Well the late gamble does the business. 33/1 not so long ago, Winter was a good winner today. Probably plenty will be made about the favourite being unlucky however.
Unbelievably, Winter was a losing nap for me on her second start in a maiden last season. I had her at early odds and she was then into odds on before slightly weakening to evens and running a poor third on the day. She ran to 73 on rating that day, now she’s a Classic winner.
Aidan has clearly worked the magic with this filly since she left David Wachman, who I have to say I never really rated very highly.
You just can’t stop this Ballydoyle juggernaut in these Guineas races. They must be doing something that other trainers just can’t match.
My heart sank when I saw Fair Eva, she was tiny and the growth spurt Charlton mentioned must have been about a millimetre at most. She ran OK, no more than that, it didn’t look like she stayed the mile and that was disappointing.
Daban ran well from her low draw and Talaayeb was respectable on her seasonal debut.
I can’t tip rubbish and hope that others are having more success.
Just to rub it in, Custom Cut, who I backed last time, won today.
Predictably, Rhododendron was cut for the Oaks to as low as 7/4. No thank you Sporting Bet, I haven’t gone brain dead quite yet. Even Stan James are bigger than that at a positively generous 2/1

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 7, 2017 at 16:11 #1299896Best horse won for me without a doubt. Very easy to back AOB horses but very difficult to pick the right one.
Anything is possible

I agree with that. If you watch Rhodendron, she is really only chopped off very briefly. She is staying on with her tongue hanging out and looks a shade unbalanced. Fair Eva, Talaayeb and to a lesser extent Daban all look to be weakening and Rhododendron stays past all of them into second. I think Winter simply picked up best and I feel she will confirm form with Rhododendron if they meet again.
The money didn’t come for Winter without reason and it may be that Aidan will step Rhododendren up now, to avoid today’s winner if nothing else.
Ryan seemed to be able to pull the runner-up up fairly readily today and I won’t be rushing to back her for the Oaks at skinny odds.

May 7, 2017 at 16:58 #1299907Maybe follow the Aiden O Brien money in future. Obviously your average punter isn’t privy to the times they are setting I left that Winter alone because I felt she faded last time but it was the draw that killed her. Monstrously impressive today you’d have to say.
She was out of Laddiespokertoo who won the wokingham, so clearly that breed like’s big fields, I guess?
May 7, 2017 at 16:59 #1299908The other thing I think is that Coolmore have such a massive advantage in terms of their breeding operation and they are so many light years ahead of anyone else, that even their third string are probably better than anyone else’s first string.
Or at least it seems that way.
May 7, 2017 at 17:13 #1299911anyone else find their domianance rather boring?
I find it an amazing success story to be honest. It’s been great to see them put a team together like they have. Obviously they hit the jackpot when Gallileo came along, but fair play to them with the amount they must of put in.
From Magnier to the stable lad’s it seems everyone plays a part in the operation and the trainer always praises the team, which is not what you would imagine the Arabs saying on camera.
It will be great to see how it pans out if others try to compete but i think Coolmore have a five year start on them as it stands.
People always go on about Coolmore would not be were they are were it not for Galileo. But, that they would still have had a good shot of complete respectability with the other Stallions that they had prior to Galileo, with Danehill , Danehill Dancer and Monjteu The loss of Montjeu would have been a bit of a disaster though (we will see how Camelot does at stud) They were still able to compete with Godolpin in the early days

Someone pointed out that their 2nd and 3rd string are probably just as strong. Well, judging by their ability to win the guineas and Derby trials in Ireland and UK, and judging by the jockey arrangements and their ability to win classics ………..yep , rather emphatic.
Funny how Aidan looks annoyed when his 2nd or 3rd string win the big ones
May 7, 2017 at 17:30 #1299914I don’t know whether Rhododendron would have won or not but equally I find it very hard to believe anyone could be certain that the winner would have held on had the second been ridden just off the pace.
Rhododendron ended up 5 lengths behind going sidewards. She reduced that to not much more than 2 lengths. It would have taken a wonder horse to reel in the winner.
I think the results pretty sum up Coolmore’s attitude regarding colts and fillies. They would have been mortified if Lancaster Bomber had beaten Churchill but I doubt they were too bothered that Winter beat Rhododendron. In fact maybe those were the two results they wanted.

The scary thing is what Stallions are the like of Found, Minding, Gleneagles, Highland Reel, Alice Springs, Seventh Heaven, The Gurkha and Churchill going to produce in the future for them ?
May 7, 2017 at 17:56 #1299918I don’t think the favourite was “unlucky” as I think the winner would have won on anyway but clearly she didn’t get a good run through the race.
If they met again in the Irish 1000 guineas I’d be fairly confident Winter would just beat her again.

That just about sums it up Stilvi…Diplomatically put too..I personally think todays result stinks.’Hydrangea’ beats ‘winter’ in their last race with the 3rd horse franking the form,’Hydrangea’ has solid form with ‘Rhododenrun’ and gets backed today as if she was a player..Oh no, she was pacemaker clear as day, rousted from the off to get to the front and rousted to set a good gallop, meanwhile ‘Winters’ cantering on her outside and takes it up easily looking all over the winner.Meanwhile Ryan is doing his best to get ‘Rhododendrun’ beat and does it beautifully,”he’ll be delighted with that performance” says Aiden after the race….Yeh and so will all the Ante-Post punters who took the 20/1 last year.’winter’ gets hammered in the week from 33/1 to 8/1 whilst ‘Rhododendrun’ is a measly 2/1.Money talks when its Coolmores and todays result worked out a treat for them.
May 7, 2017 at 18:20 #1299925Am gutted that she not win but overall had decent week Chester is next and after that looking for more classic winners over the next few months for next year.
May 7, 2017 at 18:24 #1299927I’m not normally keen on conspiracy theories but it seems “the king” has hit the nail on the head there.
Still we had plenty of warning as Winter was punted midweek, we could have taken the hint…
May 7, 2017 at 18:28 #1299928I dont know if anyone else picked up on it on TV, but when AOB was asked after the race if “that was the result he expected ” he answered yes.
May 7, 2017 at 18:31 #1299929Surely you guys don’t actually believe that nonsense? What would Coolmore serve to gain from Winter beating Rhododendron? Winter was tipped up by Kevin Blake on the Final Furlong Podcast and then a few other tipsters cottoned on that she was too big a price – that’s why she shortened.

Yep, we got close Daz with that one. My New Year resolution was laying off when i got in a good position on the AP front. Backing at 20/1 and getting out at 3/1 for example takes a bit of the pain away.

Lol do you seriously believe that she’s been cut massively because of some bloke on a podcast- it’s decent money from Ballydoyle and others in the know that has seen her hammered in price.
