She certainly looked completely out of place in the NH stores section of the Doncaster Spring Sale.
As a general point would you say there is any difference at all in staying 1m4f in a standard flat race and staying 1m4f in a bumper? I’m assuming that in general the softer winter ground would tend to make it more of a test but I didn’t know whether the tendency for bumpers to be slowly run might favour speed over stamina.
Is the idea to buy something fairly cheaply, win a junior bumper and then sell it on for a profit at one of those Cheltenham raceday sales that seem to attract the type of buyer with more money than sense.
We have one eligible for the £50,000 Newbury bumper so the plan was to win a 3yo bumper and then sell on. The only problem is she’s by Avonbridge so we might have overcooked the speedily bred bit slightly
Thanks, Stilvi. Would you describe them as competitive, though?
Elliott Smith – no-one should listen to Elliott alone for their own safety.
Well that hasn’t started well unless it was an unbelievably complicated plot to quietly back Downtown Boy at 50s!
Of course, it now sticks out like a sore thumb having four horses sent over from Ireland for a very low grade Wolverhampton meeting by a trainer who hasn’t had a runner in either country for years.
The reality is, though, that last night I don’t imagine there were many people paying close attention to the card for Wolverhampton and by the time it appeared on the radar of the racing media the money was already down.
That being the case, the question you need to ask is have any rules of racing been broken? There can be no suggestion that these horses have been run down the track recently to get their marks down as none has run since 2010.
I, for one, hope connections pull it off. They’ve waited for nearly 3 years to run these horses and if any one of them can win it will be an amazing feat of training.
Trainer seems to have even less form than the horses..
Is it too late to get my 50p Lucky 15 on?
I think so. If you’d done an e/w yankee when they were all double figure prices then fair enough but they are all now very short prices and apparently the bookies are going SP only on the last two.
You really couldn’t make up a better back story if you tried. The thing is, though, it’s not as though the authorities can argue that the horses haven’t been running on their merits. They simply haven’t been running at all!
My approach all week will be to oppose the flat-bred horses in favour of NH types as conditions look as though they will be very testing which is likely to make life difficult for the flat types.
Wouldn’t be keen to take a short price about MTOY on very testing ground particularly as all these novices have to carry 11st 7lb which will make stamina even more important.
Un Atout looks the obvious one to go for if you’re inclined to oppose the fav.

The BHA Racing Admin website (you need to be an owner or trainer to log in) gives details of all horses claimed and also provides details of all friendly claims.
If you let me know which races you are interested in I’ll be happy to look them up for you.
Poetic Power has been awarded a mark of 100 this morning

I’d be interested to hear your views, BH, on where the handicapper plucked that from.
Must admit to only just reading this thread.
For those of us who cannot manage 14 pages can you give your current assessment of the Triumph Hurdle market. It strikes me as one of the most difficult of all the ante-post markets. I have no statistics but I assume it is rare for the the pre-Christmas favourite to go on to succeed at the Festival? To my eyes the current favourite looks extremely poor value.
Far West’s form looks very strong and it’s difficult to see on what basis you would want to oppose him at the moment. I think he will be very difficult to beat indeed.
He jumped fine as usual and for a moment towards the end of the back straight, he did look like he was travelling with intent. If he ever settles then he does have the requisite breeding and ability to win races. However, am I to understand that he’s off to be an eventer now or will he get to continue his path of destruction through the juvenile ranks?
He won’t run again unless he can be taught to settle.
Later on in the afternoon at Ludlow, a bunch of horses have the sheer temerity… the utter audacity to think that they can run on the same turf as Poetic Power. The likes of Alan King, Noel Quinlan, Nicky Henderson and John Ferguson really have some nerve sending the comparatively mediocre newcomers King Of Dudes and Sky Khan and the modest formed Amoralist and Bordoni to cut turf with racing’s next superstar.

The frustrating thing is that the Dylan Thomas/Sadler’s Wells cross is already looking like it may be as potent over hurdles as it is on the flat.
We’re hopeful that carting Stevie Donohoe round Wolverhampton on Sunday has taken the edge off him enough to enable Robbie McCarth (who rides him all the time at home) to have some chance of steering him.
After the race he’s off to Sarah Stretton to be re-trained as unless he can be taught to behave we really are wasting our time.
Thanks, BB. Do you have a theory as to why deep harrowing doesn’t affect the times?
It will be interesting to see how CH4 deal with the issue on Boxing Day. Will they interview Nicholls, Smith, neither or both?
