Many thanks for all your kind words.

    Botchy,
With only a couple of exceptions the Breeders Cup doesn’t attract as many top European runners compared to Champions Day. Turf Sprint hasn’t been won by a European in ages (none even placed in at least 10 years) and no Breeders Cup stayers race worth the name. It’s two (sometimes three) top races, but (for us) run very late at night. In this competition I wanted all horses of all distances to have as fair as possible equal chance of scoring highly. Beauty of Champions Day is it’s a fitting finale for European horses, with sprinters, milers, middle-distances and stayers; 6f, 1m, 1m2f, 1m4f f&m and 2m all catered for… And for those with tighter distance requirements – whichever type of horse is not featured on Champions Day has a race at either Longchamp – ie 5f, 7f, 1m2f f&m, 1m4f – or Newmarket – 1m f&m… Best Mile fillies can (and should) then test themselves in open company on Champions Day; as 1m4f f&m do in the Arc. Stayers have races at both Longchamp and Ascot, but it’s harder for those racing at the extreme distance to double up so quickly – can’t remember any doing so – therefore only really one opportunity of scoring points. Stayers also having fewer top races at other times of year…

Even with all the above; had the Breeders Cup come before Champions Day would have given serious consideration to including it, Botchy. Havng the competition effectively in limbo for a few weeks – without much happening between Champions Day and |Breeders Cup – not ideal either. Just think it’s important to end the competition with a bang on Champions Day. :good:

    One (hopefully) last thing:
Looking at what previous years results would’ve achieved (horse scores) – in order to keep scores as tight as possible for a close finish on Champions Day… Should there be a limit to what each horse can score? ie Occasionally a horse might run (score points) in 9 races of the season; a fairly small number 8, some 7, most between 6 and 5, some will obviously run fewer… Also, should one running 8 times with 3 Group 1 victories and 5 seconds, 3 X 1000 = 3000 + (5 X 400 = 2000) = 5000… get the same number of Group Points as a horse running 5 times and winning all 5 Group 1’s; 5 X 1000 = 5000?

Therefore, would it be best if only the best 6 scores of each horse count?
Am in two minds over this, so would appreciate some TRFers thoughts. :good:

Personally Ginge I would rather let the horses score in all the races they run in. If a particular horse is good enough to win 5 Group 1’s I’ll just be hoping he/she is on my list ;-)

I think it adds to the fun and hopefully skill of choosing 10 horses that are going to improve through the season. Let’s face it early season Group winners can sometimes find it hard to keep that form all season, so having a mixed bag of runners is key, also a fair mix of colts and fillies, sprinters and middle distance with a good distance horse. It won’t be easy but it will be fun. :good: Jac

Will keep it to scoring in all races and review it (as all rules) at the end of October for future years. :good:

Thanks GT. In my diary (though I’m sure I’ll spot the thread anyway!)

Just finalising the Flat competition rules to hopefully have it up by this Saturday March 30th; two weeks before the 13th April start.

    Just wondered:
How popular is the star horse/”nap” in the Jumps 10 To Follow competition?
Would TRFers like it added to the Flat competition?

I must admit I like the idea of a “star horse” Ginger, especially if you can pick one that
isn’t what would be seen as the obvious star. It would be risky, but it could give you that
little bit extra that you need in the competition, and it’s nice if you manage to unearth a
    little gem.

This is looking like a terrific competition Ginge, with a helluva lot of work gone into it.
    Well done :good:

One other thing; this rule for substitutions:
“any points previously scored by your discarded horse are LOST”.

Thinking it’s fairer to change this to “ARE counted”?
TRFers having 10 horses at any given time able to score points… But in effect, allowing TRFers to keep the points scored by one of their horses who may have got injured… but also allowing it to be substituted. Just as a footballer can score a goal, be substituted… and that goal counted towards the score at the end of the match. (Horses can be substituted for any reason – not just because of injury).
