Slightly off topic but I’m still waiting for Dylan Thomas’ second runner over hurdles. There are three of his offspring due to make their racecourse debuts in NH Flat races this week, though, so it may be that the NH scene will be graced by a few more of his progeny in due course.

Far West certainly cemented his place at the top of the juvenile tree yesterday. Even though there are undoubtedly more good horses to be seen in this sphere, it’s going to take a very good one indeed to lower his colours.

Tomorrow’s Ludlow contest centers around Bangor winner Tidal Way and Nicky Henderson’s second juvenile of the season in Amoralist. Waving could be of some interest on his breeding given his one good flat run whilst French flat winner Vasco D’Ycy is something of an unknown quantity whom connections will be hoping to fare better than stablemate Chendiyr.

I’ll be particularly interested to see how Amoralist runs as we tried to buy him at Doncaster sales.

Edit: I see he’s a non runner but holds an engagement next week.

A pretty decent performance by Counsel there and in a good time too. That may prove to be particularly strong form.

The entries have been made this morning for the first of Cheltenham’s Triumph Hurdle trials on Saturday. If they all stand their ground it should be a mouthwatering clash between the best juveniles seen out so far.

That was a highly impressive debut performance from Our Conor. Won with any amount in hand and one would be very hard pressed to name a juvenile who’s jumped better this season.

I can only think of one

On a related issue, does anyone know when juvenile handicaps start. I know there aren’t any before the end of the year.

Bachellor what you think of performance by MC Vicar on sunday

Tuffers do you own the horse in Poetic Power only just seen your posts on him and just to say good luck with horse as well.

    Hi Darren

I thought McVicar put in a solid display. He travelled and jumped well and showed his ability to handle testing conditions. In truth though the opposition didn’t make it much of a test for him.

Thanks for the good wishes re Poetic Power. My brother and I run the syndicate that owns him. He is very much a work in progress as he has been very keen and we are teaching him to settle. Paddy Brennan thought he settled much better on Sunday than on his debut but until he encounters fast ground he has no chance of staying 2m at the moment. That’s why we are just giving him three runs to get a handicap mark and then we will give him the winter off.

It can be very easy to forget what a shock it is for these three year olds to go from running on summer ground over 1m to 1m4f with 8 or 9 stone on their backs to running over 2m including jumping hurdles on bad ground with 11 or 12 stone on their backs. Only the toughest manage to handle that transition.

A bloodless victory for McVicar yesterday although he at least proved his ability to handle testing conditions. Poetic Power was never going to get home in that ground. He’ll have one more run before his winter break.

Poetic Power takes on McVicar at Huntingdon on Sunday so it will be interesting to see how close he can get to him. The plan with PP is to give him three quick runs to get a mark and then put him away until the spring. We already know he needs good ground so we don’t want to be running him on winter ground. Hopefully he will continue learning to settle at the weekend and we’re pleased that Paddy Brennan is once again able to ride as we felt he gave him a really good introduction on Monday.

It will certainly be much more competitive in the juvenile sphere from now on with all the big money purchases starting to see the track. The Henderson horse looks as though he will take an awful lot of beating next time.

Good to see him back to form. Apparently he goes for the Morgiana next followed by one of the Christmas hurdles.

Tidal Way won very comfortably in the end but it looked at one point as though all four might take a hand in the finish. As expected, Poetic Power was keen early but jumped really well and his effort just petered out as lack of fitness told. He should come on plenty for the run.

A good performance by Handazan but it probably franks Far West’s for more than anything.

Barring soft ground, Poetic Power will finally make his debut for us tomorrow under Paddy Brennan.

Poetic Power misses Aintree as he is slightly lame after ripping off a shoe schooling. Hopefully he’ll run either at Bangor on Monday or Hereford on Thursday.

I see that Timeform have given For Two a rating of 135p for his run in France before joining Paul Nicholls. That puts him just one pound below Far West so it will take a good ‘un to beat him on Sunday.
