Stayers and Sprint races do not have as many Group 1’s.

I intend scoring the 5f King George at Goodwood as if a Group 1. Most years the standard of this race is just as good as Group 1’s. Battaash won it the last couple of years, Take Cover won before that and placed last year. Profitable and Myself placed in both KG and Kings Stand, latter going on to win Nunthorpe.

All Group races on the Ascot Champions Day card will be scored as if Group 1. British Champions Long Distance Cup is a Group 1 in all bar name anyway. Likes of Stradivarius and Order Of St George winning, Torcedor placing etc.

No 2 year old races are included in the competition.

No entry fee, 1 list per person.

Thought of an appropriate prize. If acceptable – I’ll provide a Timeform Racehorses Of 2019 as a prize to the winner? :rose:

Fully intend going ahead with this now. I’ll finalise the rules and put it in a different thread. However, if we don’t get many enties it won’t be worth doing. So if fewer than 20 the competition will be cancelled before the 2000 Guineas.

Actually, if the Nell Gwyn isn’t until the 16th April, it won’t be the first turf Group race/start of the competition. Newbury’s Spring Trials day is on the 13th. So it starts off on the Saturday with the John Porter, Fred Darling and Greenham.

I’ve been thinking about Jac’s “Reserves”. I was against it to begin with. Because who is to say a horse is injured? Also enabling someone to pick a horse from thousands of possibilities, who’s come to the fore in their minds since the beginning of the season/competition… Although a list does perhaps rely too much on luck; horses remaining injury free and comparitively easy for a 10 to be an effective 8. So in that way substitutes maybe good.

Coming around to the idea of Reserves Jac. :rose: Possibly…
TRFers name 12 horses from the start (or at least before the first Group race on 2000 Guineas day). 10 “To Follow” and 2 “Reserves”. TRFers are then able to substitute any of the 10 with 1 or both of the 2 Reserves at any part of the season (in one or two seperate substitutions). This enables replacement of injured horses or just a tactical substitution… But substitutions MUST come from those two Reserves . Also helps those of us who get our lists down to 12 and find it difficult to discard the last two. :mail:

Glad you’re warming to the idea of Reserves Ginge :good: as long as The Reserves themselves don’t go on the injured list  then what would happen? You know what horses are like.

I personally would get a bit fed up if my Reserve started winning Group races and he/she wasnt earning me any points. Would prefer that we could substitute in a chosen one or two horses at a time of year decided by yourself, perhaps just before Royal Ascot. If people choose to substitute with a horse or horses in top form does it really matter. As we all know form can sometimes take a drastic turn around second part of the season and some of us might have a late developer or two in mind to boost points for the Group races that occur later in the year.

It all seems to be coming together really nicely Ginge and you are putting a lot of time and thought into this.

Hi Ging, love your idea of a flat ten to follow. No good at it, as I occasionally entered the tote’s version. However for a bit of fun would love to enter it, you need someone to bring up the rear. To be honest with my knowledge I’d be lucky to score. :mail:

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Up to you to substitute your reserve in, Jac; before it starts winning Group races – all part of the skill. ;-)

Imagine how I’d feel having a top horse in my list from the start that nobody else identified in April that runs for the first time at Royal Ascot… Only to find 20 TRFers substituted him in from nowhere just a few days before Royal Ascot. At least with named substitutes TRFers have identified the horse from the start as one of great potential.

It certainly doesn’t matter if substituting a chosen one or two horses, as long as those actually were chosen and did not choose themselves from subsequent events/runs. TRFers can choose to substitute with a horse/s in top form – as long as it’s one identified as a top horse from the start. Could even use the substitution before showing top form, in order to maximise points. Realise might be frustrating TRFers identifying in mid-season a possible “late developer” and unable to substitute. This is essentially about long-term identification of top horses. Part of the art of substitutions could be in finding (in April or early May) possible “late developers” – those who may not show their best/score points early.

However, Can see there are advantages, perhaps the biggest advantage in allowing Reserves – who have not been named from the start… Is it helps prevent someone running away with the competition who’s the only TRFer with a particular big scorer; eg an Almanzor. Making the competition more competitive/a tighter result come the last/Champions Day. But the person with that knowledge deserves an opportunity of getting at least a fair advantage. So if (and only IF) there is a Substitution Stage at a certain time of the year – needs to be later in the season. Possibly in the week prior to the King George VI at Ascot in late July – As well as Britain’s Premier open 12f race is also in time for Glorious Goodwood and Deauville. Giving enough time for those picking a top scorer from the start to gain a fair advantage; while also soon enough for Reserves to affect the result. Having a number of races left from every distance variety – Sprints, Mile, Middle-Distance and Stayers. Important to be before both Ascot’s and Goodwood’s King Georges, Sussex Goodwood Cup and (I believe) Prix Maurice De Gheest. That said, anyone who’s named the Sussex and Goodwood Cup winners from the start is entitled to feel frustrated if 15 TRFers name them just the week before.

Would both 2 named substitutes (to be used at a time of the TRFer’s choosing) and 2 unamed ones (at a particular time of year) be too many? Might have to be one idea or the other?

What could be a good compromise is having both – all 4 possible substitutes – but with just 2 (or possibly at a push 3 of those 4 substitutions and/or transfers allowed? ie if using 3 the other 1 remains on the bench (in the stable) unused. Just as the remaining subs are unused once a football manager has made his three sbstitutions. I may need help with the work/time involved with a time of year substitution. Although if TRfers do it by quoting (copy and pasting) their Ten To Follow together with in bold both disgarded and substituted racehorse – shouldn’t take too long. :mail:

We could then decide in 2020 what worked and did not work.

It would be good to get other TRFers views on these issues/alternatives before finalising rules. :good:

I intend producing a list of races. This is what it would look like:
One month per post may be better to follow; but it’ll show the races that have already gone together with their relevent results – position, horse, price and race points scored by each horse. It’ll also show the Group points of each race coming up. First figure Group Points awarded for the win and where applicable second figure second and third figure third. eg Group 2 races getting 400 (colts and open) or 320 (fillies) for a win, second 200 or 160. Group 3’s 200 for a win or fillies 160 ets. Defoe getting 200 Group for a Group 3 win + 13 Betting Bonus Points for a winning SP of 5/4 = 213 Race Points. To give you some idea I’ve included the early 2018 Results (with their 2019 dates). Showing what it would look like after 1000 Guineas Day.

    I’m sure you’ll get 20 minimum ginge
Also like the idea of having two reserves nominated from the start
another idea although it could be allowing 1 wildcard that is not included in the reserves although it could get a bit complicated

    Cheers Jack and Nathan.

Together with the above run down of races/points, I’ll also do a list of points won by horses.

Points won up to and including 1000 Guineas Day:

    Addeyebb 415
    Billesdon Brook 2780
    Brando 245
    Cracksman 1009
    Crystal Ocean 210
    Dan’s Dream 260
    Defoe 213 210 423
    Forest Ranger 280
    Funny Kid 243
    Happily 168
    Invincible Army 214
    James Garfield 230
    Jimmy Two Times 208
    Kitesurf 214
    Laurens 362
    Luminate 172
    Mabbs Cross 245
    Masar 235 208 443
    Musis Amica 262
    Nelson 217
    Order Of St George 202
    Pharrell 368
    Recoletos 496
    Saxon Warrior 1090
    Sevenna Star 219
    Soliloquy 200
    Stormy Antarctic 218
    Tip Two Win 700
    Torcedor 223
    Waldgeist 226
    Who’s Steph 260
    Wilamina 208
    Wootton 220
    Wrens Day 544
    Wuheida 338

Figures in bold show the total a horse has if scoring more than once.
I’ll need to do the actual list with horses names in a line, as a 7 month competition’s horses would stretch from here to the moon if one horse per line. :mail:
All 10 To Follow lists will be in alphabetical order too.

There is no need for any TRFer to calculate any race result. All I hope he/she can do is take the scores from the above list and score their own 10 To Follow by copy and pasting their list and then adding the relevent points may be once a week.

eg: After the 2018 1000 Guineas:
    Gingertipster 2839:
    Battaash
    Cracksman 1009
    Crystal Ocean 210
    Expert Eye
    Happily 168
    Harry Angel
    Laurens 362
    Roaring Lion
    Saxon Warrior 1090
    Stradivarius

    Substitutes
    Magical and Enable

I wish! Actually wouldn’t have been much different to that.

However, scoring is not a prerequisite of entering, I do not want anything discouraging TRFers entering.

For interest will also try and maintain a top 10 horseslist:
Top 10 scoring horses after 1000 Guineas Day:
    Billesdon Brook 2780
    Saxon Warrior 1090
    Cracksman 1009
    Tip Two Win 700
    Wrens Day 544
    Recoletos 496
    Masar 443
    Defoe 423
    Addeyebb 415
    Pharrell 368

Billesdon Brook scored big – as a 66/1 Group 1 winner. Still don’t know how she did it.

At the start of the competition I’ll also see if I can produce a list of horses together with the names of TRFers who’ve picked them.

Ginge ..I”m more than happy with however you and the majority want to play it :good:

Think 2 reserves would be enough, as you say it could get complicated, but a sub later in the season could light up the comp a bit more.

Anyway I’m in :good: and looking forward to choosing my Stable for the flat :yahoo: Jac

Yes, you’ve convinced me Jac. :rose:
Am now leaning towards 2 “Substitutes”, named at time of entering/enabling your 10 To Follow list…
As well as: Nathan’s/your 1 “Wildcard” (any horse) deployed in the Wildcard Transfer Window between 20th and 27th July.

I also believe early entries are at a disadvantage. To help, it should be easier to change entries made before the official start date. Am thinking up to three replacements/changes allowed before the competition commences – for whatever reason – instead of needing a definite injury/word from connections etc.

If you’ve got any questions or would like something changed in the rules below, let me know before a new thread is opened some time in late March/early April:

2019 EUROPEAN FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION

Pick 12 horses! 10 Horses To Follow plus 2 Reserves/Substitutes (more on that later).

TRFers can select (almost) any horse trained anywhere; but only score points by finishing in the first three in British, French and Irish Group 1’s, first two in Group 2’s or win Group 3’s. Winner of the competition is the TRFer scoring most points. With little two year old form to go on in April/May (and to cut down on my work) no two year olds will be included in the 2019 European Flat 10 To Follow.

    Start And Finish:
Competition starts with the first turf Group race of the 2019 British flat season on Saturday 13th April; Newbury’s Spring Trials (Greenham & Fred Darling) day. Any previous Group race on that day will not count towards this competition. Competition ends with the result of the final Group race on QIPCO Champion’s Day card on 19th October. (Any subsequent Group race on that day will not count).

    Rolling Start:
To take full advantage of the maximum number of potential Group/scoring races in the competition, TRFers can post their 10 To Follow before the official start date. But they can choose to enter any time between then and entry deadline – 2000 Guineas day Saturday 4th May. However, (with exception of Newbury Trials and 2000 Guineas days) entries must be posted at least 1 hour before your first runner is due to race (in order for that run to count towards your total). TRFers might decide it’s (for them) a tactical advantage to enter later, forgoing early points for (possibly) a clearer view of the season to come – your choice. ALL entries need to be completed/posted BEFORE the deadline – when the starting gate opens for the 2000 Guineas. If attracting fewer than 20 entries the competition is canceled.

Altering Your Entry (prior to the official start date):
TRFers posting their 10 To Follow BEFORE the first British Group race on Saturday 13th April can change up to THREE horses at any time and for any reason PRIOR to that official start date. It would help me if this was done by: Copy and pasting your original entry and then clearly showing the change/s wanted. Please do NOT delete the discarded horse/s completely from the list, just put “OUT” alongside it and “IN” against the new horse/s. Any entry made AFTER the official start on Saturday 13th April can NOT be altered.

Please feel free to let other TRFers know of any horses on the easy list, sold to race abroad, injured or worse. Will need help in producing a list of these horses, as I don’t keep my ear to the ground as much as some.

    Strictly 1 entry per person:
Only theracingforum members (TRFers) are entitled to enter and only 1 entry per person. Anyone entering twice under different usernames will have both entries removed/discounted/disqualified.

    Prize Money:
No entry fee and the Prize of a Timeform Racehorses Of 2019 will be awarded to the winner. I see in the jumps 10 to follow some TRFers have generously donated to prize money. Am sure if anyone wants to donate to this competition it will be gratefully received – although I will not personally hold the purse. We can decide prior to April 13th – depending on how much is donated (if any) – how it’s distributed (eg whether the person finishing second gets anything).

Betting Bonus Points will be calculated from the official British or Irish SP.

    French Betting/Racing:
For French race Industry SPs quoted on the Racing Post Website will be used. These often use different odds to the table above; worked out by either X 10, X 20 or X 30. eg 63/10 as a Group 2 winner would be 63 ‘/, 10 = 6.3 X 20 = 126 Betting Bonus Points (alternatively just 2 X 63 = 126) + the 400 Group Points = 526 Race Score.
French Jump Racing’s “Group” races (including bumpers) are not included in this competition.

    Walkovers:
Only Group Points for a win will be awarded for a walkover. No Betting Bonus Points.

    Postponements:
If the 2000 Guineas is postponed the entry deadline date is also put back to whichever Guineas is run first (2000 or 1000). If Newbury Trials day is postponed the competition starts with the first European Group race that day. If Champions Day is postponed the rearranged Champions Day card will be the only subsequent meeting to count. If NO rearranged 2019 Champions Day (eg equine flu) – the competition is decided on results up to the intended October 19th finish. The 2019 European Ten To Follow is canceled completely (no winner, no prizes) if there’s fewer than 100 days of British racing.

    Subsequent Disqualifications:
Competition results will be determined by whatever happens on the day. For this competition any subsequent disqualifications will not change results. So day of race stewards enquirey reversals DO alter results. Subsequent appeals or doping disqualifications etc do NOT alter results.

    Tie:
In the event of a tie, the entry with most points from Group 1’s will be the decider. If still tied then highest scorer on Champion’s Day will be the winner. If still undecided the whole of Royal Ascot. If still a tie the one with the biggest total using the best 9 horses in each list; then 8 etc until a winner is found. If lists can not be separated, it’s a tie and their prize money – if any – will be divided equally between joint winners.

    Dead Heats:
In the Event of a dead heat the points each individual horse would’ve scored by an outright win (or second or third) is divided by the number of dead heaters. eg a 3/1 Group 1 outright winner scores 1090 (1000 Group points + 90 Betting Bonus Points). Therefore, if he is one of two dead heaters – that 3/1 shot scores 1090 ‘/, 2 = 545. If three dead heaters 1090 ‘/, 3 = 363. Any 12/1 shot would’ve got 1360 for an outright Group 1 win (1000 + 360) and therefore 1360 ‘/, 2 = 680 for two dead heaters, 453 for three.

Two Group 2’s Counted As Group 1’s:
Even with recent upgrading of Ireland’s Flying Five and the Goodwood Cup to Group 1 level, stayers and sprinters have fewer Group 1’s than mile and middle distances. Goodwood’s “Group 2” 5f King George Stakes and British Champions Long Distance Cup will be scored the same as Group 1’s. This also means all Group races on the Champions Day card are scored as Group 1’s.

    Replacements:
Just as a football manager can replace three of his eleven players, TRFers are allowed to replace up to THREE of their TEN To Follow during the season using substitutes and/or Wildcard Transfer Window.

    Substitutes:
At the SAME TIME as naming your TEN To Follow, TRFers also need to name TWO reserves (substitutes) who do not count towards your totals unless/until substitution. These can either replace injured horses or be used tactically. Points scored by the sub prior to substitution are not counted towards your total… And any points previously scored by the discarded horse are lost. Substitutes can be deployed at any time of the TRFer’s choosing; but need to be completed at least 1 hour before its next start for that run to count towards your total. TRFers can NOT reintroduce a horse once discarded racehorse; it is possible to substitute a substitute. To use a substitute it would help me a lot if TRFers: Copy and paste your entry, please do NOT delete the discarded racehorse. Clearly mark your sub to be “IN” the 10 and your discarded horse “OUT”.

    Wildcard Transfer Window:
TRFers can make 1 Wildcard Transfer. ANY horse of your choice (other than two year olds) can replace one of your “ten”. But can only be deployed during the mid-season Wildcard Transfer Window. This window begins after the last European Group race result run on Sunday 21st July and closes 1 hour before the intended off time of the first European Group race on 27th July (day of the King George VI at Ascot). Any Wildcard transfer of a horse running during that particular week needs to be completed at least 1 hour before running for that run to count towards your points total. To use a Wildcard Transfer: Please copy and paste your 10 To Follow entry, then clearly mark your Wildcard “IN” and horse you want replaced “OUT”.

Cheers Ginger, I appreciate the time and work you’ve put into that, and I hope that
it takes off. I can’t imagine you not getting your minimum 20 you require, I think it
will go down well in here. Like Nathan, I’ll go back over it again a bit later, and if
there’s anything I think is worth raising I’ll post it up. It looks well thought out to
    me :good:

Looking forward to it Ginge. I understand it is for Euro races only, but how about adding x amount of points for a win at the Breeders Cup ? Something like the Turf Sprint, Fillies & Mares Turf, Turf & Mile which will have plenty of Euro runners.

I think all those races are run on the same day so would be an exciting finale to the comp.
