I backed Monet’s Garden at 5/1 long before Kauto Star was even being considered as a 3mile chaser, so slightly gutted about about that seeing as 13/2 has been readily available on the exchanges.

Had a small amount on Yes Sir to place at 6’s and they will be my only two bets.

If Kauto Star stands up he wins in my opinion, he will have too msny gears for these other 3mile chasers. The main worry is his jumping, they wont hang around and his jumping isnt always great when he’s going a fair clip.

Also be interesting to see what he finds if he’s made to battle in the last 2 or 3 furlongs……… will the stamina run out?????

Quote: from Jane on 9:48 pm on Dec. 19, 2006[br]I was struggling too with Q37 so decided to search google images by the name of each horse. Looking at the possible answers you’ll see why this wasn’t a good idea!

    I quite imagine………..

I searched google images for the Lester Piggott pic question and that was very helpful…… as you probably found out

Thats the one we have guessed at for 2 but we werent sure whether it was a mis print or whether the stewards diqualified it from second and made the mistake of placing second again……. you know what stewards are like!

I will always remember my boy No Chance To Dance

and for bad reasons i will always remember Ballinger Ridge (the race at Lingfield that has most likely got Fallon into all this trouble amongst other races)

ofcourse others i will never forget: Giant’s Causeway, Dessie and Solerina

Any Tom, Dick or Harry could train loads of winners with his ammunition imo…
Agreed……..

voted for Evan, he can not only train many winners but he can transform horses that he accquires.

I just cant believe the price of Kane Heliki…….. when i first saw the decs for the race, i thought they would go about 6/4 each of two.

I may be reading it all wrong, but i cant see Kane Heliki getting beat.

and that isnt even my nap of world cup night – Heart Alone in the sprint looks like a penalty kick for me.

Im not a pro, and i dont think i will ever be in that line of business.

Id advise anyone who is interested in betting to read Barney Curley’s autobiography, which someone has already mentioned on here. Not only does it give some sound advice but its also a very good read.

Im only 21 but been into racing for many years at different levels. Im only just starting to become familiar with jump form and horses to watch for/be wary of.

I will have a bet most days, but there has to be some value……. which their rarely is during the week.

With many friends working in yards across the country (mainly flat yards) i do recieve my fair share of ‘inside info’ – however, ive learnt to listen to the inside info and then most of the time ignore it unless you think the horse has a chance yourself, fairly obvious you would think, but it is so easy to get drawn in.

Its just like market movers, very tempting, i know especially when the money comes for a Barney Curley, Stuart Williams or Ian Williams trained horse, unless you are there at the start of the gamble you are more than likely to lose money.

I leave all my big bets for the big(ger) races. At least then you know all the ones with form will be trying for the big prizes. Having said that, i had a terrible Royal Ascot at York last year.

The main thing that i dont think anyone has said yet on this thread is to never back a horse odds on in a handicap.

To help everyone on their way this year, my strongest selection this year is NAKHEEL for the Eclipse……. i really hope Mark Johnston runs him there.

The 2yo’s is something i really specialise in. I know pedigree doesnt win races, but from pedigree you can find out many things, including whether the horse is likely to be an early type, what sort of trip will it want etc etc. I think 2yo races are where i make the most profit form the stake i put on. I do get to hear about the good ones but unless something makes me like them i wont back them (i missed channon’s 2yo winner today) after being told about it the other day. I just didnt like the dam and i thought the race was very competitive.

Quote: from Maxilon 5 on 4:06 pm on Mar. 19, 2006[br]If I was in any position to do so, I would swap the Midlands Grand National for this anomaly of a race.

Let the chinless ones gather on the Saturday for their day out.

The race disrupts the flow. It isn’t connected to anything which happens before or after. Form is impossible to assess accurately. And yet, because it’s part of the festival, most people feel compelled to have a bet. Therefore, it’s a bookies benefit.

I’d rather have a 4 furlong sprint up the new course for still-fit steeplechasers – who the general racing public might know – but who can no longer jump fences through injury.

At least that tests a turn of foot. (I’m only half joking!)

    Anyone else dislike the race?
It isnt my FAV race of the festival but i like it. I enjoy the challenge of looking over pointing form from this country and Ireland. The form isnt hard to assess at all……. you obviously just dont look for it. I have had plenty of success in the race and im not a point to point fan, i rarely go.

I didnt have a bet this year as i thought the ground had gone against most with chances. The one i did fancy was Bother Na.

I think it gives the pro jocks some time off during the busy festival, who also like the watch the race.

Without it, i think the races would get a bit too repetitive. Its different and long may it continue

They have just managed to find his peak, maybr in another couple of years time, but not next season.
He’s already eight: I very much doubt that we’ll ever see Brave Inca over fences now.

I hope we dont, but i think we may do in a couple of years. I really think he is a horse that can go on for some time. Many people say he has hard races, but the only reason he has to be ‘urged’ is because he keeps plenty up his sleeve.

Quote: from aston on 2:00 pm on Mar. 20, 2006[br]I really hope they go novice chasing with BI next season. With FL in the yard, Murphy might try and persuade BI’s connections to go down that route, and Im sure they will do as he suggests. He would be very exciting if taking well to fences, and hes gone to the top of the hurdle tree.
What price BI for the Arkle?
Why go chasing with him? when something isnt broke, dont fix it!

If only those two had been in the race. Brave Inca would have paid out far better odds when he beat them.

    How true

Quote: from Slooch Arm on 12:19 pm on Mar. 20, 2006[br]Well Brave Inca has got to be the luckiest Champion Hurdle winner ever. No Feathard Lady, no Harchibald and an undercooked Hardy Eustace? BI wouldn’t have made the frame if all his opponents had been there fit and ready.

    LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY!!!!!

(Edited by Slooch Arm at 12:20 pm on Mar. 20, 2006)
Dont agree with that at all. Ok, Feathered Lady wasnt in the race, but how good is she, really?

Harchibald will never win a champion hurdle as nothing can win that race on the bridle and if he is to win it, thats what he will have to do.

Hardy Eustace undercooked or just past it now…….. i would go for the later. Dessie said he had him the best he could get him, which was near enough spot on and just wasnt good enough on the day.

Who said Brave Inca wouldnt have been able to fend off something that finished fast………. wasnt macs joy finishing fairly quickly??

It was a competitive race and his willingness won it, its going to take something VERY special to beat him next year. I would like to hear your suggestions as to what is good enough.

Quote: from Kevin on 9:20 am on Mar. 18, 2006[br]I went to the Festival for the first time this year. It was truely fantastic. However much I loved the racing I found dealing with the crowds difficult. Tuesday was just too busy for me and I could not face the prospect of the Friday. I found it impossible to move around and could just not get a decent view of the races or paddock. As such I went home and watched the Gold Cup day in the comfort of my own home.

From a punting perspective I got slaughtered on the first two days, no winners. Straw Bear was the closest I got and fancied Brave Inca but could not back it at the price. Fondmort ws a big one for me but Kadoun at 50/1  put me well in profit for the whole meeting. Don’t ask me how I picked that one. Highlight for me was that my mates horse ran well and came back in one piece.

Yesterday was fun. Had Detroit City and Black Jack Ketchum so no complaints.

Next year I will be back but probably only for two days. All four is just too much for me.

Truely believe now that flat racing is just a useful distraction between National Hunt seasons. What an experience.

I normally seldom back each way. However I backed Fire Dragon 4th in the 20 runner Long Walk at 25/1. Was really cheesed of to find out that my internet bookie was only paying out 1/4 odds on the first three as this was a non handicap. His normal odds are 1/5th odds first three. Checked a few others and this appears to be the industry standard. That appears to be a very poor deal, especially on the feature race of the Festival 3rd day. I am pretty sure this was not always the case and paying out on the first four in 20 runner non handicaps was common years ago. Does anyone know when this changes or am I totally wrong here?
After my first festival i said the same about the crowds, but you get used to it and after going again you soon realise that it is the large crowds that make Cheltenham so special.

I think i must be mad because i could not even consider going to the Festival if it wasnt for all four days!
