Gosden none too pleased, no pace and we were too far back then quickly walked off.

The more I know the less I understand.

Agreed Gosden looked like he was sucking a lemon previewing the race when interviewed.
Class race though – looking forward to Royal Ascot. :good:

    “Weaver bottled it.”

No change there, then. Remember, this is the same racing team that wanted us to believe Murphy did nothing wrong on Old Harrovian.

They won’t criticise top jockeys. Only apprentices and foreign jockeys who they hardly ever encounter. They are not going to criticise the jockey of the highest profile yard in the country and risk being frozen out.

It is one cosy club and we are not in it.

“I said beforehand Nathan, there wasn’t a true front runner and they didn’t go that fast early. Shoemark was on a horse that has been free previously and had to get the horse settled – so can understand him being further back and challenging later than Buick. But the tailwind helped those in front stay there. It was the reason why I backed Ruling Court as a main bet and Field Of Gold as a saver. Maybe Shoemark would have done better challenging a bit earlier, but I can understand the ride.”

Sorry Ginge.. you post got a Little Mary there

Yes, the jockey was riding his race but has to think what’s going on and adapt accordingly, not sit pretty when the rest of the field start to kick. This is a group 1 not a gallop.

Yes, just didn’t handle the rising ground as fluidly as last time, certainly not a glaringly poor ride. Gosden understandably a bit sore.

I backed Field Of Gold and didn’t feel i was robbed. When Ruling Court made his move Field Of Gold got tapped for toe off a slow pace in comparison and got going too late. Shoemark could’ve rid him handier but that’s hindsight talk because noone knew the pace was gonna be that slow. Off a typically well run Guineas it may have been a different result.

Cheers, Darren. On another day, it could easily have gone your way. Happy that you collected e/w, though. 👍

Ginge – I’ll be even more glad all over if Palace beat Man City in the cup final!

and I see Struth who always gets front ridden has had a change of tactics today
Not the best idea with the tail wind

The side on camera shot was rather telling – Buick was already asking his horse to pick up well before they went into the dip (as you should to gain momentum) while Shoemark was still sitting and waiting, Buick nicked the best part of 2L there and it was a race winning move as they were already in the dip by the time Shoemark finally got serious on Field of Gold and it wasn’t until he met the rising ground that he really hit full stride but it was far too late by then.

Hindsight is a great thing but Shoemark should have just pulled him outside of Ruling Court and got him rolling cominng to the 2F pole because with that stride he would have been in full flight by the dip and would have gained extra momentum coming out of it.

My point is that Shoemark had to get cover for the majority of the race, otherwise Field Of Gold would have been far too free. Whereas Ruling Court is now a more straightforward racehorse. Settled better at Meydan than he did at York… And once settled today although “held up” Buick was able to race with a clear view ahead (not at the front but still on the arrowhead). Whereas that position would not be possible with a horse like Field Of Gold. Because Field Of Gold pulls when seeing early (and mid) daylight, he had to run the majority of the race with a rival directly in front of him. I’d be pretty sure those would have been the orders. Yes, I agree he should’ve challenged a bit earlier, but it’s not imo as bad as it at first might appear once assessing the horses temperaments and how the race was run.

Nobody is complaining about getting the horse some cover initially Ginger.

The issue is that the guy was still taking a pull while Buick was beginning to build momentum on his horse with a tailwind behind them.

An appalling ride given the stakes.

Field Of Gold needs prolonged cover, GM. Not just “initially”. Shoemark was always going to be last to challenge given the horse he was riding. Ruling Court is an 8f to 10f (possibly 12f) horse and Field Of Gold is a 100% miler. I wouldn’t say he was “taking a pull”, but of course Buick would go for home in earnest before Shoemark.

It was a mistake but one I can understand Shoemark making given ALL of the circumstances.
