Went first day and off to a flyer with Noland but that was it. Home rest of week and My Way, Fondmort and desert quest ensured a nicely ahead festival
My way fav winner simply cos ive followed this classy indvidual all year
Kicking myself about Detriot. desrted him at last minute
Best race for me was the arkle with two superb horses finishing first and second
Sad sights were the deaths and also, although ive knocked him plenty, BOS clearly feeling a bit upset pre race (why one arth was he still contracting in market) with perhaps memories of his least fav course digging in.
Two great horses in Barra and Moscow faded too. Thanks for memories there
March 17, 2006 at 20:10 #69957Most enjoyable. Punting was not great but a couple of performances that I really enjoyed, notably Brave Inca and My Way de Solzen. Also Desert Quest was very good. County Hurdles are rarely won like that and it would come as no surprise to see him develop into one of Britain’s best Champion Hurdle prospects next season. Certainly better than anything we saw in either novice event.
Of the chasers I was very taken with the front two in the Arkle. Star de Mohasion was impressive also but with him and Voy Pour Ustedes winning it raises the question of whether the 5-y-o allowance is too generous for the percocious French breds.
The Gold Cup winner War of Attrition was very good and is unexposed as a stayer. I hope to see him at Punchestown.
March 17, 2006 at 20:38 #69958Poor week punting: eight bets, one winner Fondmort at 3.66/1, three bets elsewhere all losers.
Enjoyed the Festival as ever, though inevitably marred by the fatalities of course. Roll on Aintree and Punchestown.
Monet’s Garden the horse I’d single out. Another grey son of Roselier destined for great things over 3+miles.
The changing of the guard: Ta very much Moscow Flyer and Baracouda, two horses genuinely deserving of that much over-used epithet ‘great’. As Ms. Hislop succinctly put it "you’ve enriched my life".
March 17, 2006 at 20:41 #69959Not the best Cheltenham ever I have to say. The highlight for me was a toss up between My Way de Solzen and todays magnificent performance by Black Jack Ketchum. Brave Inca winning the CH and Star de Mohaison on the first day came close too. The GC was a disappointment really. I couldn’t get emotional over the winner of that.
March 17, 2006 at 20:42 #69960Please can we see Monets Garden over 3m at Aintree. That is what is so promising about him, we know he stays 3m yet has shown so much speed back at 2m. He jumped so well and it shouldn’t be forgotten that he was actually the best horse at the weights in the Arkle.
March 17, 2006 at 20:42 #69962I went for two days last year and loved it. Stayed at home because of work commitments this year and it was painful to have to watch it. I’ve booked my holidays for next year already and I’ll be back for the duration next time.
Highlights –
Brave Inca, a worthy Champion Hurdler
Nina Carberry’s rodeo act today – how did she stay on board?
Black Jack Ketchum – destroyed them
War of Attrition – great race to watch and great to see Conor O’Dwyer, who seems a thoroughly amiable individual, win another Gold Cup
Lowpoints –
Moscow Flyer and Baracouda bowing out. Great memories and sad to see them finish their great careers

March 17, 2006 at 20:48 #69963I forgot Nina Carberry. That was sheer poetry in motion. Amazing!
March 17, 2006 at 20:54 #69964Monets Garden’s run was a real eyecatcher for the future, can’t wait to see him over further.
Financially my ante post bet on Detroit City at 40’s got me out of trouble after a woeful first three days.
March 17, 2006 at 22:02 #69967Two winning days from the four, those being Tuesday & Thursday
Four winners on the first day but still disappointed that Artist’s Muse didn’t quite get home in the last , that was played a bit heavy and the pocket felt the effect
Non So on Thursday was a good bet for me at a decent price so for me I had a good meeting
Many of the well known names running I left them alone and that seemed to be a good move , although I should have kept a closer watch on the jockeys . Carberry , Geraghty and Walsh could have been followed but McCoy always lets me down at the Festival when I take a view over one he rides. Many of his mounts are restricted prices and tend to be hyped up much more than other jockeys
For him to ride three short priced favourite winners at such a big meeting does not get me excited as much as solving a large handicap that provides a good priced winner
Roll on the Lincoln and the Grand National but Hedgehunter could already be the winner
March 17, 2006 at 22:21 #69970I think that, despite his gallant effort today, Hedgehunter has it all to do in teh National off that weight. Something off a lower weight surely has to do him on the run in.
March 17, 2006 at 22:24 #69974Agree with Cormack. As likeable as he is, and he ran a cracker today but at times he hasn’t always found as much as seemed likely in his career and there is likely to be a stronger finisher at Aintree considering his weight.
March 17, 2006 at 22:35 #69975Possible today would have taken the edge off him too…
Very hard to follow up a GC with a national win. Reminds me alittle of garrison Savannah here
You can see something catchng him in the run in
March 17, 2006 at 23:04 #69976my away de solzan wasnt my first choice but that night before race i had a dream he won!
Thats funny ! I had a dream too Wednesday night that My Way De Solsen would win and he wasn’t my first choice either ! Had a terrific Friday punting wise and had a good Thursday too though Wednesday i had a shocker like just about everybody else ! ÂÂÂ
March 17, 2006 at 23:23 #69979I think that, despite his gallant effort today, Hedgehunter has it all to do in teh National off that weight.
I’d agree. It was a cracking run today, but it would take something amazing to win the national off top weight.
I wonder if there’s going to be a future for the horse in 3m+ conditions races and high class handicaps. It would be a pity if his national performance last season is going to stop him winning another race.
If you were the owner, how would you place him from now on?
Thats funny ! I had a dream too Wednesday night that My Way De Solsen would win
3 years ago, a few days before the festival, I dreamed the winner of the Champion Hurdle.
Unfortunately, the horse that won my dream wasn’t Rooster Booster!
(it was Intersky Falcon :cheesy: )

March 17, 2006 at 23:42 #69980Quick Summary:
a) Tuesday was the most depressing and miserable day’s betting I had in years. I backed Straw Bear and Juveigneur, (plus a small RF Juv and Irish Hussar). Cheers Ruby!!
Got battered at Southwell, (once again). Whole meeting banded racing cannot end quickly enough. Could have packed in the game there and then.
b) Lost another packet Wednesday after waking up with renewed optimism. Mon More would have cleared losses only to be beaten by…errrrr….You’re Special??? Still clueless as to how and why, but that’s Cheltenham.
c) Got level with My Way De Solzen and a Liddiard horse I was given the wink about up at he sandpit. Was harassed by a down and out in the bookies and forgot Non So was running, such was my haste to get out. Gave a bit back when Jonjo’s Osaro was pulled up in the last.
d) The less said about today the better. Summed up in the Grand Annual, where I back two of Henderson’s, neither of which was Greenhope. The worst Gold Cup I have ever seen. Backed Cornish Rebel once more; that nice Ruby Walsh can **** his Christmas card this year. Nice performance by Detroit City though, in the Triumph.
And I agree with Clivex…the Arkle was the finish of the week and Monet’s Garden the horse to take away.
March 18, 2006 at 08:11 #69981I had a disastrous meeting on the punting front. There’s no point nicking the best prices ante-post if the horses don’t win.
March 18, 2006 at 09:07 #69982Had 2 winners on the Tuesday (Voy Por Ustedes & Native Jack).
Not a sniff on the Wednesday.
Fondmort on the Thurs & BJK on the last day so managed to end the week down, although not too harsh.
Highlight was the battle between VPU and Monet’s Garden. Both horses of great potential.
Lowlight (with the obvious exception of the fatalities) was the bloody weather.
Froze my arse off on the Friday :( .
