Agreed, and that being stated, I would join the swelling numbers of Purwells on any street coner – I am a Wednesday Derby man and cannot change the damn spots. B-)

Oh dear 😮 the page has turned and the many have been silenced.

Nothing upsets a narcissist more than his posting winding up bottom of a page!

“The Whip” nudging towards 40%, but the alternative coalition still has over 60%.

Might I confess to often counting the posts to plan an assault and I have a pet name for the last post on a page – the sacrificial lamb – little Ruby.

The people that want a change will often reply and vote in these sort of fact finding opinion contests. I suppose you can say that the majority want change but that sort of ascribes the statistics in here to the silent majority who are probably mostly lazy
    retentionists.

    How about these alternatives…

    The Tap
    The Clip
    The Swat
    The Boon

Where were these alternatives last week?

Pick the one you like most and I’ll add it!

I didn’t come up with the alternatives last week. Just a random thing today.

The Boon is my preference for these two reasons…
    1) The word ‘Boon’ means advantage in a good way. A blessing, benefit, godsend, etc.
    2) Boon, to me at least, sounds amusing in combat. I see it as an implement that gets the horse to go faster without the sharper meaning of ‘whip’.
Now imagine a Commentator yelling “The jockey has gone for the Boon!” 😀

No need for euphemisms, just call it what it is: a riding crop. Whips are flexible and have a piece of leather or rope at the end that can be cracked to make noise. Crops are one solid piece. Harness racing drivers use whips, jockeys use crops. Simple.

    vs.

With respect, Miss Woodford, it’s not about “euphemisms,” it’s about whether a fundamentally-altered device here in the UK should retain its current actual name in the 21st century environment.

The world is, for personal wont of a better term, more “woke” than it was and public opinion influences political policy.

And I suspect it’s tacit acknowledgment of that which has led to most votes for a new NAME, not a new or existing euphemism, for the implement in this poll.

My er “lady friend” says she is going to “whup my ass”

The modern device does indeed seem to be a riding crop rather than a whip in the technical sense, so calling it as such is logical as Miss Woodford says.

But whether it is the most attractive term for modern sensibilities is another matter – it still has a somewhat harsh sound to my ears.

As with most things, subcategories lie within. Relating to just ‘whip’ could mean anything from Cat o’ Nine Tails to Bull Whip to Crop…
So when it comes to horseracing, finding a suitable design of a whip to satisfy the moral majority of a sensitive generation of people is a delicate path to tread. A suitable name to accompany the design makes a lot of sense.
I like Ian’s motive behind this topic.

‘What I am getting is – despite this being a horse racing forum – the number wanting a change of name is almost double those with “defiant resistance”.’

First past the post in a nutshell

For sure, there is an anti “The Whip” Rainbow Alliance which would sweep “The Whip” out of office were this a PR poll!

Not even defiant resistance in my case.

It’s the fact it’s called a whip/stick and there’s no point pretending otherwise!
