February 2, 2009 at 22:23 #207765I’m ashamed of you KC, it is written on your own long-term thoughts thread . . .
February 3, 2009 at 03:16 #207841I would think War Of Attrition would have a wonderful chance, with or without Denman, as long as he doesn’t run in the Gold Cup.
Not sure if a break of 3 and a half weeks is sufficient for him.February 3, 2009 at 03:18 #207843Which one???? He won’t btw

Southern Vic
February 3, 2009 at 03:27 #207850Someone said last year that they thought Comply or Dies headgear wasn’t quite normal blinkers; more of a visor perhaps? Also more horses are wearing cheekpieces these days and I’m not sure how long they’ve been around for..certainly placed horses have worn them All this messing about with the top weight and compressing the handicap is going to have an effect, but every pound over 11 stone starts to tell after 4 miles.
That was me Moehat- I had dismissed him for the blinkers reason then seeing him afterwards they were the smallest pair of blinkers I’ve ever seen- his peripheral vision would hardly have been restricted at all. I’d still oppose a horse in traditional full blinkers.
February 3, 2009 at 21:36 #207948Ok chaps, i know some of you are tremendous with statistics. I cannot find anywhere with this information to hand, perhaps one of you is more resourceful. I am trying to find out what percentge of horses that FALL in the national then go on to subsequantly place in the event.
Any help would be great thanks.
February 3, 2009 at 22:59 #207977I’ve actually got that info for the past 15 Nationals to hand, but I’m just about to go on an alcoholic bender.
I’ll provide the information tomorrow.
February 4, 2009 at 00:30 #207996given the time between Cheltenham and Aintree this year do we have any ideas about which horses are going to miss Cheltenham altogether?

I’m not sure of it as a percentage but I know if you have two horses (one placed in a National and one fell in the National) statistically you want to be with the faller.
February 4, 2009 at 02:59 #208034The fence that the horse falls at, ought to be a signature fence, such as Becher’s ( 6th or preferably 22nd) , the Chair, Canal Turn, Valentines etc., or late on.
Although I think there’s some exception who did something ridiculous, such as falling the fence before Becher’s, second circuit.
I can drag up all the relevant info, and post it, within an hour of British Rail allowing me home.
February 4, 2009 at 03:23 #208040Hedgehunter is obviously the first one to spring to mind….West Tip, Little Polveir
February 4, 2009 at 03:45 #208048Okay, this only goes back to 2000 – I’ll find the other page tomorrow.
2007 winner Silver Birch Fell GN 06
2007 2nd Mckelvey UR GN 062006 3rd Clan Royal CO GN 05
2005 1st Hedgehunter Fell GN 04
2001 1st Red Maruader Fell GN 00
2000 4th Brave Highlander 6th GN 99, but UR GN 98
February 4, 2009 at 03:59 #208049YES! I got it right
1997 3rd Camelot Knight Fell GN 95 21st fence
1996 3rd Superior Finish UR GN 95
That is the complete list of placed horses going back to 1994 who fell in a previous Grand National.
Other placed horses have fell at the Aintree fences in other races,
2007 4th Philson Run Fell Becher Chase 05
1996 1st Rough Quest Fell Topham 94
Actually, that’s it.
Amberleigh House might have fallen, but I didn’t write out the horse’s record because it was so long and tedious. You can do it yourself.
February 4, 2009 at 04:01 #208050Also Royal Athlete (fell at the 9th in the void National). Rough Quest fell on his only previous attempt over the National fences, in the Topham.
February 4, 2009 at 04:05 #208052If you REALLY want, Milbear, I can answer your actual query about what percentage of fallers etc, but you’ll have to wait until after I’ve counted my winnings from Newbury on Saturday.
February 4, 2009 at 04:07 #208055I’m ignoring Void National.
Didn’t happen.
