Parson’s Legacy didn’t run between being Pulled Up December 12th and the Grand National. I know he likes Good ground, but surely there was something wrong with him last season.Don’t particularly fancy Kilbeggan Blade, but the price was available. I’m a little bit concerned by this comment:-
6Dec08 Sandown (30GS ,RPR142)
The horse is very precious to us. – owner Ann DooceyMaybe they won’t risk him next year?
There has been £10,000 matched in the betfair market, and £200 is mine, so I represent 4% of the market.

June 25, 2009 at 20:30 #236345I’m still lacking the energy/enthusiasm to become a full-time member of the Forum again, but here are the latest two additions to the pot. They’re both well-known horses, so I won’t bother saying anything about them at the moment. I’ve asked to move to the night shift, so maybe I’ll be full of enthusiasm when I return home with my Racing Post each morning.

I’ve got tomorrow off work, for the first time since Derby Day, which might be the only day I’ve had properly off in a month. I’ll add some info which I compiled a few weeks ago.
June 29, 2009 at 23:24 #237066I did this a month ago, but have only just got around to typing it up.
The trend races for the GN seem to be the GN, Becher Chase and Topham, Welsh National, Irish National, Hennessy just (first 5) and RSA. The 3m4f H’cap Chase at Haydock that I think is currently called the Blue Square Gold Cup is also a trend race, but GN winners have run in it rather than run well in it.
Well here are the list of the placers for the past few years – there ought to be a reasonable chance that the 2010 Grand National winner is amongst them – does anything stick out to you?

Oh So Risky quilt silks registered for £24,000
By Gavin Beech 6.10PM 11 NOV 2008ENTERTAINMENTS entrepreneur Howard Spooner on Tuesday paid £24,000 at a sporting memorabilia auction in London to have the famous crazy quilt silks of the Oh So Risky Partnership registered in his name.
The patchwork-coloured silks were originally registered by Crazy Gang member Chesney Allen in 1950 and had more recently been associated with the Oh So Risky Partnership made famous by the 1991 Triumph Hurdle winner.
The 37-year-old owner-breeder, who owns the Grade II listed Clapham Grand theatre in London, has seven horses in training with Jessica Harrington including Grade 2 winning hurdler Personal Column. He is also a patron of Willie Musson and Jane Chapple-Hyam’s yards and has an estimated 40 horses in total, including a small band of brood mares.
Spooner said: "To be honest I thought these would go for a lot of money and I expected to have to pay more than I did. They are a piece of history and I wanted them predominantly because of my father who is 80 years old. He used to play professional rugby for Harlequins and he’s a great follower of my horses, so he’ll be thrilled to see them running in these colours."
Almost 100 lots featured in the racing part of the sale at Sotheby’s Olympia auction rooms and another high profile item that attracted significant attention was the Aga Khan’s green and red silks worn by Walter Swinburn when he partnered Shergar to his famous Derby win in 1981. The silks were bought by a private collector for £7,500.
He strikes me as the kind of chap who’d like to take a tilt at the GN, but Mrs John Harrington would probably go for the Midlands version instead.
[/color:3ofsr4qw]July 20, 2009 at 21:53 #240253I’ve been meaning to post a run down of runners by trainer in the past 10 years, but I’ve been a little bit too lazy to finish off the last couple of years.
I was mainly interested in how many runners the Alners have had, but I’m not too sure how many they’ve had who would have been likely candidates. I’ll steer clear of Miko De Beauchene for the next several months.
Anyway, it looks like I am still getting Working Tax Credit, even though I’m not too sure I’m still entitled to it. The thing to do is invest it wisely, in case the Government ask for it back. I put about £16 on Flintoff and about £4 on Coe last Monday, and I’ve just put another fiver on Coe.
Here is a re-consolidation, before we lose track.
Kilbeggan Blade £14 @ 150.36
Russian Trigger £19.90 @ 85.22
Preists Leap 48p @ 100
Garde Champetre £17 @ 80
Parsons Legacy £10.57 @ 102.43
Bothar Na £16.99 @ 120
Golden Flight £39.69 @ 125.31
High Chimes £3.99 @ 164.99
Himalayan Trail £26.99 @ 118.67
Merigo £37.94 @ 103.31
Morgan Be £7.97 @ 165.01
Coe £13.11 @ 165.42
Flintoff £19.41 @ 174.66
[/color:23gu3lm7]Drumconvis £24 @ 1[/color:23gu3lm7]Total bet comes to £265.04
As a total of £13,646 has been bet on betfair (doubled to take account of the layers) I represent 4% of the total that has been bet on betfair.

I hadn’t been following things too closely in the past few weeks, and I have just read the story from 19 July that MdB has moved from the Alners to Venetia Williams.
I suppose that now makes him a betting proposition.

August 23, 2009 at 04:33 #245337Not sure about Ballytrim; I quite fancy him but I’ve read that he’s a bit of a dog and the stable don’t think much of him and that race that he won in Ireland is about as good as he is. Going back to the bit about the Oh So Risky colours, for sentimental reasons I’d have to back a horse carrying those colours, Oh sO Risky syndrome being the affliction I suffer from which means I have to keep backing horses because I know the day I don’t is the day they will win. What has happened to Church Island; he has been entered for races and then not run in them. Over the Creek was mentioned elsewhere; I’ve backed him ante post a couple of times but he never seems to run; he did, however, come second to Old Benny at Cheltenham and there’s no one better than the Pipes for patching horses up and winning big races with them. Hang on; I’ve got my Bally’s mixed up…………!!!! What with that and so many horses playing musical stables it’s all a bit confusing. Think I need some sleep…..
August 23, 2009 at 06:17 #245339I’ve followed Ballytrim ever since he ran second in a point at Punchestown behind the unfortunate Mr Nosie. I think its unfair to label him a dog to be honest Moe. He’s just an exceptionally slow horse who needs bog like conditions to be seen to best effect.
He’d need conditions to be similar to the day Red Marauder won to be competitive at Liverpool in my opinion. A lot of our raiders seemed to get hammered by the handicapper last year both at Cheltenham and Aintree so I’d be wary enough about backing them in the big handicaps next year anyway.
Church Island ran poorly in a handicap hurdle at Killarney last month. He was entered in the Galway Plate as well as a few other engagements but the ground in Ireland just hasn’t been suitable. I think a trip back to Kerry for the National at Listowel next month is on the agenda. Alternatively it could be the Munster National at Limerick if the ground is heavy for the Listowel race.
August 23, 2009 at 15:05 #245364I’ve still got my ‘Ballys’ in a jumble and my computer’s playing up so I can’t unjumble them! there was the Bally that won a race in Ireland at the end of the season; he’s the one I fancied for the National but people said he probably wouldn’t get in anyway; also the one
that I then read the above comments about. He really stayed on well at the end of the race I saw. I probably misinterpreted what they meant. Then there’s the NTD Bally that I really fancied for this years race but whose jumping completely fell apart and he didn’t run in the National anyway. I do like Church Island and hope to see him bag a few good races this year.
August 23, 2009 at 21:37 #245414Just did a search for "Bally" on the RP site, and there were 988 matches!
Might be slightly ridiculous for me to express an opinion about Ballytrim, when the only time I would have seen him race was when he came 8th in the GN trial that Forest Leaves won, but we’re supposed to be able to read and interpret the form book and come to an opinion, so here goes.
First of all, need to make sense of when Willie Mullins said "that was his GN". I think that is more a reference to him having been pulled out of last year’s National(s), rather than that being how good he is (the horse is only 8, after all). Mullins immediately followed up the statement by mentioning next year’s GN and Irish GN, so they are very much on the agenda.
I suppose the horse being a bit slow is a bit of a concern, because he has never won anything classy, and is working his way up the h’cap, rather than having achieved anything notable in the past.
Although he has run on Heavy ground a lot, he seems to act on Good okay. I’m not worried about the ground being too quick for the horse at Aintree. The policy seems to be to have the Grand National course on the easy side of Good. Any rain that falls in the last couple of days before the race will quickly turn the ground Soft. Also, I’m going to write something here that is probably bullshite and will make Fist chuckle. The grass seems extra thick, long and lush at Aintree, so I think that this helps keep the moisture in the soil, rather than it being burned off by the sun.
In addition, in the analysis for Amberleigh House’s victory it said that there was a concern that it was going to be too quick for the 12yo, but in fact it was like a carpet.
I’ve never got around to completing my trainer check, but looking at my tallysheet Willie Mullins has had 12 runners in the National since either 2003 or 2002. That is why I want to keep on the right side of him.
Some of you may note that although I am assuming slightly slow ground, that I have had a few bob on the quickground Parsons Legacy as well. My reason is that the horse didn’t run between 12th Dec and the GN, so I’m assuming the horse had some kind of interrupted preparation for the GN, although there wasn’t any suitable ground for the horse anytime in that period.
Moe helped point out to me that a winner needs to have had a recent run, and Parsons Legacy didn’t have that last year. I won’t be making the horse a winner, just a saver.
August 23, 2009 at 22:58 #245437In one of my many notebooks [new years resolution; organise notes better..try not to use more than one book at a time…] it says ‘Ballytrim will stay..jumping..question mark’. As my notes make no sense whatsoever 5 minutes after I’ve written them, haven’t got a clue what I meant. Willy Mullins, however, don’t need a notebook to remind myself just what a good trainer he is.Trouble is, the whole world and his brother knows that as well!
August 24, 2009 at 21:35 #245577£1.99 @ 110 Garde Champetre (top-up)
£4 @ 240 Trabolgan
£2@ 118 Ballytrim (top-up)
£1.99 @ 120 Preists leap (saver top-up)
[/color:2dse6zio]Difficult to say what is a good price for Trabolgan. We may never see him in the track again. He at least turned up twice last season. Will be a 12yo next year. On the other hand he is well-handicapped, if returning to some kind of form. Also, he will be aimed at the GN, rather than the Gold Cup.
I also need to return to my original "shortlist" of 27 or so. I’m not sure what proportion I have bet on horses which don’t meet my damsire FSI criterion.
August 25, 2009 at 02:15 #245627Think I’m going to have a small ew on Russian Trigger @40-50/1. The only one of interest at the moment that has a Ladbrokes price.
August 26, 2009 at 21:57 #245956Geddit? Bally who.
I check the GN market on betfair 2 or 3 times a day. I’ve been expecting Miko de Beauchene to be added, because I requested it last Friday. Actually,
Ballyholland
has turned up. Winner of the Galway Plate. Pity I didn’t have a bet on the Galway Plate, because if I’d looked at quotes I’d’ve seen this:
21Jun09 Down Royal (20GF ,RPR140)
The Galway Plate has always been the plan, the owner would love to have a runner in Galway. He`s a 2m 4f horse but we hope he can stay the trip – Colin McBratney, trainerAnyway, the plan for the horse now is to return to Navan in late September for the race the horse won last year, the Le Grande Cup. After that, the plan is the
Becher Chase
. The horse is now rated 42 lbs higher by the Irish H’capper than last year.
I’m not betting on him for the GN, but I thought it would be interesting mentioning him, as we’ve been discussing ballys.
