I thought box walking was like crib chewing; some sort of stable vice [although crib chewing can cause colic; not sure if I’m rigt about that. Thought the best thing would be to keep a horse turned out with a companion, but again, I’m certainly no expert in these matters.
December 3, 2009 at 17:24 #261964Has anyone under 55 seen a better NH horse? I have years to spare and only Arkle impressed me more and I am not even sure of that. But my memory is fading.
I’m going to assume this is some kind of joke (please, Lord). Yes he’s been awesome so far, but a little bit of perspective needed here.
‘If’ he were to go and win the Champion this year (an above average renewal, for sure) then that would make him something special. But it’s easy to overlook the fact that, despite being a ‘novice’ in strict terms, he’s actually older than basically all the main players in this year’s Champion. Zaynar, Binocular, Hurricane, Solwhit, Celestial Halo …. even Punjabi’s only the same age as him. The big race experience (the one thing he lacks, to an extent) obviously helps, but we need to rid ourselves of this idea that he’s some young whippersnapper who’s going to show his elders ‘what for’. He’ll be 7 come March remember. Now, if he routs them all by 10 lengths we’re looking at a different story ….
December 4, 2009 at 15:19 #262082I believe I have been misunderstood. I was mightily impressed by Dunguib; more so than any horse that I have seen since Arkle.I made no claim for future success for the horse. Just sharing my impression; no more, no less.Obviously others were not so impressed. Such is life.

Don’t worry Andy I didn’t even know he was already 6 years old.
Even if he is the best since Arkle he’s unlikely ever to prove it. For the Supreme he would be 7 year old, Champion Hurdle the following year 8 years old and 9 year old by the time he got to the Arkle or the RSA. So maybe he’ll win a gold Cup when he’s 10 years old
Now I reaslise how old he is I would say to hell with ita and miss the Supreme and find out if he is up to Champion Hurdle standerd or not. At least they would know where they stand and it would allow the horse to go chasing next season if that’s where his future lies.
Perhaps Fenton has no itentions of ever sending him chasing who knows?

December 4, 2009 at 21:17 #262127I may well wear the Gold crown, but the King does occassionally suffer from "Silver tongue" syndrome!I am one of many who cant help but heap the plaudits on Dunguib.First and foremost its his looks and confirmation,i want to see this fellow in the flesh,he really does have the look of a film star,Clark Kent/Clark Gable,he has the moves of Fred Astaire, balanced and effortless to the eye and he can leap like Patrick Swayze in Dirty dancing!Champion Hurdle,Champion Chase,Gold Cup,all being well his name is written on at least one of them!I remember thinking Superior finish and Strong Promise were 2 horses who "looked" the part but Dunguib has the X factor and yet up to now we still dont know just what the "X" is!! I look forward to finding out in due course, fingers crossed!
December 4, 2009 at 21:37 #262130Did Superior Finish run at Uttoxeter prior to the National? I’m only asking because I saw a horse walk into the paddock one days years and years ago and he completely took my breath away..not sure if I bought race cards in those days. Will have a rummage through the racecard drawer when I’ve got time. Only other times I’ve felt that was when I saw Best Mate, Sir Rembrandt and St Mellion Fairway when he ran in the Whitbread.
December 4, 2009 at 21:42 #262131He did Moe,he ran in the Midlands National!He was a beauty!

Well that shocks me. Looks more like an Arkle horse than he does a Champion Hurdler but time will tell.

What a weird thing to say about his schooling. I’ve watched many a horse when the start off, even schooled a few myself. We used to take them up the Malton Gallops to jump a log and it bordered on the comical the way they got over it. You would have thought they would never jump a hurdle.
Don’t get what he’s trying to say about the Champion Hurdle…maybe he thinks he would be prone to errors at the speed they travel or something.
He did say something about him not jumping great but jumped the last 2 ok. I thought he jumped perfectly well and if anything bends his back and jumps more like a chaser than a hurdler.
Man worries too much!
December 5, 2009 at 12:33 #262239Let the horse go and win the Supreme Novices before we start guessing his target for the year after.
