epson Derby (a whole 4 furlongs further than he’s used to) just a few weeks before. He should get the trip well and deserves to show that he isnt just a mile specialist.
Preference, however, is for Colonel John to pull through once again.
October 15, 2008 at 00:10 #184779Much as I respect Curlin, and much as I would like to see Henry blitz this, I’m with Halfway to Heaven here – Colonel John the course and surface specialist to win.
Casino Drive is obviously a very talented horse, but his win this weekend was not hugely convincing.
October 15, 2008 at 02:10 #184793My moneys on Curlin, although not guaranteed to win I’m happy to have a run for my money at 4/1, i read somewhere he had a workout on the surface and the trainer was happy.
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
October 15, 2008 at 03:34 #184809The workout on Monday was enough convincing.
Casino Drive all the hype but when you forget about the deeper profile, he’s run 3 races, one maiden, two allowances and a Grade II. A little light on ammo?
Raven’s Pass would be the smokey.
Penalty kick.
October 15, 2008 at 03:42 #184811I’ve been a layer of Curlin because of the surface and the doubt about him running. I covered my ass today at Ladbrokes 7/2 as he now runs and opposition is beginning to look a little thin. I’d still be against him, but won’t take a big view now.
October 15, 2008 at 12:32 #184824Neither Bos – I live in Bristol, but haven’t always done so. Unfortunately for family reasons I support a northern team who play in black and white and sack their manager on a regular basis….
I follow City though, as my boss is the Chairman.

Very suprised both are running. Which one will be the pick of Murtagh? Both had long seasons and probably their last races before retirement. I would personally favour the Duke. Has the speed of a miler and has won over 12f which would suit the strong pace we are likely to see. 10f his optimum aswell. Just a question of whether he handles the track. I think out of the two, HTN will like this track as it will be firm. Perfect for him. Just think he is out of form at the moment.

You have my sympathy…
[/color:3dmctc0s]Good man…probably a wise decision.
[/color:3dmctc0s]October 15, 2008 at 21:21 #184903Very interesting.
Duke Of Marmalade has the perfect attributes to win a BC Classic. Tactical speed to maintain a position, a decent turn of foot and will stay the trip effectively. He has won over twelve furlongs, but ten is his optimum.
The fast pace will be to his liking and in a race that can get quite rough, he has the size to look after himself.
His size may be a positive in one aspect, but it will count against him on the tight, turning American tracks. After seeing Monmouth last year, my first impression was that Dylan Thomas was far too big to be at his best around the track. The same perhaps applies to The Duke,
He’s had a long season and, given the choice again, Aiden would not run him in the Arc. Judging by his effort in France, he now faces an uphill task, but he’s very tough.
Henrythenavigator comes into the race with a similar profile to George Washington. A Guineas winner who boasts an impressive turn of foot. He, too, will be stepping up in trip for the first time. Like GW, he’s a good looking individual, but perhaps lacks the size to look after himself against big, imposing animals like Curlin and Casino Drive.
He’ll handle the turns, will love the surface and can hold a position. The trip should not be a problem, but like the late George Washington he may lack the power in the straight, especially after a hard season.
Although both have been campaigned fiercely, I think their respective efforts last time out prove that Henry has more miles left in him this season.
However, The Duke has the attributes to make an impact and Henry has it all to prove over the trip and his profile does not suggest he can win the race.
I’d favour The Duke – JUST.
October 15, 2008 at 23:07 #184921I fear that Duke Of Marmalade may be unsuited by the track and be a little over the top at this stage of the season. Henrythenavigator probably doesn’t stay 10f.
Maybe best to look elsewhere. If you’re looking for something to bustle up Curlin, then Tiago and Go Between seem more likely sorts, both fresh horses who act on Polytrack.

Interesting article about the horse and the steroids issue on Mordins site, make of it what you will.To my eye he looks better now than at Saratoga, though still ‘smaller’ than Dubai in May.
October 16, 2008 at 01:33 #184947Don’t give either of them much of a chance. Giants Causeway, Galileo, Sakhee, Hawk Wing, George W, the list of our best turf horses unable to get it done in the BC Classic grows and grows.
It seems Coolmore are desperate to win a Classic – would it make such a difference to win a Classic over say a Turf or a Mile? I suppose it must do, or they wouldn’t bother.

It opens up a different market i.e America.
Whats more Henry and Duke might be beaten in the Classic but the likes of Curlin has as much (if not more) to prove on this surface. This year and next is probably the best opportunity a European horse has of winning the Classic.
October 16, 2008 at 02:08 #184962Anyone else think New Approach is not running in this as it’ll be his final aim for 2009 instead after they keep him in training for another year?
