What a day, what a horse, what a yard! Well done Cue Card and his backers.
Should CC win the King George (and T’crack must be an awful lot more likely to go Feltham now), what will Tizz do come the Festival with a Million at risk???
November 19, 2016 at 15:33 #1273405Both foot perfect!!!! Thistlecrack never jumped one single fence that perfect like Cue Card and Coneygree did today…. Fantastic race
Eh?

He is far behind them in the jumping department
Performance was excellent and don’t wish to take anything away from Cue Card, but to say he “jumped perfect” is crazy.

The world doesn’t revolve around Thistlecrack’s jumping. That’s just a bonkers comparison.

I don’t think Thistlecrack was ever a serious contender for the King George. As for the Gold Cup there is nothing to suggest that Tizzard will do anything but try and steer both horses to the Gold Cup. One runner wasn’t enough last year.
November 19, 2016 at 15:46 #12734095/2 for the King George won’t last long.

Suspect Thistlecrack will still go for the Gold Cup Joe, but it won’t take many mistakes in prep races for Tizzard to think about the World Hurdle.
Value Is EverythingNovember 19, 2016 at 15:59 #1273413It was slightly tongue in cheek GT and Stilvi, but if the Irish challenge comes to nowt and it begins to look a two horse race with the Gold Cup pot + a million quid and another 300k for the World Hurdle…they wouldn’t be human if they weren’t tempted.
I expect T’crack to wow them next weekend and that might, in a way, add to their problems.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
November 19, 2016 at 16:06 #1273417One thing with Cue Card:
Before today I had reservations about him staying the Gold Cup trip.
I don’t think there’s much chance of stamina being a problem after a performance like that over 3 miles on very soft.Coneygree is imo better than the winning distance today makes out. Johnson looked after him after Cue Card went clear. Taking that in to account, the radstock horse not far behind his best.
Value Is EverythingNovember 19, 2016 at 16:09 #1273419Where was W P Mullins?
Value Is EverythingNovember 19, 2016 at 16:34 #1273422I couldn’t decide if the Bradstocks were brave or foolish running in those conditions with a fragile horse. I thought the race might set him back and I hope he comes out of it okay. Ran a remarkable race.
There was a question raised after the Wetherby run over CC’s going preferences and Brennan seems today to have confirmed that, which makes Nathan’s point a fair one.
Different owners so hopefully the question of back-scratching will not arise and we’ll see them both on GC day.
Mark’s point about stamina drives home, for me at least, how fine a chance CC would have had bar his fall in March.
Final point: even though I backed SYAM at 10s EW – 7/2 today was mental. And they say Thistlecrack is poor value! Suspect now that BDM was wrong at Carlisle and made the winner look much better than he was. His jumping today failed to convince at all and his Gold Cup hopes are dead.

Think you’re taking too much notice of connections excuses Nathan. Brennan’s comments about Cue Card’s Wetherby reappearance being due to the ground don’t seem to add up. Other good ground performances… Going really well in last year’s Gold Cup when coming down (every chance at the time – had he won would they be saying good ground doesn’t suit?). Aintree and Kempton came with the Eppiglotis problem… And one of the best performances you’ll ever see by any novice when second to Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle. Also has an action that should suit good ground.
When Cue Card disappointed in the Charlie Hall, I thought because of connections confidence beforehand he was spot on and that age was probably catching up with him. However, it’s fairly obvious to me now he wasn’t fully fit – just like the previous year. Taking in to account he probably went for home a little too soon there (other horses that raced prominently well beaten) the 3 1/4 lengths 3rd giving away 4 lbs to Irish Cavalier… was of a similar standard to winning by 3 3/4 lengths at level weights from Dynaste in 2015… When (like today) improving a lot from Charlie Hall to Betfair Chase.
It’s a lot easier to come to the right opinion after the race.
Although I said Cue Card’s stamina wouldn’t worry me now for the Gold Cup, depends on the ground. If normal mid-March good or good-soft no problem. If soft or heavy I’d still have niggly doubts.

Well, then tell me why Cue Card who looked like a machine today that could go another circuit is 6/1 for the GC and Thistlecrack just 4/1. They’re both jumpers, aren’t they?

Possibly be too quick for Coneygree as well. It will be interesting to see what comes out of Ireland to possibly challenge him based on that performance, as well as his stable companion of course.
I really believe that Vatour was the only horse to beat him myself. RIP.

[/quote]Because Cue Card never gets the recognition he deserves. I dont know why, but it always seems to be that way.

The caveats would be that he took the inside rail on a flat track against a field which included one returning from injury after a year off, a couple of doubtful stayers and Conti appears to be on the downgrade.
An extra two furlongs having gone a quicker pace ? I still think Don Cossack beats him last year even if he stayed upright and this years Gold Cup might have more strength in depth.
