It’s going to have a massive impact under the current restrictions. But if people can sit at home and bet online that will go some way to helping keep both industries above water.
I usually play a small patent on my days off. And I would usually go to my local bookie to do so. But given what the official advice is just now I’ll play on my phone.
The current situation of continuing behind closed doors is far more preferable than the one you seem to be advocating.
I think it’s hugely unlikely that racing will be suspended. But if it is then it won’t be for a prolonged period. I’d imagine anyone posting on here is acutely aware of how intertwined racing and bookmaking are and how one industry relies so heavily on the other.
If racing was to be suspended for something like 3 months (for it to be effective you’d imagine it would be something like that) then pretty much every independent, and more than one major retailer would surely go to the wall.
I personally don’t think there will be much heavier restrictions put in place against sporting events than where we are now. Most have been suspended for now but none are so supportive of major industries in the way racing supports the bookies.
The harm done to lower league football clubs and probably some premier league ones as well will be enormous too however.
No I would imagine that is restricted to things like large outdoor festivals and major sporting events where a large number of the emergency services are on standby or in attendance.
If I remember correctly, there’s got to be two ambulances present at a meeting so given that there’s probably going to be a pruning of some fixtures (I don’t think we will have more than 2 meetings a day by this time next week) then the chances of racing being completely stopped in the near future seems unlikely imo.
I’m probably in the minority in really enjoying chapman. I don’t agree with 90% of what he says but he’s clearly speaking with passion and isn’t afraid to ask difficult questions to those in the influential jobs in racing.
Francesca Cumani is painfully bad regardless of the code she’s commenting on. Luke Harvey isn’t afraid to laugh at himself and that’s endearing. Alice Plunkett is the best co presenter in terms of overall knowledge and Jason Weaver provides some light hearted humour. Rishi Persad, I’ve forgotten more than he’ll ever know about racing.
Some things they do well and some things I detest. The “where are they now” segment is great but the fashion section during the big flat festivals bore me to tears and remind me exactly why I’m not remotely excited by flat racing.
I’ll be taking a well earnt holiday because (apologies for the after timing) I had a great week. My main bet was an epatante and champ win double placed before Xmas. I also had indefatigable in the last alongside aramax on Wednesday.
My main thing to take from the week though will be that Gary Moore was spot on when he called Goshen a freak. The 6/1 about him winning the champion hurdle next year looks very generous if you’re into wanting to back horses where you won’t get a return for nearly a year.
The word coming out of the preview circuit was that Gary Moore thinks Goshen is the most talented horses he’s ever had by some distance. Now admittedly he doesn’t train many top level horses but he’s not usually one to get hysterical about them either.
It’s a tricky race because there’s 2 or 3 in the field that have been trotting up at mediocre tracks and one stand out bit of form that the handicapper (IMO) has over reacted to. Has anyone compared the times for the races of the likes of allmankind, solo and goshen?
Nap @ the prices I’ll put up vindication in the ultima. I think he’s masquerading as a handicapper personally.
Lay. Envoi Allen. May well win but not for me at the price.
E/w panic attack in the bumper. 10/1 is an insult.
Hi there everyone. First post.
My lucky 15 this year will be
Champ/RSA
Itchy feet/Marsh novices
