    Drumconvis
    2001
Taipan (Ire) – Sailors Run (Ire) (Roselier (FR) (16.0))
    Trainer AJ Martin (Ire)
    Irish Official Rating – 139

Hasn’t won a 3m+ chase yet, but was 2nd in NH Chase at Cheltenham.

I stampeded myself into this bet, because I thought if he ran well in the Irish GN, he would never be such a big price again.

    £8 @ 95
    £16 @ 90
    [/color:uzaoto6f]
    http://www.pedigreequery.com/drumconvis

Just for info, horses currently 100+ are
    Companero 100
    Siegemaster 110
    Offshore Account 110
    Preists Leap 100
    Finger Onthe Pulse 100

I am interested in both Preists Leap and Finger Onthe Pulse, but think their prices could get bigger sometime over the next 51 weeks. Also, I’m worried that Preists Leap might have injured himself at the 3rd last, and I’d would want to see him run again, or at least be declared for a race, first.

    Garde Champetre

    1999
Garde Royale (11.2f) – Clementine Fleurie (FR) (Lionel (FR))
    Trainer Enda Bolger (Ire)

Connections had a looksee this year – was entered for the GN, and allocated a rating of 142 I think.

I also can’t forget that when I had my first look in December, Garde Champetre was one of the two horses I narrowed it down to, the other being Mon Mome.

Same reason for backing this as for Drumconvis I suppose, because he is entered in the Irish GN. At least I can forget about this horse now, and not keep on looking at him. I’m trying to keep my bets this time down to 40, so I suppose getting 80 is okay. I can always top-up if the horse gets bigger.

Some might think he is a bit old at 11, but I’m not concerned about that.

Graysonscolumn says the horse is quirky, which I interpret as meaning he is ideal for the GN.

Drumconvis is apparently still being quoted by Stan James, one month after his public death.

Well here is the news about Garde Champtetre.

    26Apr08 Punchestown (24Gd ,RPR133)
It was a wee bit too firm for him on Thursday, but there was a bit more ease in the ground today after the rain overnight. Carrying top-weight didn’t affect him as much as I thought.

He’ll have the same campaign next year.

    – Enda Bolger, trainer

    30Apr09 Punchestown (34Sft/Hy,RPR147)
I thought three out we were in a bit of trouble and under the cosh but his class came into play and got him there. He`s a great jumper. I knew the ground wouldn`t totally suit him and Nina said she probably got there a bit soon.

He`s won here before but not a La Touche and that`s the one we were after.

This is a great lift for everyone and JP`s been my biggest supporter. I spoke to him after they passed the line and the party has already begun in Martinstown! Enda Bolger, trainer

Okay, now that he has finally won the La Touche Cup, will they go for another one, or now set their aim at the GN?

I’ve just completed my primary run through of the horses in my spreadsheet. There were 373 of them, including quite a bit of dross because I had the entries for the Welsh National and I think Scottish National and Whitbread, rather than just the runners.

At the moment, I am concentrating on horses that it is sensible to have an ante-post bet on, rather than picking the winner, if you see what I mean. I won’t start betting heavily on this race until the autumn, when the horses start making their seasonal debuts. I accidentally hit upon a trend for the GN when I did my study in early December 2008. Because I was looking for a "sensible" ante-post bet, I restricted myself only to horses that had already run that season. Unbeknownest to me, until a few days later when I started studying past GN winners, 12 of the past 13 winners not only had run by early December, but had run twice! The exception was Silver Birch, who had only run in one P-t-P. (Before those 13, both Royal Athlete and Miinnehoma made their seasonal debuts later in the season.)

Anyway, I’m restrcting my self to horses that will be aged 9-12 next year.
Have won a chase of 25+f.
Have a Damsire Flat Stamina Index of at least 12.8f
Have a combined Sire and Damsire FSI of 25f+ or so. (Didn’t note down the actual cutoff I used)
As I didn’t think it sensible to exclude Mon Mome, Comply or Die or My Will, the upper rating band is 162.
Because I didn’t think it sensible to exclude Merigo or Hennessy, the lower rating band is 132 I think.
    I used a 10lb lower band (122) for Ireland.

I then excluded both of Alan King’s horses (Pangbourne and Nenuphar Collonges), because he doesn’t seem too keen on the GN.

Rather disappointingly, the shortlist has as many as 27 horses on it. Here they are, arranged by age.

    12 yos

    A New Story
    Celestial Gold
    Forget The Past
    Homer Wells
    Kelami
    Ollie Magern

    11 yos

    Bothar Na
    Comply Or Die
    Cornish Sett
    Garde Champetre
    Golden Flight
    High Chimes
    Himalayan Trail
    L’Ami
    Newbay Prop
    Over The Creek

    10yos

    Character Building
    Mon Mome
    Morgan Be
    My Will
    Patsy Hall
    State of Play

    9 yos

    An Accordion
    Hennessy
    Merigo
    Niche Market
    Star De Mohaison

Of course, after Cerium very nearly finished 4th as an 8yo, and Big Fella Thanks came 6th as a 7yo I will also be looking to have a bet on them, when I like the price.

I’ve had a look through a few quotes.

    One I’m keen on is

    Bothar Na

    20 Sep 06
We brought him to Aintree this year to see how he would take to the fences. He finished fourth in the Fox Hunters and jumped super. He was unlucky and had to swerve to avoid a faller at the 14th fence. He looked a natural for Aintree that day and he has the size and scope to be a National horse, so that is the long term plan – [trainer]

PU GN 07, as an 8yo
3rd Topham 08, as didn’t get into GN (rating 131)
2009, was off course Nov 08 – May 09, so had some kind of setback. The good news is that he came 3rd at Punchestown a couple of weeks ago, so all is well again.

I’m also keen on High Chimes, Merigo and Niche Market. I emailed Betfair this evening to add 7 horses to the GN market, and after I came back from supper a couple of hours later, they had already been added. Nice service, must be quiet in the office this evening.

I’m beginning to think that Character Building is never going to get to Aintree. Bothar Na is my current Point Barrow, having backed him ante post a couple of times; I can clearly remember that interview with the trainer on the telly. Big Fella Thanks is interesting; they wouldn’t have given the horse that name without thinking that he was very very special; am going to re watch this years race and try to pick him out.

Is Big Fella Thanks another horse that Findlay named after a famous greyhound?

I wanted to mention this somewhere, but thought it was a bit too early to start a Hennessy strand. State Of Play came 4th in the GN off 150. On the RP website, it now says that his OR is 145, the same as when he won the Hennessy. Is this some kind of clerical error, and will the Official Handicapper change it in the approx 6 months before the weights are out?
I’ve just checked on the BHA site, and it says 145 there too.

Yes; he’s still got the dog…won a big coursing

competition after two of Findlays friends were killed in a car crash. Forget the Past is an interesting horse with a lot of class; National winners seem to need that now. Maybe Pierrot Lunaire will win it now that he’s left P Nicholls!!

Well, if I’m going to bet this horse to win 5 figures, I might as well make a start.

    Merigo

    £13 @ 101.53[/color:2zyk4qfq]

    http://www.pedigreequery.com/merigo

I put about £50 on him for the 2009 GN, but he wasn’t entered. When the entries finally came out, I had a total of £170 on horses not entered. I put all my horses at that stage into a spreadsheet, together with their current Betfair backing price, and my book was still worth 101% of what I had invested so far, so I had basically stood still.

I don’t know whether the owners are keen on running in the GN.

One good thing is that they are keeping the horse to going on the soft side of Good, and that is what it will be for the GN, because of the watering policy.

The trainer is Timmy Murphy’s father-in-law, I believe. So he will have to choose between this one, Comply or Die, or any other Pipe horse.

[edit: just come across this –
Parker said: "The owner is a patriotic Scotsman so he will probably go up to Ayr for the Scottish Grand National but there is no reason why he shouldn’t be an Aintree horse next year."
:D That means that I can go steaming in whenever I want, and not worry about him not turning up.]

I believe there had been a price of about 80-85 for

    Hennessy

, but it has gone now. Hopefully, he”ll go back out sometime over the next few months. I’d like to see him entered in the autumn first, just to make sure he has recovered from the Bet365.

There is no problem with Merigo’s health, as far as I am aware, because he was ready to run at Ayr, and only the fast ground prevented him.

On the subject of the Hennessy itself, I can’t believe that

    State Of Play

now has an OR as low as 145, same as when he won the Hennessy 3 years ago. Will it stay like this for the next 5-6 months, or will the Official Handicapper admit he has made a small glitch? (I might have already made a posting about this somewhere, so apologies for the repetition, if any.)

The one which would have had people gagging on their conflakes Cormack would have been this year’s, where I backed 70+ horses.

    That was my first attempt.

As I’ve written elsewhere, I’m trying to keep it down to 40 horses this time.

I’ve just added the 19 horses rated 140+ over 3m+ in the 2008-09 Anglo-Irish Classification that I didn’t have, to my spreadsheet.

None of them meet all the criteria that I am using at the moment.

Time to tuck this thread away until October, unless some juicy prices become available.

My PC is a bit sluggish, and liable to freezing this afternoon, so I’ll save this post after every two or three items.

    2009 Mon Mome

    17Feb07 Haydock (29Hy ,RPR143)
I just felt he was a bit too young for the National this season, he is in the William Hill Chase and that is a possibility. – Vida Bingham, owner

    13Jan07 Warwick (29Hy ,RPR150)
Fingers crossed he will go for the National, but we have no immediate plans for him. He has had two races within 17 days and I would have to be very, very pleased with him to run him again in the near future. He`s a little star, not a big horse, and hopefully his turn will come – [trainer]

National mentioned twice, including by the owner.[/color:1mvif56i]

    2008 Comply Or Die

    12Nov04 Cheltenham (25Gd ,RPR154)
The Royal & SunAlliance Chase remains his target as he jumps and stays well [/color:1mvif56i]but he’s now had two or three quick races and he may well have a little rest for the time being – Martin Pipe

    2007 Silver Birch

    28Dec04 Chepstow (30Hy ,RPR148)
We’ll have to train him seriously for the Grand National now. I’ve no idea where he’ll run next but he’ll have one more outing and then go to Aintree. He idled a bit in front, and had a bit in hand. Silver Birch is improving, loved the ground, and anything else this term would be a bonus, as he has already won the Becher Chase and now this – Paul Nicholls, trainer; He travelled super and was a pleasure to ride. He has plenty of guts, pinged the last, which we needed to, and stuck his head out. If there’s a decent pace and good ground in the Grand National, he’ll have a chance – Ruby Walsh, jockey

    21Nov04 Aintree (27Sft ,RPR137)
He’s only seven, so this year’s Grand National may come a bit soon for him and, off his current rating, he’s not certain to even get in, but he’ll go up now, and we know he stays well, so who knows, we might just train him for it – Paul Nicholls; All I had to do was steer him. He jumped like an absolute stag all the way round. If every horse jumped like him, you’d never have a worry – Ruby Walsh

    2006 Numbersixvalverde

    20Jan05 Gowran Park (24Sft/Hy,RPR134)
He’s a horse who needs plenty of individual attention. He needs time on his own and works best alone or following other horses. Let’s say he isn’t into servile work. Numbersixvalverde has really taken to fences. Over hurdles things are inclined to happen a bit fast for him. He jumps fences really well and he stays.[/color:1mvif56i] We’ll probably enter him for the Irish Grand National, although hedoes need ease in the ground, and he could go to Navan for the novice handicap chase final on March 5. – Martin Brassil, trainer; They quickened up out of the back straight, but I knew my horse would stay and he kept going all the way to the line. – Niall Madden, jockey

    2005 Hedgehunter

    19Feb05 Fairyhouse (25Sft ,RPR150)
I was a bit worried about going over fences for the first time in a while as he hadn’t schooled over fences but I’m a great believer in they either do or they don’t. I don’t know if he’ll have another run before Aintree, a race we’ve trained him for all season. He has a lot of weight for an ordinary horse and they may well go up. It’s a very long time since a horse with over 11stone won the National so that would worry me. I didn’t back him today but if we get him there in one piece I’ll have my few quid on in the National – trainer, Willie Mullins

    30Jan05 Punchestown (24Sft/Hy,RPR102)
He just isn’t the same horse over hurdles that he is over fences and I’d imagine he will have his prep for the Grand National in the Haydock race. – Willie Mullins, trainer

    22Jan04 Gowran Park (24Sft ,RPR156)
He is going to get a penalty for today’s win and that should get him well into the handicap, with a reasonable weight, for the Grand National. When he ran in the Welsh National Ruby (Walsh, who was suspended on Thursday) wanted to hold him up and I wanted him up on the pace. We went with what Ruby wanted to do and things didn’t work out. Today we weren’t planning to actually make the running, but David (Casey) found himself upsides Be My Belle early on and decided to let Hedgehunter bowl. Being ridden that way certainly seems to suit the horse. Davy (Russell) did extremely well to stay with Rule Supreme when he made that mistake in the back straight. The horse has some engine but his jumping is still a problem. He probably needs better ground and while the Royal & SunAlliance Chase has been the plan we will have to try and get his jumping sorted out. – Willie Mullins

    30Apr03 Punchestown (25Gd ,RPR135)
We might have had the first three of them if Killultagh Thunder (sixth) had not dwelt at the start and made a bad mistake. Next season the three of them will be aimed at races Paddy Power Handicap Chase, the Grand National and the Irish National. If Rule Supreme keeps improving he could go a step higher than handicaps but the Grand National will be Hedgehunter’s target. The ground was a bit lively for him here but he stays all day. – Willie Mullins.

    02Feb03 Punchestown (28Sft/Hy,RPR132)
The plan was for Jamie Codd to ride him today with a view to riding him in the National Hunt Chase Cheltenham. But the weights didn’t go up and that idea had to be scrapped. Hedgehunter is in the Martell’s Grand National, but he probably has little chance of making the cut. So after the National Hunt Chase we’ll probably look at the Irish National and other long-distance handicaps – Willie Mullins, Trainer

    2004 Amberleigh House

    23Nov03 Aintree (27Gd ,RPR154)
He is a super horse and I thought he hadit until three strides from the line. He gave the winner 7lb. I am absolutely tickled pink with the horse. All he has got to do is find 6lb or 7lb improvement before April which I am sure he can do. – Ginger McCain

    2003 Monty’s Pass

    25Sep02 Listowel (24Fm ,RPR148)
He was second in the Topham at Aintree this year and he will go back there for the Becher Chase in November. You won’t be seeing a lot of him between the two Aintree meetings.

[/color:1mvif56i] Monty’s deserved to win a big one. He’s been placed in a Galway Plate, a Topham and this race in the past – James Mangan, Trainer

    2002 Bindaree

    04Nov00 Chepstow (20Sft ,RPR133)
Ask The Natives was going well but Bindaree finds plenty when challenged and he’s a brilliant jumper. He won’t run short of three miles from now on [/color:1mvif56i]and the two races we are looking at are the Elizabeth Hitchins Memorial Chase at Newbury and then the Feltham at Kempton. – Nigel Twiston-Davies

    21Sep00 Perth (21Hy ,RPR136)
He was fourth in last season’s Royal and Sun Alliance Chase [Hurdle?], so we’d be hoping he’d be good enough for this season’s Sun Alliance Chase. He’s had a nice canter around today and he’s jumped beautifully[/color:1mvif56i]. – Nigel Twiston-Davies

    2001 Red Marauder

    05Feb00 Wetherby (21Sft ,RPR145)
He’ll come on a lot for that. He was a bit ring rusty and his jumping could have been better, although I was looking after him. If he comes out of this race all right, he’ll go for the Racing Post Chase and then the National[/color:1mvif56i]. – R Guest

    2000 Papillon

    20 March 2000
He’s in the Martell Grand National, but I’ll have to speak to his owner before we decide whether he runs at Aintree or in the Irish National. – Ted Walsh

Not much of an advance indication, as it was only 20 days before the race.[/color:1mvif56i]

    1999 Bobbyjo

There doesn’t seem to be any quotes on the Racing Post database prior to 2000, so that is as far back as we can go.
    [/color:1mvif56i]

    Conclusion
Looking for a horse that is being aimed at the GN, long-term, and jumps well and stays well. Yeah, well we all know that anyway, but its nice to hear it from the horse’s mouth, as it were.

Don’t know Moe. I’m chronicling my misdemeanours, rather than showing off what a know-it-all I am about the GN.

I suppose there might be a view that if the connections were serious about the GN, they would have had a go this year, so there is a fair chance that he won’t be entered again.

    Henderson issues Golden Flight warning

    By Rodney Masters1.56PM 19 APR 2009

Nicky Henderson’s Golden Flight,a first fence faller in the John Smith’s Grand National, will run in Saturday’s Bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Sandown only if there is suitable cut in the ground.

The trainer told racingpost.com on Sunday: "We would like to run at Sandown, but the ground must be right. We took him out of the Scottish National because conditions were too quick."

Golden on target for National after heart scare

    By Rodney Masters4.33PM 9 DEC 2008

NICKY HENDERSON’s Grand National hope Golden Flight has undergone successful treatment for a fibrillating heart and he remains on target for a challenge at Aintree next spring.

When trained by Guillaume Macaire, Golden Flight had a big reputation in France where he has won 11 races and more than £500,000. He has not run since May of last year when he finished third to Mid Dancer in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris.

Owner John Cotton sent the 145 rated nine-year-old to Henderson in the summer with the National as a specific target.

The trainer said on Tuesday: "Golden Flight had a problem similar to Denman’s. His treatment included injections of quinine, and fortunately he seems fine again now. The plan is to give him on race prior to the National, and that may well be over hurdles."

    01May09 Punchestown (30Hy ,RPR139)
That was his Grand National, and that`s where we`re going with either the Irish National or Aintree National down the road. Ruby said he was the first horse beaten but today`s plan was to wait and wait and while he probably didn`t like the heavy ground he picked up very well when Ruby kept asking him – Willie Mullins, trainer

    25Feb09 Downpatrick (28Y ,RPR134)
We took him out of the John Smith’s Grand National, and the Irish National and/or the long distance handicap at the Punchestown festival are races we will look at for him. He jumped a lot better today than last time and I’d say the better ground had a lot to do with that – Willie Mullins, trainer

I’m a bit dubious about backing him, if he might run in the Irish National instead of the GN. Would this mainly be depending upon whether he’d get into the GN?

I really fancied Ballytrim after that race, but I’m not sure that he’ll even get into the National next year. I think he was on KC’s list of horses that would stay the distance for this years race

. I think Russian Triggers jumping is improving. There’s a Victor Dartnell thread on another forum that is pretty informative about his horses, so should know by September what the aims are for the horse.

Yes, even though Ballyfitz was technically a novice, I was thinking he might run in the National 09, mainly because of being trained by NATD.

I’m not too convinced that one of my shortlist of 27 will win, so I’ll be doing a little bit of expansion into 8yos, and horses that don’t meet the Flat Stamina Indices that I use.

People were a little bit unkind about Russian Trigger’s jumping – he was only having his 3rd ever start when winning the Kent National.

I don`t think you`d ever get to the bottom of this fellow, he`d stay ten and a half miles,. Ever since his first run for me over hurdles at Taunton he`s looked the part, and beside from one mistake today his jumping was superb. We had the virus when he went over fences, but now he`s won his second National as a mere novice. I hope he`ll be an Aintree horse one day.[/color:161z0w0l] I shall have to discuss it with his owners but there`s a chance he could go to Ayr if he`s okay. – Victor Dartnall

    Trainer James Joseph Mangan
    Owner Mrs Anne Gittins

    £13.99 @ 120[/color:161z0w0l]

120 seems a reasonable price for a horse that will almost certainly be in the line-up, and was less than 40 for most of last season.

This is from a story before the Irish National:-
One horse who is certain to start is Himalayan Trail, a first-fence faller in the Grand National on Saturday.
His trainer Jimmy Mangan said on Thursday: "Himalayan Trail galloped on riderless at Aintree and jumped all the fences bar the last two. He was fine afterwards and the plan is to run him on Monday. I’m not sure yet who will ride him."
We can look out for him, next time we see a replay.

Mangan out for second National with Himalayan

    By Racingpost.com staff4.06PM 26 MAR 2009
SIX years after teaming up with Barry Geraghty to win the John Smith’s Grand National with Monty’s Pass, trainer Jimmy Mangan is hoping to book the jockey for new recruit Himalayan Trail in the 2009 renewal.
The ten-year-old was purchased by Mark Gittins inMay 2008, after taking that year’s Midlands National at Uttoxeter, for £130,000 with a tilt at the 4m4f test in mind.
Geraghty was on board when the lightly-raced chaser finished fifth attempting the National fences for the first time in the Becher Chase in November and Mangan would "love" the partnership to be renewed on his return to Aintree on April 4.
"I am waiting to see whether Barry will be required to ride for Nicky Henderson but he’s certainly been a lucky jockey for me in the past, with Monty’s Pass, and I would love to have him on board Himalayan Trail," said Mangan.
"His run in the Becher was on desperate ground and he still produced a good run. Barry Geraghty was delighted with him afterwards and he was absolutely thrilled with the way he jumped the fences.
"We gave him a spin over hurdles at Naas in February, when he was 11th, but that was on bottomless ground and he’s a different horse in the spring.
"He’s really turned inside out since the weather has got warmer and better ground is the key for him, so we will be hoping that the rain stays away."

I’ve asked Betfair to add Coe, Flintoff, Jass, Ice Tea, Russian Around, Silverburn, Trabolgan and Will Be Done to the market. (I suppose a couple of them are diversions from the actual ones I want to back.)

Just a few top-ups – I’m feeling a bit guilty about continually adding posts to this thread, when it ought to be quiet for a couple of months. This ought to be it for the month.

    Bothar Na £5 @ 120 [/color:3sk44wgc] (top up)
Merigo £15 @ 102.65 [/color:3sk44wgc] (top up) (thought he wouldn’t trade above 100 during the season.)
    Himalayan Trail £6 @ 122.37[/color:3sk44wgc] (top up)

    Garde Champetre £17 @ 80

People may have been wondering how come I’ve been posting in the mornings the last couple of days. Well, the central database in Canada has been down since Sunday, and consequently none of my machines can work, so for the past three days I have worked 3 hours, 3 minutes, and one hour, none of which was proper work – just pfaffing around.

Here’s a little bit of tidying up research I’ve done this morning.

    Days since Last Run

This was prompted by a comment by Moe regarding State Of Play. Maybe he should have run in the Aon Chase, or something.
The 16 days was Rough Quest in the Gold Cup. In future, I think there will always be 22 days between the Gold Cup and GN, Easter permitting.
The two 20s were both hurdle races in Ireland.

Irish & Welsh Nationals, Gold Cup and Aintree fences seem to make the most sense to take most notice of. I think at least three have come down the field in the 3m4f Blue Square at Haydock.

Royal Athlete fell in the Sun Alliance when favourite, the Hennessy and the Irish National, so he sort of hid how good he was, apart from coming 3rd in the Gold Cup.
