I’m not a philosopher, but I love horseracing and horseriding. I agree with Cormack’s points. Saturday was dire, very sad. But all equine fatalities are sad, no matter where they happen. I know that the vast majority of racehorses are well looked after and that the lucky ones continue to be well looked after when they finish racing.
My main concern with horseracing is with what happens to horses when they finish racing, or those that don’t make the grade and I would like to see far more emphasis put on this. Practices that go on in studs are far worse, the use of foster mares, bred to get in foal, foals killed at birth and mares used to foster foals for racing, this happens and is unacceptable. Yearlings that don’t thrive are shot, this happens too. This is what I find unjustifiable in horseracing. The thing is that these things can be changed. The risks in racing horses will always be there, but as Mr Stewart (owner of Ornais) said, life is risky, even his own son had a life changing accident whilst snow boarding.
Great post Bosranic, totally agree with you.
OK Nulty, don’t bother getting into technicalities, you don’t need to teach your grandmother to suck eggs. Horse racing is horse racing, and some people on here were asking what other horses might pitch up next year and I happened to mention two who probably will all being well, likewise for Long Run, a french bred horse who started younger and may well finish earlier, who knows.
As you all say, it was a fantastic race, so good to see Kauto Star running and jumping so well, and Denman, well, brilliantly consistent. PN is right to say he’s very proud of his horses. SWC was spot on too, gave Long Run a lovely confident ride.
For those who are asking what the opposition will be next year, apart from Weapons Amnesty, there’s Burton Port and Diamond Harry to name two. Hope they are sound for next season.
Definitely would, it’s such an exciting sport to watch, at the races or on tv, it’s brilliant.
Hey, Pinza – get off your high horse!
Well now, I have watched ML as it’s now known for years and this morning was the first morning I fell asleep watching. I think that was soon after the betting explantations. I am not a punter, (I do the scoop 6 now and again) but even I know what odds on and odds against are. I agree with Cormack that I like the insight into trainers and their yards, but not when Matt Dawson is involved. All in all, I think the new programme is very disappointing and I don’t think anyone who isn’t already interested in racing will be persuaded by the programme’s revamp. I don’t know if I’ll bother next week.
Bobs Worth keeps getting better and rises to the challenge. Should do well at the Festival imo. Lovely horse.
Well said Coggy. If only all owners of racehorses were like David Wesley Yates. Horses like Contact Dancer and Venn Ottery come to mind. OK they weren’t grade 1 horses like Monet’s Garden, but they still earned good prize money and gave their owners good days out at the races only to be thrown in the scrap heap.
sigh* Ain’t the same nowadays is it. No wonder we’re the third fattest country in the world when all a person has to do to purchase a service is shamble toward a keyboard in his Paisley Y-fronts while eating a slice of pepperoni pizza.
Good one Maxilon
. LolMatt Dawson "awesome"? Uh, don’t think this adjective applies to him.
gobsmacked that the apple on a gatepost will be a presenter on the Morning Line. He is so irritating and hasn’t a clue what he’s talking about where racing and horses are concerned. Sorry, but I couldn’t watch the ML if he is going to be a feature. Someone please tell C4 to wise up.

I don’t think we’ll ever see Kauto Star on the racetrack again, and, if we do, then his connections aren’t the people I think them to be. He got away with his life in the Gold Cup, he could easily have fallen today; he’s beyond the point of equilibrium and on a downward trajectory. For the sake of NH racing let’s have a horse that can come back each year and lead the parade at Kempton and Cheltenham. He’s got nothing left to prove to anybody, surely. And, boy, am I glad to see him finish safe and sound today.
Totally agree. That’s the Gold Cup run, the Down Royal run where he made hard work of it and now today. Following his incredible King George run last season he hasn’t been the same it looks almost certain that he’s going on the decline and it wouldn’t be fair to the legend to let him continue racing. He’s nothing at all to prove anyway. Knowing the man Clive Smith is I’d be amazed if he doesn’t retire old Kauto now.
So don’t agree. he hosed up at Down Royal, I was there and saw it. Neither of the the other two horses that day could have beaten him. He didn’t win today but he still came in ahead of good horses, a couple of which didn’t even finish. We all know he has nothing to prove, but if he still enjoys his racing why not keep him in training. And why knock AP, a lesser jockey would have come off when he paddled through the second last.
Looking at the race again, I think he was knocked by a horse behind. Such an unfortunate incident, very sad. just wish it didn’t have to happen.
Racing Post has a great piece on this great horse. Best best wishes to Monet’s Garden, he’s getting the best treatment and he deserves it all
