I think KC was pretty keen on Old Benny last year.
October 15, 2009 at 01:29 #253413Old Benny is certainly one to keep an eye on when he returns to the track. I would imagine A King would be happy for him to gain fitness on the racetrack, whilst all the time keeping his hcp mark the same and the horse gaining vital experience.
He ran a fine race in the ’08 Scottish National which is encouraging for the Aintree version.

Boychuk 2001
He’s inconsistent; there’s no reason why he should have run so moderately at Ffos Las in August, while his return at Cheltenham on Friday was no more than satisfactory. We had earlier planned to run him in the Summer National at Uttoxeter, but he scoped badly. Rounded off last season by ending a long losing spell when winning at Cheltenham; he’d slipped a stone in the ratings, so the h’capper gave him an obvious chance. He’d be a possible for the Hennessy[/color:2kixn891] if ground conditions were suitable and if we could get him up a few pounds he may be one to enter for the Grand National[/color:2kixn891]; he’s best on fast ground but he could cope with the conditions you normally find at Aintree nowadays.Kornati Kid 2002
Great big horse, who could be very good this season if he gets lucky. I didn’t put his disappointing run in the four-miler at Cheltenham down to a lack of stamina; he was beaten too far out and ran as if something were amiss, though I never found out what. [worrying?] He’ll have entries for the Hennessy[/color:2kixn891] and Welsh National[/color:2kixn891] and, being very effective on soft ground, Chepstow could suit him.In my brain Hennessy AND Welsh National also means Grand National.
Parsons Legacy 1998
It’s strange for a horse his age, but he’s very susceptible to any coughing that might go around the yard; that accounts for why he has run so few times in recent years. He was quite well fancied for the Grand National, and while some thought he didn’t really take to Aintree, in my opinion he was making ground when falling at Becher’s scond time. I haven’t even thought about whether we might go back and try again. [?] He returned at Cheltenham three days ago in the same race he’d won 12 months earlier, but could finish only fifth off a 5lb higher mark. We’d had one or two little hiccups at home, so I wasn’t too disappointed. He was staying on again at the finish and wants further than 3m nowadays. Also, he’ll come on for the run.Willie Mullins
[/color:2kixn891]Arbor Supreme 2002
We’re looking at the Grand National[/color:2kixn891] as being his main objective and his campaign will be geared towards Aintree. He needs plenty of distance and while he appreciates very soft ground, he seems to jump better on better ground. We’ll probably mix it with him and run him over hurdles and fences.Ballytrim 2001
I’m hoping he’ll prove good enough to be aimed at the Grand National[/color:2kixn891] as I’d love to run him in the race. If that doesn’t work then he could be an Irish National horse. He is an out-and-out stayer and is a good jumper.Irish Invader 2001
He did really well over the summer and has come back a lot stronger. His owners are keen on going the Aintree National[/color:2kixn891] route and we will probably mix it with him between hurdles and fences and aim at a spring campaign.Polmar 2003
He’s had a wind operation, but he is in good order and will be aimed at staying handicap chases.Paddy Power, Leopardstown [/color:2kixn891]

Pomme Tiepy 2003
She proved disappointing over hurdles and will go back handicap chasing. She likes soft ground and we might look at a campaign geared towards running her in the Aintree National[/color:2kixn891].
Snowy Morning 2000
He’s a difficult horse to place as he doesn’t seem up to the top races over fences, while he is quite high in the h’cap. We’d like to have another tilt at the Grand National[/color:2kixn891] with him and, hopefully, he will earn his keep by running in Grade 2 and Grade 3 chases and also by running over hurdlesGary Moore
[/color:2kixn891]Or Jaune 2002
He’s being trained for the Hennessy – that’s his number one target[/color:2kixn891]. I don’t know what happened at Aintree last season – he’s bit of a temperamental horse and takes a bit of getting to know, so perhaps he just didn’t fancy it that day. I thought he went there fresh and well, but he just didn’t perform like he can do – he should have run better than he did. He’s a real stayer and must have soft ground.Ferdy Murphy[/color:2kixn891]
New Alco 2001
He is an ideal type for the Hennessy[/color:2kixn891], which will be his first race back. He missed last season with an injury but won very well first time out[/color:2kixn891] two seasons ago at Carlisle before disappointing in the Hennessy, when things didn’t go well for him. He likes to run fresh, so he’ll be interesting at Newbury, and he has proven time and again that he is a force in the big h’caps.Orki Des Aigles 2002
One of his owners is from market Rasen, so it was fantastic that he won last season’s Lincolnshire National. He got some birch in a joint that day, which caused his subsequent absence, but the same race will be the aim again, and if we can get him up the h’cap a bit, he’ll go for the Eider[/color:2kixn891] as his other joint-owner is from N’cle.Poker De Sivola 2003

£381.07October 20, 2009 at 02:29 #254380Thought Pomme Tiepy had a worrying habit of falling over a lot; not the ideal Aintree type imo….
October 20, 2009 at 02:42 #254385Have a vivid memory of Clare Balding accusing Pomme Tiepy of being a big girl in the paddock last season.
October 22, 2009 at 18:39 #254813Pomme Tiepy has fell once an unseated once. Both times when in contention.
Agree that she does not seem a likely Aintree sort, maybe clutching at straws with this one….
October 22, 2009 at 18:52 #254818Didn’t realise Pomme Tiepy finished 5th in the Irish National [was too busy watching Niche Market win!]. Only know that she always seemed to fall over when I saw her on the telly. Racemares generally seem to look after themselves [ar more sensible than their male counterparts..]
October 22, 2009 at 19:14 #254820Seem to remember she was well talked up for the Irish National, started 9-1, stayed on without troubling the winner in 5th. She isn’t the most stoutly bred animal in the world but obviously has some talent about her…
October 24, 2009 at 19:55 #255174I just wanted to say on the Pomme Tiepy age issue that lots of us seem to be prepared to back 7yos ante-post for the GN, but are averse to doing 12yos even though they’ve got a better record.
I suppose it is the looking forward to, and the potential for improvement. However, come the race day I’ll make sure I’ve got all the 12yos covered.
53p @ 44 Comply Or Die (Line in the sand)
£2 @ 120 Irish Invader (top-up)
£6.44 @ 120 Garde Champetre (top-up)Only noticed this evening that Siegemaster had run this afternoon. Decided to add him as I’m fairly sure that Gigginstown will run at least one of War Of Attrition, Siegemaster and One Cool Cookie, and I don’t like to worry. I have only just noticed that several Gigginstown horses have military or combat-style names. Decided to overlook last season’s dodgy novice jumping. Ben will be tut-tutting about the dosage, but the horse has good Conduit Mare Profile numbers to compensate.
£5 @ 160 Siegemaster (Saver)
Genuinely is a saver, as I’m planning to bet £800 in total. Almost halfway there, so I’ll have to start rationing myself.
October 25, 2009 at 11:23 #255271The only horses I’d consider backing at the moment would be Over the Creek, Old Benny and possibly Character Building [at least with the latter if he remains sound it’s pretty certain he’ll be aimed at the race. I’ve lost too much money recently on non runners! [oh, and State of Play who, again will be aimed at the race..and then there’s Russian Trigger…….]
October 25, 2009 at 19:36 #255370Can’t help but feel that Star de Mohaison is going to become Paul Nicholls new Eurotrek! Don’t think he’s as good at bringing horses back as the Pipes. However, does fit the profile of classy RSA winner with dodgy legs. Perhaps he should be moved to Gordon Elliotts.
Looks like you’re right Moe, and I’ve blown 80 pence.
Although still only eight years old, Sir Robert Ogden’s talented chaser has been dogged by injury for the last three years, and the effects of those injuries are set to persuade connections that retirement for Star De Mohaison will be the kindest option.Ogden’s racing manager Barry Simpson said: "We will see in two to three weeks time if he is up to going back into training, but in all likelihood that’s very doubtful, and there’s every chance he will be retired."
October 25, 2009 at 20:41 #255384Only noticed this evening that Siegemaster had run this afternoon. One Cool Cookie will end up in the canal jumping that Canal Turn. He has to go right handed.
I like Siegemaster a lot but Dessie was talking about Cheltenham Gold Cups and such about him yesterday. I doubt they’ll aim him at Liverpool this year. He needs a bit of cut anyway to be at his best.
War Of Attrition will be prepped for the National. Its a pity he missed out last year. Hopefully his chance hasn’t past him by. He’d take to those fences like a duck to water.
October 25, 2009 at 20:57 #255386Thanks for that IC. Hopefully you’ve saved me a few quid on One Cool Cookie. At least I’m forewarned anyway.
Although he hasn’t run lefthanded for the past 2 and a half years, he was entered in the GN last season. I suppose if they’re serious it will be quite easy to have another run at Leopardstown again.
I know because he is a good horse that Siegemaster will likely not go for the National, but my attitude was that it was only costing me £5 for peace of mind (and I wanted to add a new horse, and he was the one I alighted upon).

Hi
a couple that aren’t being quoted in the betting, but I think might be being aimed at the GN are Ungaro and Hoo La Baloo.
. . . .
I’d really love Hoo La Baloo to win the GN, he only runs a bad race every 5 or so. He ran 12 times in 2007, and 9 in 2006. And for the breeding purists, his grandfathers are Northern Dancer and Arazi

For those of you having images of him running 2m around Sandown and Ascot, he came 3rd in the Whitbread, and ran in a 4miler last time.
I’m not so keen on Hoo La Baloo this time round. Older and wiser. Having Arazi in the pedigree is a distinct liability, but I knew that last year and was just pulling people’s legs about Arazi. Also, the number of bad runs have increased. There is also Carvillshill’s question: "Is there any proof that the horse stays?"
In addition to which they are planning to do a State Of Play and go to the National fresh, which I now agree with Moe is something nigh on impossible to do if you want to win.
Erm, Paul, you don’t own the horse.October 26, 2009 at 15:43 #255508I’m not sure about another crack at the National
; I have this theory that some horses will jump round there once, but don’t like it the next time, and he may be one of those.
Well, I suppose Stewart won’t press Nicholls to run My Will in the National, if he’s already got Hoo La Baloo doing so.
October 26, 2009 at 15:54 #255511Didn’t run in the National, because he would be topweight. So they ran him in the Topham instead, where he was um err topweight.
Jeez, with all the horses being aimed at the Becher that we’re coming across, they’ll be a field of 30 this year!
all the top handicaps – I take that to include the National, especially with the Becher target as well.
October 26, 2009 at 16:01 #255513Hoo La Baloo was my favourite horse a few seasons ago [he seems to have been around forever, doesn’t he?] but has turned into a bit of a nearly horse. I’d love to see him win something really spectacular [perhaps not the national, though..win everything else Mr N but leave the National to others;not a race that he puts at the top of his tick list of important races to win, however it will possibly become the one prize that he hasn’t won at some point, and may start to niggle him].
