The deputy leader, who is currently Lucy Powell, would probably step-up. As Harriet Harman did after Brown and Miliband left in 2010 and 2015
February 9, 2026 at 09:16 #1754037“When the Tories were in power it was always somebody else’s fault. Numerous examples of the party itself and their press chums blaming anyone but themselves when things went wrong.”
The press pack was on quite cosy terms with Starmer when he assumed office.
Labour does have a habit of thinking it is on the moral high ground, cloaking itself in virtue in opposition and portraying its rivals as not just wrong but as bad people – even immoral – as well.
When these posturing moral hypocrites are inevitably hoist by their own petard, it is difficult to muster any sympathy for them. I couldn’t blame anyone taking some sort of satisfaction in their fall.
And they never learn anything. When Labour goes back into Opposition in a few years time, it will start all over again. The same tired routine of how they are so much better than everyone and how only they can restore trust in public life. It is farcical.
February 9, 2026 at 09:18 #1754038Harman only assumed leadership of the Labour Party and opposition. I am not sure if the same situation would apply for becoming Prime Minister.
February 9, 2026 at 10:06 #1754040Good point. Lammy’s possible as he’s done PMQs when Starmer’s glad-handing abroad; or Darren Jones, one of whose jobs is the new position of Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister
If Starmer resigns but stays on until a new PM is elected, no probem; but if he does so with immediate effect someone will have to fill the interregnum. Just a ‘safe pair of hands’ who has no intention of standing in the election itself. Dropped catches all round?
February 9, 2026 at 10:34 #1754042Isn’t that Lammy’s job though to step in when the PM is absent. Angela Raynor is topping most bookies lists.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 9, 2026 at 11:12 #1754044I’m a lifelong Labour voter and am in despair at what is happening. If Keir does stand down my only hope is that he becomes foreign secretary, because he has such a good relationship with foreign leaders. This has taken years to build. As to who would replace him I’m at a loss. I really don’t like Lammy. I do like Rayner but not as leader. Always thought of Darren Jones as a future leader but not quite yet. And I hope another leader will continue to rebuild our ties with Europe.
February 9, 2026 at 11:53 #1754045The rats are escaping the sinking ship.
Tim Allan, Starmer’s Executive Director of Comms has resigned. He’s only been in the post 5 months.
Full on implosion now.
February 9, 2026 at 12:01 #1754047“If Keir does stand down my only hope is that he becomes foreign secretary”.
There is not the remotest chance of that happening.
February 9, 2026 at 12:07 #1754048“Tim Allan, Starmer’s Executive Director of Comms has resigned.”
I expect Starmer had full confidence in him as well.

Whoever takes over will get to play at being Prime Minister for up to three years but they will not exactly be inheriting a promising situation.
It brings to mind one of Private Eye’s greatest moments, from half a century ago:
February 9, 2026 at 12:57 #1754054There seems to be some confusion here: I was considering Lammy and Jones as caretaker leader/PM if Starmer were to resign with immediate effect, not as contenders in the election for a full-time PM.
February 9, 2026 at 13:00 #1754055I’m easily confused

The more I know the less I understand.
February 9, 2026 at 13:21 #1754057The rumour mill is suggesting that Anas Sarwar, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, is going to call on Starmer to resign:
https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/25838402.anas-sarwar-call-keir-starmer-stand-prime-minister/
Only a matter of time before the podium appears in Downing Street and Starmer tells us that all he ever wanted to do was serve the country.
February 9, 2026 at 14:03 #1754062The message must be: if you don’t want the UK to be like ICE’s America and your politics are right of Labour, then the only sane option is the Liberal Democrats. At least their leader would not grovel to Trump. If Reform win the next general election then it really is the end of an era; this country would be finished.
The problem with Starmer is that he is not a politician and has never worked out who will stab him in the back. The cleverest politician in the last fifty years was Thatcher; she neutralised opponents before they could strike. Starmer will survive if he learns from experience.
February 9, 2026 at 17:53 #1754078Latest – the prime minister has the public support of the cabinet, as well as Angela Rayner.
So he may survive this one.

Means v little, Mike. The large Labour majority means Starmer and his cabinet are at the mercy of its backbenchers and the big trade unions.
Labour backbenchers have ‘forced’ PM/Cabinet hands over Inheritance tax threshold for farmers, Winter Fuel payments, Welfare reforms.
And it takes just c80 Labour MPs to support a ‘stalking horse’ candidate to force a leadership election. If or once that happens the trade unions ‘join’ the vote.

February 9, 2026 at 19:30 #1754083If it happens soon, it’ll be a backbencher acting as a stalking horse candidate. Then once c80 Labour MPs support that person, Starmer goes on the list of candidates and that’s when a more prominent Labour front bencher puts him/herself forward.
