If French Navy wins his next race – he’s due to run in the Criterium International at Saint Cloud during the next week – and wins it well, then Godolphin could have 3 of the top 4 or 5 in the betting for next year’s Derby.
October 25, 2010 at 17:27 #324515All 3 by Shamardal as well the Maroon silked brigade
October 25, 2010 at 21:05 #324556My mistake, apologise to all. Shame to see such good horses taken out of the classic picture so soon.Perhaps they will recover and win the Derby.

October 26, 2010 at 04:41 #324584hi guys i am from barbados nice to talk about racing with knowleadgeble races fans.
the argument years ago was godolphin vs coolmore but from 2008 till 2010 juddmonte and the aga khan has been doing very well.
juddmonte 2010 champions famomous name ,twice over ,frankel, workforce ,midday, redwood,.bywood, specil duty, priviso,
i think coolmore had a great ascot meet but geting there share of lashes recent this is racing not for one barn to win all the time.starspangle banner and cape blanco would have to be there two best horses of 2010.
the aga khan champions for 2010 are behkabad, shimrain, safartina group 1 winner in france.
October 26, 2010 at 09:43 #324599I really do not understand the Sheik’s logic. Who makes the call here, does he implore all horses to go to Dubai, purely for his pleasure? Surrounded by yes men I’m guessing.
October 26, 2010 at 12:18 #324632From th grovelling talk of the two Irish trainers Halford and Weld makes you feel proud of Jim Bolger (and Henry Cecil some years ago)when the Sheikh wanted to buy New Approach.I know Dermot does not need the money so why pander? Time to retire when that happens. If you want to train a Derby winner train for someone who respects you.How many horses is Jim Bolger training for the Sheikh now I wonder?Or Micheal Stoute?
October 26, 2010 at 13:07 #324652You’re not exactly comparing like with like there Andy.
Jim Bolger would own the vast majority of his good 2yos himself. He is therefore in a strong position when it comes to selling his horses on. He kept Teofilo to race as a 3yo despite it being confirmed between his National Stakes and Dewhurst triumphs that Sheikh Mohammed had purchased him to stand at Kildangan for Darley when his racing days came to an end. Similarly with New Approach he made sure the horse would remain at Coolcullen for his 3yo career after he sold him to race in Princess Haya’s silks.
He has sold other horses to the Sheikh that he has allowed move from Coolcullen to Godolphin – Creachadoir & Chabal to name two. He was aware that neither of those two colts had the promise of Teofilo or New Approach so he was prepared to let them go.
DK and Mick Halford aren’t in the same bargaining position with the Sheikh. The two biggest owners in DK’s yard (in terms of numbers) would be the Moyglare Stud Farm & Dr Lambe. Moyglare wouldn’t have anywhere near the numbers they had ten years ago and Dr Lambe seems to be concentrating more on the jumping game nowadays. DK has to pander to the likes of Sheikh Mohammed, Khalib Abdullah and Sheikh Hamdan if he wants to compete with Coolmore over here.
Halford would have only had an average sized yard divided up between jumpers and moderate flat horse up until three or four years ago. Most of his owners would have been small fish – syndicates and the like, until the Aga Khan sent him a few horses recently. Getting sent two yearlings from Sheikh Mohammed would have been a massive coup for the yard and I doubt Mick would be stupid enough to rock the boat. He knows well that the Sheikh will look after him and probably send him an even larger quantity of yearlings for next year.
The dire economic situation in Ireland has made it much harder for the likes of Weld, Oxx, Halford, Prendergast etc to compete with Coolmore. They are at the mercy of the Maktoums, the Aga Khan and Prince Khalib to send them decent stock because there’s very few indigenous owners with the wealth to invest heavily in bloodstock. Bolger was either very shrewd or very fortunate (take your pick) to latch onto Galileo from the start and his business acumen has allowed him to compete on a small level with Coolmore. If it wasn’t for the patronage of Maktoums and the Aga Khan, Weld, Oxx and Prendergast would be simply blown away every year.
I’m sure that Weld and Halford will be rewarded next season with some well bred horses from the Sheikh. Oxx has had a quiet enough year but as is nearly always the case he’s had a few nice late maturing 2yos out over the autumn and he’ll have the last Urban Sea foal to train next year as a 2yo.
October 26, 2010 at 14:00 #324669How in the name of all that is good and holy can you compete with Coolmore if you are not allowed to train the 3year olds?(Incidentally nobody is trying to compete with Coolmore in Ireland or any place else for that matter.Although Bolger and Oxx give it a good try!At least when it comes to the Derby.)How explain Henry Cecil refusing to go along with the Sheikh’s attitude towards women some years ago?He refused to go along to get along.Incidentally I was referring to the grovelling attitude of the two Irish trainers. "I am delighted you decided to cut off my balls etc etc etc and let me test your horses for the real trainer." "What a pleasure to be the toilet cleaner in your royal majesty’s palace".Once you grovel there is no getting up again.More power to Henry Cecil, he refused to submit.
Many of the good horses are bought inexpensively so what is to stop trainers from putting their money where their mouth is?As I said Dermot does not need the money. He is a very wealthy man.Amongst those who made him wealthy are those you mentioned, not the Sheikh.
Incidentally Jim Bolger gambled with purchases and brood mares and won!October 26, 2010 at 14:18 #324675How in the name of all that is good and holy can you compete with Coolmore if you are not allowed to train the 3year olds?(Incidentally nobody is trying to compete with Coolmore in Ireland or any place else for that matter.Although Bolger and Oxx give it a good try!At least when it comes to the Derby.)How explain Henry Cecil refusing to go along with the Sheikh’s attitude towards women some years ago?He refused to go along to get along.Incidentally I was referring to the grovelling attitude of the two Irish trainers. Incidentally Jim Bolger gambled with purchases and brood mares and won!The only way DK/Halford etc can compete with Coolmore in Ireland is with their 2yos. DK is reliant on Sheikh Mohammed, Sheikh Hamdan and Khalib Abdullah sending him decent stock because the money isn’t their for the likes of Smurfit, Lambe, Moyglare or even the O’Reilly’s to compete in the sales ring anymore. Why would he throw a hissy fit re: the moving of horses to Dubai when it would deny him the chance to train a number of well bred 2yos for the Sheikh in future years?
I’m sure he’d still have his plethora of Galway winners without the big foreign owners but how many listed/groups winners would he have? Moyglare usually have a decent animal once every few years but that’s about it. DK isn’t one to cut off his nose to spite his face and he knows that the Sheikh’s patronage is a positive development for Rosewell. I get the impression though that his heart is more in the National Hunt side of things nowadays anyway.
Halford compared to Weld, Bolger, Prendergast & Oxx is only a young trainer starting off. Why would he rock the boat now when two of the biggest owners in world racing are now sending horses to the yard? If he keeps progressing at his current rate, it’s not beyond the realms of fantasy that he’ll be the second biggest yard (behind Ballydoyle) in Ireland within the next decade. Rumours abound that Johnny Murtagh will be back riding for him and Ger Lyons next year.
October 26, 2010 at 17:33 #324717Nobody will ever become a big trainer without having classic winners. So give up on the dreaming, same applies to Murtagh.A two year old jockey better stay with Hannon or Fahey or some such trainer. At least there you may get a chance to ride a good 3yo some day but never in the likes of a Godolphin yard.Every jockey at Ballydoyle has a chance to ride one. Also the small owner will skip you like the plague knowing he must play second fiddle when the helicopter arrives.Dermot had his day when he trained for the likes of Paulson etc.now it looks like settling for 2nd fiddle.Incidentally the other Arabs don’t take the horses away to advance the career of who knows who.Halford never trained a classic winner. So do it without grovelling. It is one thing to sell out of the yard after coming up with the brilliant horse and being wealthy for life another to settle for playing the humble role of training for the Sheikh and giving up on your dream.Prendergast has already done the former. So far he has not done the latter.
October 26, 2010 at 18:07 #324732Mark Johnston is a feeder for Godolphin.
He doesn’t seem to mind and he is very successful so the likes of Halford will not rock the boat so to speak
October 27, 2010 at 01:12 #324812Yeah and everybody is happy picking cotton. So please don’t rock the boat.
He giveth and He taketh it away.
Praise the Lord. Yeah praise THE LORD we all cry.And send the horses to Dubai.November 8, 2010 at 09:18 #326948Hi !
I’ve just visited this forum. Happy to get acquainted with you. Thanks.November 8, 2010 at 15:56 #16707The Racing Post website reports that Johnny Murtagh will not ride as number one jockey to Ballydoyle.
Full story to follow …
November 8, 2010 at 16:11 #327006First Kinane then Fallon,Spencer, now Murtagh. Four of the best in ten years. Why should anyone give up a good career for Ballydoyle. What exactly is the problem with Aidan. Are all the jockeys impossible to get along with?Jamie refused to go to the gym to please Aidan.Ballydoyle is not passing the smell test.
