one other thing – please stop referring to TB and BB as bad ‘lepers’. A leper and a leaper are very, very different things

If Big Bucks and Tidal Bay jump the last together Tidal Bay will do him for pace
Great bet 260-1 There must be some real mugs on Betfair
I thought the 14-1 on offer today was crazy,No chance – as talented as Tidal Bay is, Big Bucks is more so. There’s no way any horse is getting past BB in a scrap for the line. Machine
Has anyone under 55 seen a better NH horse? I have years to spare and only Arkle impressed me more and I am not even sure of that. But my memory is fading.
I’m going to assume this is some kind of joke (please, Lord). Yes he’s been awesome so far, but a little bit of perspective needed here.
‘If’ he were to go and win the Champion this year (an above average renewal, for sure) then that would make him something special. But it’s easy to overlook the fact that, despite being a ‘novice’ in strict terms, he’s actually older than basically all the main players in this year’s Champion. Zaynar, Binocular, Hurricane, Solwhit, Celestial Halo …. even Punjabi’s only the same age as him. The big race experience (the one thing he lacks, to an extent) obviously helps, but we need to rid ourselves of this idea that he’s some young whippersnapper who’s going to show his elders ‘what for’. He’ll be 7 come March remember. Now, if he routs them all by 10 lengths we’re looking at a different story ….
I’m not going to go into any great depth with this post. All I’ll say is that if Kauto Star turns up at Chelts in March in the same form he was for this year’s GC, then I simply cannot see Denman getting within 4 or 5 lengths of him – even if he runs right up to his very best form
Is Ruby likely to be in Ireland on Sunday to take the ride on HF? Or is he staying at Chelters to ride (among others) Master Minded, has this been confirmed anywhere? Not that he’s usually in a fit state to ride (or walk, even) the day after the PP Gold Cup anyway … !
yes, probably – I can’t be bothered to check. But I wasn’t talking about Evasive and Pure Poetry. I was talking about MCM and STS. You can talk about formlines all you like, I prefer to look at the one time they actually raced each other
On lines through Pure Poetry and Evasive MCM is STS’ equal.
and on lines purely through themselves, then he’s not
you’re rather like those murderers who somehow convince themselves they didn’t do ‘it’. The more you regurgitate this nonsense to yourself, the sooner you’ll condition your mind to believe it’s all true
Well what a waste of time that was.
Wasn’t impressed with Fame And Glory yet again, just looks awfully slow to me. Just stays and stays and that’s it. Can’t believe people are putting him up as an Arc contender. Simple question IMO – would he win the St Leger?
If you think he would, he’s too slow for the Arc.
All this race has served to do in my eyes is to devalue the race yet again and cast huge doubts over the Derby form. Masterofthehorse beaten 16L more than at Epsom with Mourayan in 3rd?
Couple today with the 8th, 10th and 12th getting stuffed in the King Edward and I’d say this is looking like quite dodgy Derby form.
You’re very much a Mr "glass half empty" type aren’t you? I’m not going to bother dissecting that post, but suffice to say I disagree with just about every word of it
"But along comes Stacelita, beats absolutely nothing and people are raving about her and saying she’s just as good as Zarkava."
no Sir, you’ve completely misinterpreted what’s been said. No-one, that I can see of, is saying she’s as good as Zarkava. What’s been claimed is that, at this stage of the season compared to last year, their form stacks up evenly – that’s a fair comment, no? Sure, Goldikova et al went on to greater things, but who’s to say some of those behind Stacelita yesterday won’t also?
It requires a huge leap of faith to suggest she’ll ultimately match Zarkava. Zarkava was stunningly brilliant, but Stacelita could also be – the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Yesterday’s performance was absolutely exceptional IMO
I notice AP is down to ride Tatenen in the 2m Novice Chase tomorrow, but Ruby not yet declared on either of the Mullins horses (Barker and Deutschland). Seems slightly odd to me, I’d be surprised if either of those 2 beat Tatenen tomorrow.
Yep, fair enough IS – he (Hurricane FLY … I have to stop referring to him as ‘Run’!!) doesn’t appear to have any obvious weaknesses right now. It was actually more an assessment of Binocular, in as much as I think people have been a bit hasty to write him off.
Bring on next March, could be a race for the ages. Certainly at this stage looks set to be the best CH for many years
Whilst I totally agree that Hurricane Run was extremely impressive yesterday, the one remaining unknown about him is how he handles Cheltenham. If you took Binocular’s Cheltenham form out of the equation then he too would look absolutely bombproof.
It’s very hard to favour one over the other at this stage, I’d say
wow, I was definitely a Hurricane Fly sceptic before today, but that was awesome.
What price Ruby to ride to ride all 4 championship race winners at next year’s festival now??
not exactly sure what you’re insinuating here Fist, but what possible mileage is there in a trainer not having a horse primed for their biggest race of the year? And I don’t want to hear anything about him laying the horse, that would be science fiction of Spielberg proportions. Paul Nicholls has too much to lose to try and knowingly decieve the public in such a high profile race.
The last twice that Twist Magic’s run, he’s lost the race before he started – refusing to start at Kempton and then throwing Sam Thomas off in front of the stands and being extremely reluctantly going to post at Cheltenham. Bit of a cliche, but seems like he’s fallen out of love with the game and if he shows anything like that same temperament before tomorrow’s race you can draw stumps on any chance he has then and there. In terms of ability he’s a very good horse on his day, certainly superior to anything Kalahari King’s shown us thus far
and here’s me thinking it was just another uncalled for attack on Richard Hills, when all the while it was just ‘humour’. How on earth could I have got that one so wrong? You’re right, it was absolutely hilarious – I’m sure Richard Hills will be chuckling away like a good ‘un if he reads it
Let’s all just ‘live a little’ everyone, and find some other poor victim to defame. All in the name of humour, of course
am I alone in thinking the ridiculing of Richard Hills is ludicrous?
You don’t win 5 UK classics unless you’re a very good jockey. He’s under the microscope day in, day out – of course he’s going to throw in a few howlers along the way. They all do.
If you’re one of the ‘wouldnt back him with stolen money’ brigade then fine, but he’s won me money a good few times over the years and I’d have no second thoughts about backing any horse I liked with him on board. Funny how no-one ever mentions all the great rides he gives but are out like vipers the second he screws one up
unless I’ve mistaken the gist of this post, it’s not specifying just festival winners, but festival runners in general. As has been pointed out, the winners haven’t got a great track record, but certainly (off the top of my head) the majority of big race winners at Aintree have run at the Festival (again, off the top of my head, Al Eile is the only obvious one that springs to mind in being a recent exception)
