What determines the breeding is wherever the foal is dropped. If dropped in Curragh then IR. if in Newmarket then Eng.and so on.Like all things in life One stands to be corrected.

i also understand it to be place of foaling, and by extension the stud book in which the birth is registered.

eg if foaled in GB or Ireland, its details are in the General Stud Book kept by Weatherbys – see the "conditions of entry" link here:

    https://www.weatherbys.co.uk/stud-book/gsb-ntr

countries with stud books approved for BHA purposes:

    and Rule 8.3 here:

The last five renewals have seen nine of the fifteen placed horses emerge from a single figure draw, and six from a double figure position. It should be noted that only Treve has won from a wide berth during that time, but Orfevre came close from stall eighteen two years ago.

Conversely, 2011 heroine Danedream came form stall two, and Youmzain bounced from stall one when finding only Sea The Stars too good in 2009.

I think that if you’re good enough the draw will not stop you.

I suppose the influence of the draw on the likes of Avenir Certain (1) and Taghrooda (15) will depend on your preconceived opinion of their respective ability.

Of course, rather than just concentrate on the number, one should also look closer at those surrounding each contender and how that will influence the tactical scenario of the race.

Avenir Certain has Gold Ship, Treve and Flintshire on her outside. Gold Ship can go forward and track the pace, while both Treve and Flintshire will be waited with. Will that help her chances, or have a detrimental effect?

Of greater significance are the success of 3YOs (nine of the last fifteen placed horses were from the classic generation), and fillies have been well represented in recent years. Treve reigned supreme last year, while Dandream led home a 1-2-3 for the girls in 2011.

It’s quite confusing, especially with colts like Ectot, who I thought to be French through and through appearing to be Irish bred.

    Well said thm

I think – prior to the draw – Taghrooda was the more likely winner of the two but Tapestry should not have been three times the price, thus there was only one bet.

Fully understand your logic there Lee but another way to look at it would be Taghrooda’s more consistent profile and (for whatever reason, probably a belief the Oaks winner wasn’t at peak form) still being 4lbs higher than Tapestry on official ratings.

This morning their odds are 8/1 and 16/1, so that ratio has narrowed.

Anyway it’s wide open and you could be forgiven for thinking you were looking at the book for the Cambridgeshire rather than the Arc.

My other horse, backed in anticipation of soft ground, Kingston Hill, is totally friendless and out to 25/1 now. He has the worst draw and the St Leger winner hoodoo to overcome today.

Steeplechasing has said he will lack the pace to make the running and looking at his manner of win at Doncaster you would agree that, despite stamina doubts coming in, he actually looked to need the extra distance if anything.

If Roger Varian’s contender were in my ownership I would be keen to try to jump quickly and be as prominent as possible to make sure stamina is at a premium. That seems particularly important with some stamina doubts regarding some contenders and a concern that, in Ectot, there is a horse with a better turn of foot than, arguably the whole field and certainly superior to a St Leger winner in any given year.

He’s up against it and it could be we never got a chance to see him at his best this year but at least he bagged a classic along the way.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    If Ryan Moore rides

    Tapestry

like he rode ‘Found’ she’ll win.16/1 with Betfred is Xmas.I hope

    Kingston Hill

runs his race too as he’s the best 3yo 11/2m horse in Europe…..25/1 is an insult.

If I was to back any horse in such a wide open race , it would be Ectot .

My main bet is a cautious one – any French horse to win the Arc @ 11/10

I know , very stingy odds, but I have no real strong fancy for any individual horse. :?

That win makes her arguably the best filly we have seen this century.

Hat’s off to a brilliant horse and trainer. She must have improved a ton from her last run and she proved me wrong big style.

Proud of Taghrooda in third, she answered any doubt that she is better than Tapestry and I am pleased with Kingston Hill who had so much against him today.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

‘Greatest mare of the century’ is probably a little extreme given how weak this Arc field was. Don’t forget Goldikova, Zarkava and Zenyatta!

I think people were confusing ‘competitive Arc’ with ‘great Arc’ pre-race. The hopeful punts connections of the likes of Tapestry, Kingston Hill and even old Al Kazeem had at the race underline that fact.

Still, it’s a wonderful performance from Treve. She ripped them apart, gave away weight and showed how brilliant she really is.

Fighting fit tomorrow, she could trounce them again.

I’ll be backing Kingston Hill as a saver. I think he’s still learning and improving and whatever the draw, he lacks the early pace to make the best of a good one, and for a bad one to do too much damage, as he’ll be eased to the outside, I think and brought with his run.

    Good luck to all
    Joe

Well done, Joe. Kept the faith.

I was a massive supporter of her last year, but thought she would find a couple too good.

Kingston Hill has danced every dance this year from eight furlongs to one mile-six. He’s my horse of the year. Hope you got on 1-2-3-4.

Was it really a weak Arc?? Cant see it myself. I think there were a lot worse and it was well up to scratch.

Plenty of support on the exchanges for the second whom i thought was going to drift like crazy. I do think Taghrooda and Kingston hill came out with a lot of credit and you could have written the script for Harp Star

Magnificent filly. Magnificent trainer. I’m delighted for both. Treve could be called the winner a long way out

Thanks, Bos. Fine ride by Atzeni. Slow enough at the start to get his position and stepped up enough throughout to save being completely swamped.
