I agree it is a whip/stick change the name and I will still call them Opal Fruits.

The more I know the less I understand.

“It’s the fact it’s called a whip/stick and there’s no point pretending otherwise!”

Most people will always see a whip as a implement of punishment. It’s classed as a weapon by many too.

The name needs to change!

Good luck getting the horseracing / equestrian community to stop calling it what it is.

Well, given the choice between accepting and embracing a name change and increasingly-adverse public opinion leading to the extinction of the sport I know what I’d choose.

I don’t actually care what the “equestrian community” as a whole call it, it’s people specifically in racing that are key.

Anyway, outside of racing, are any of these other sports using the “pro-cush,” which, for like the millionth time on this thread, isn’t the same device at all?

I realise this is a somewhat tongue in cheek poll but it’s also a serious point. After a lot of discussion I’m coming round to the idea of pro cush or similar. The current front runner amongst alternatives, persuader, is slightly troublesome in that it implies that these horses need to be ‘persuaded’ to run. One of the pro racing arguments is that they love running so why would we need to ‘persuade’ them?

Pro cush is not an existing word like most of the others so it sounds less euphemistic. Something that sounds like a brand name or description for a new design may well be preferable to co-opting an everyday word.

“The Persuader” is an already-existing euphemism within the game – it’s little better than “The Whip.”

I’m coming round to “The Cush” – new name for a new implement.

“The Whip” traditionalists (“gammon” to some!) fighting back with an increased share of the vote.

But the anti “The Whip” Rainbow Alliance (bunch of tree-hugger appeasing, Woke, snowflakes to some!) still commands a PR majority.

The battle lines are increasingly drawn!

I have to say, it’s pleasing to see civilised debate across the two threads. It’s inevitably an emotive subject that will bring out strong opinions on both sides but I know I have learned a bit from it and I’m sure others have too. A healthy mix of jest and serious comment too.

    @IanDavies

As others have said already, stop the whip being used except for safety/ correction and public perception becomes less of an issue 🤷‍♀️.

Have you met any of the “public” lately, Archipenko?

Generally awful blokes (and blokesses) who hear the word “whip” and assume it will be used for malign purposes.

I fear, therefore, that notion is wishful thinking on your part!

I was still editing my post 🫣.

Some people in eventing use the cush whip, but it’s not mandatory.

It’s arguably a moot point as other equestrian sports have much stricter rules regarding use. For example, you’re not allowed to hit a horse to make it go faster during a cross country.

No worries, Archipenko, as Richard says I think it’s been a cracking – and hopefully witty at times – debate on a serious subject.

France Galop has amended its rules on the whip. If a jockey uses it 9 times, it is a mandatory disqualification by the raceday stewards.

The supposed limit in France is 4 strikes. In that case, a jockey would have to be seriously dim to use the whip 9 times.

There is a separate argument about whether or not the rule is correct but if the limit is set at 4 and the jockeys know it, why does disqualification not take effect at 5?

It is similar here but with the figures being 6 and 10 instead.

Many moons ago at Towcester Robbie Supple was riding a horse for a certain owner (totally escapes me).
But the commentator made the comment before the race that Robbie was instructed not to strike the horse.
    Finished at the rear..

What ever name is used, it never looks good. But its part of racing. As above, I would not put money on a horse where striking the horse is forbidden.

Makes one wonder if Harchibald may have won a few more races if his opponents were limited to six strikes at Cheltenham.

The Wip is somewhat a late developer.
He is trying to get away from his father.

“The Wip” is the warped brainchild of an (admittedly engaging) madman!

That’s said, it’s doing just as well as – and is attracting more publicity than – my rather feeble original suggestion, “The Prompt.”

    All the entries
    seem to have a
    rather decaying smell
    of doom about them.
    It’s rather like who
    is the last one
    on death row !
