Hi guys, not been on here before so hello :D

OK, where to start? Im after rehoming an ex racer is the blunt the question but it’s where to get one from. Id prefer one that comes straight from racing rather one that’s been passed to numerous inexperienced people that have created further problems.

Im after a gelding and preferably between 5-8 years old – straight from the field or that has been reschooled a little but I do want something I can bring on myself and eventually all going well will doing showing (TARRA/RoR, etc).

He would be kept with my Arabian mare who is currently in foal with a 5* home that could be checked.

Is there anyone on here that point me in the right direction? x

New Beginnings were at Wetherby the other week with Mr McGoldrick; they retrain and rehome ex racehorses that are found to be suitable for rehoming. Their website is http://www.newbeginningshorses.org.uk tel 01759 369810 They are based in Yorkshire. I was very impressed with their commitment. Mr McGoldrick has a place for life there, and they use him as a lead horse, but they also rehome as many as possible [on a loan basis, that is].

Depends where you are in the country.

Homing Ex-Racehorses Organisation Scheme is based in Wantage

    The Throughbred Rehabilitation Centre

    has a base in Lancaster

Racehorse Re-homing Centre is based in Combe St. Nicholas in Somerset

For Scotland and the North try

Lucinda Russell supports the latter and has had a significant number of her ex-inmates re-homed in recent times.

There are others. A google of ‘Rehoming racehorses’ throws up a few.

On a linked subject, I’m hoping to do a feature for TRF soon on an ex-racehorse called Rocknest Island. A double flat winner, the mare was retired in 2009 and has spent her time since with the estate agent rep who is selling our house. She is hoping to take the mare one-day eventing next year.

Thanks for that Rob, Ive spent hours googling and looking at the main sites but find that a lot of the rehoming centres seem to want a high payment then a monthly direct debit setting up :? .. I wanted something more personal really like a direct connection, I dont really want a long term loan – I want it to be mine (forever home though not to sell on) and ideally want something that hasnt already starting its reschooling as my last boy had been spoilt by two inexperienced owners.

Ive had a few people email me with different options already so just need to see who I get a feel for and get that instant connection :D

Whichever I go for they will be getting the best home thet could ever want  and will be spoilt rotten!

Greatwood would be another idea. There’s also a racehorse rehabilitation centre down here in the South of England, just stuggling at the moment to remember its name. They sponsor once a year at Fontwell Park.
