Telling the BHA how to do their job is a recurring theme both here and elsewhere.
And surely rightly so on many occasions.
Here’s a one-off chance for TRF (or the closest TRF can come to a consensus) to point the way forward on a topical issue.
What, if anything else, should “The Whip be called?
Here are the runners –
“The Whip” (no change)
“The Collector”
“The Magic Wand”
“The Motivator”
“The Cush”
“The Communicator”
“The Prompt”
I’ve decided to get this up and running now, as the functionality gives scope to add further options if required (proposer and seconder please).
Let the voting commence!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 4, 2023 at 06:43 #1658268It should be noted that you may struggle to get equestrians (people who ride/ work with horses) to call the whip something else.
The only one that might work is to call it a “stick”. As it’s regularly called that already. But then I am not sure that word helps with the perception issue.
August 4, 2023 at 08:09 #1658274You’ve misssed one off your list.
Roger Moore and Tony Curtis would not be impressed.

I voted for “the whip” it is what it is although not as brutal as before but that’s what I call it and will always call it. Even if it gets changed I’m still calling it the whip.

I have done – and ZERO votes for it so far!
The Persuaders, sensational theme tune from my all-time favourite composer, the actual Series, though?

August 4, 2023 at 12:34 #1658337Touching on Archipenko’s point about how difficult it will be to get people to change from “whip” or “stick”, how about “guide”? This still works in combination with stick, and guide stick doesn’t sound as harsh as stick by itself.
It also emphasises the control elements as well as the encouragement ones.

August 4, 2023 at 14:04 #1658357I think it was Aussie Jim McGrath who started using “the persuader” in his commentaries on the Beeb.
The SSR presenter at Bangor has just used “the pro kush”.
Persuader for me all day long.
August 4, 2023 at 14:07 #1658359“how about “guide”?”
And where was this suggestion yesterday?
Or the day before?
As in before the poll was started!
Added – grumpily!

The more I know the less I understand.
August 4, 2023 at 14:59 #1658378Mr Grumpy Davies, “guide” was only PROMPTed (pun intended) by posts made today!

Interesting to see “persuader” doing well in the poll.
