Mark, that was a brutal test today, I thought. Silv Conti is not what he was but he came under pressure shortly after 4 out and as they turned in he was miles back and struggling like a plater: he climbed over the 3rd last. Massive stamina test imo

True Joe, but a strongly run 3m around a flat track on heavy ground is not as much of a stamina test as a strongly run 3m2f110yrds around an undulating (stiff) track on heavy ground.

Should have made it clear my response was aimed at MarkTT
You are right, of course, but how many GCs are run on heavy ground these days?

On good or good-soft CC should be ok.Value Is EverythingNovember 19, 2016 at 19:05 #1273463Botchy1 – they are caveats, not harsh criticism. He’s a smart horse but he was allowed his own space on the inside and the opposition had questions to answer. Trainers rarely win £120,000 that easily
SC – it was brutal and I’m not stating he wouldn’t stay in a Gold Cup…but Cheltenham in March would be a stiffer test and I’ve seen many a horse travel like that before the turn for home, then watch their stride shorten up the hill and fade from first to fourth.
He’d have to improve between now and March ( provided the race doesn’t cut up badly )and you have to admit that’s unlikely.November 19, 2016 at 19:09 #1273465Both foot perfect!!!! Thistlecrack never jumped one single fence that perfect like Cue Card and Coneygree did today…. Fantastic race
The world doesn’t revolve around Thistlecrack’s jumping. That’s just a bonkers comparison.
Well, then tell me why Cue Card who looked like a machine today that could go another circuit is 6/1 for the GC and Thistlecrack just 4/1. They’re both jumpers, aren’t they?
Age.
Most horses are on the downgrade by March of their 11 year old season.

Cue card looked to me like he hurdled a couple today, getting across the fence very fast and almost too economical. Coneygree, to me, looked like he lacked peaked fitness and I reckon he would make a live Grand National horse. Of course both Thistlecrack and Coneygree have jumped Cheltenham, we all know what happened to Cue Card there. One possible reason for the price difference. Coneygree is a monster of a horse and will be a different kettle of fish in his next race, he reminds me of Denman.

Make your mind upI know you like to live in a World Of Definites, Nathan; to take a definite opinion and therefore in your mind be “proven” right if it happens. Hate to brake it to you, but the Real World is all about probabilities.
On good or good-soft going in a truly run race around 3m2f110yrds at Cheltenham – I’d say (now he’s older) Cue Card now has around a 90 to 95% chance of staying the trip. So yes, “should be ok”.
Am sure you’d like to believe Cue Card is 100% certain of staying the trip, but until actually showing he stays the trip there’s a small chance he won’t stay.

Yes and that’s what I said the going could ‘probably’ be too quick for him in March

On good or good-soft CC should be ok.Doesn’t matter what the ground is Cue Card only has one thing that can beat him in the Gold cup…His jockeys mental approach.
November 19, 2016 at 21:42 #1273488Brennan couldn’t have been more careful at the last today, Gord, eh? Almost got off and placed CC’s legs over the fence one at a time before hopping back on

Joe I almost feel I’ve stolen your horse from you!I’ve said it it before but I’ll never forget the way he laughed at a horse I followed off a cliff in First Lieutenant in the Ryanair of March 2013,that made me realise he was special but it took to last years Charlie Hall to jump on your bandwagon pal.

Correct!!! I think Paddy was counting the million when running downhill to 3 out….

My thoughts exactly. Still think coneygree will be the one to beat in march but that was a brilliant display. Along with sire de grusys win a fantastic day to watch jump racing.

In these days of watering, do you think Cheltenham will allow the ground to be on the firm side of good for the Friday, Nathan? I don’t.
So presumably you’re talking about GOOD ground?
How much form study have you done to reach this conclusion?
Had Cue Card not fallen last year when still travelling strongly/best of all (on GOOD ground)… where is the evidence he would’ve been below form?
If GOOD ground is “probably too quick for him in March”, then how come on GOOD ground in the Melling Chase of 2013 Cue Card finished closer to Sprinter Sacre than any other horse did when SS was at his best? Without the best horse since Arkle, CC would’ve been a 19 lengths winner!
If GOOD ground is “probably too quick for him in March”, then how come on GOOD ground he put up one of the best performances ever seen by any novice chaser in the Arkle of 2012? Without Sprinter Sacre) he would’ve been a 22 lengths winner!
Even won the Champion Bumper by 8 lengths from Al Ferof on GOOD ground.
…Do you really believe there’s a better than 50% chance it will be “too quick for him in March”?
Where is the evidence?
