It’s reads as if Murtagh has resigned rather than been sacked
November 8, 2010 at 17:14 #327018I believe they all resigned, certainly Kinane,Spencer and Murtagh. Fallon was forced out by the jockey club.Queally left after completing his time.
November 11, 2010 at 20:32 #327554First Kinane then Fallon,Spencer, now Murtagh. Four of the best in ten years. Why should anyone give up a good career for Ballydoyle. What exactly is the problem with Aidan. Are all the jockeys impossible to get along with?Jamie refused to go to the gym to please Aidan.Ballydoyle is not passing the smell test.
To clarify, Spencer messed up too many big rides, Powerscourt being a classic example, Kinane lost the job after throwing away the Breeders Cup Classic on Giants Causeway, Fallon HAD to go, he was given numerous chances to clean up his act, but Murtaghs decision has me stumped. Maybe he doesnt like the fact that a 16 year old schoolkid is out-performing him in his own backyard??
November 12, 2010 at 08:13 #327629In who’s own back yard did you say? Your concept of "out performing" would have many jockeys leaving the yard.Perhaps you are just reaching.Oxx didn’t look unkindly at Kinane’s "poor" riding skills.(I bet Aidan had a hard time watching the backside of StS and Mike)Seems like Kinane had no problem dealing with the stress of riding the wonder horse.Perhaps his age gives John Oxx a more mature vision.Jamie became champion jockey in England the following year.Says something again about rushing to judgement.Stoute seems such a mature person also in his dealings with Fallon. When it becomes "all about me" good people scatter.Where does the buck stop at Ballydoyle? The parade of world class jockeys is more impressive than the parade of world class horses.

I see what you mean, but I dont think Murtagh has been at the ‘races’ the past season or so, if you excuse the pun.
Stoute may have shown extreme patience with Fallon, question is, did he deserve all those chances? Me?? I dont think so, Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore stuck by him as long as they could, but he kept on pushing their patience, he had to be replaced.
Kinane is one of my all-time favourites, but to use the term, ‘dealing with the stress of riding the wonder horse’, actually had me laughing!!! Ask ANY jockey, and they would also love to have the ‘stressful’ job of riding Sea the Stars!!!! On his leaving Ballydoyle, he’s the one I thought was treated the harshest, as his only 2 real blemishes I recall both came at the Breeders Cup, on Giants Causeway and Rock of Gibralter.
Then theres Spencer…He shared a jockeys title in England with Sanders, and that was after riding something like over 1000 races in 6 months!!! Regarding Ballydoyle, he had messed up too many times when it mattered, even his biggest fan would admit that, and it was best for all concerned that they parted company when they did. Ballydoyle were losing big races they should’ve won, and Spencers confidence was shot to pieces.
Maybe Ballydoyle do make hasty decisions sometimes, but theres is an operation that can’t sit still, the World keeps spinning!!!! And Joseph O’Brien has made Murtagh look foolish on more than one occasion this past season
November 13, 2010 at 21:03 #327827November 13, 2010 at 21:13 #327828Well whatever you say.But in all the years I have watched Johanny I have never seen anyone make him look foolish. If as you say Joseph did I am surprised that Aidan would allow such behavior from any apprentice in his yard.Unless he is another Lester. Which I doubt. As an aside I believe that apprentices should serve out their time away from home.Like perhaps with Jim Bolger. No family, no favors .
November 13, 2010 at 21:49 #327833For no apparent reason the observation of Johanny Velazquez after coming second on Henrythenavigator to Raven’s Pass in the BC may throw some light on the problem of riding for Ballydoyle. To just paraphrase him, he said that but for the instructions he got from the trainer he might have won that race.Interesting! I thought at the time.

for the Irish Independent article, which is a nicely articulated piece of very thoughtful journalism. Do we know who wrote it? We could do with him over here!!

Probably Damien McElroy. He’d be the main racing journalist in the indo.
November 14, 2010 at 00:11 #327854Richard Forristal wrote it!
November 20, 2010 at 04:52 #16811Check out yesterday ,second race at Dundalk,Murtagh still riding for Coolmore, and winning for them! I thought he had severed his connection with them.
November 20, 2010 at 08:42 #328786Not until end of year
November 20, 2010 at 13:11 #328838He is not stable jockey to Ballydoyle.
Doesnt mean he can’t ride for Coolmore for Watchman or Stack or even AOB.
I imagine you still see Murtagh riding for them ala Mick Kinane
November 20, 2010 at 18:21 #328925So Coolmore is not why he quit. I wonder will he ride the Coolmore horses at other yards (besides Wachman’s,)eg Stoute’s? I suppose time will tell.
November 21, 2010 at 11:23 #329032Mick picked up plenty of spares for Ballydoyle/Coolmore after he vacated the post as did Spencer and Kieren Fallon.
I’m sure Johnny will still ride a few horses for them next season.
November 21, 2010 at 22:11 #329155I am confused who eactly retained Murtagh? Derrick Smith, Tabor, Magnier or AOB?
