I wouldn’t put it past Air Force Blue to bounce back. Look at Power a few years back.

Don’t worry about breeding just worry about what I say, it has similar breeding to eagle top which is another donkey. I am only interested in superstars in racing I can’t be assed with these listed/group 3/2 horses they’re all sh*t. I will give everyone on this forum £500 each if wings of desire wins the Derby. :-(

Lol! I would laugh so much if he hacked up at Epsom! And I would laugh harder if he won by a nose.

Is Sariska a donkey? She beat Midday every time they met, and Midday was pretty good.

I don’t think Wings of Desire will win the Derby, but nor do I consider him a donkey. :-)

Toormore for me. He’s no more than a distinctly average Group 1 miler in the grand scheme of things, but I think he always seems like he’s a bit better than he looks on paper.

Hawk Wing was the same, though I’m not expecting a winning margin like his today.

I saw Toormore’s sire Arakan win at Newmarket in 2004. He was a smashing looking horse.

Did you see the photo of him messing about while being saddled? :yahoo:

The horse that won the dante is an out and out donkey, just turned into a staying match. :negative:

He’s well bred for a donkey.

Gleaneagles may come out of retirement now.

I did lol, and only felt slightly ashamed for doing so.

I hold my hands up – I’m the Toormore fan. I’ll see how he runs in the Lockinge first; no Night of Thunder this year and he won (just) a few weeks ago at Sandown. I hope he’ll make it to Royal Ascot, but I’m a sentimental sod and have always rooted for him.

Shame that Solow won’t run. The race was his for the taking.

Golden Horn proved last year that pedigrees can be ignored and visual impression trusted, as a horse who had never looked remotely tired in his career and who could be held up for a run. He defied the pedigree in tremendous style.

I was one who was convinced Golden Horn wouldn’t stay, and yes: he proved me wrong like all the other naysayers.

At the other end of the spectrum, I felt confident that Refuse To Bend would stay 12f back in 2003. After all, he was a Sadler’s Wells and even though his dam was a sprinter, she had previously foaled a Melbourne Cup winner by a stallion with a lower stamina index. On paper, both Refuse To Bend and Media Puzzle should have shared similar stamina – but they did not, and I guess there is still some mystery to it after all.

If dosage is your thing, Refuse To Bend’s DI and CI were less towards the ‘brilliant’ end of the spectrum than the average for 2000 Guineas winners and almost spot-on for recent Derby winners. But then, Golden Horn’s figures weren’t that much different and he did just fine.

The above assumes the difference between the performances of Refuse To Bend and Golden Horn in their respective Derbys was entirely down to stamina; of course, in reality there was a difference in class as well (let’s not forget that Refuse To Bend trailed in miserably some sixteen lengths adrift of… ahem, Kris Kin…)

Can someone please tell me if Brigadier Gerard truly stayed 12f or whether his King George win was down to class alone? I wonder what his results on the gene test would have been.

What was the rating of the lowest rated Derby winner? We could be in that territory this year I feel.

Not the lowest rated, but Workforce was also hugely flattered after shuffling to victory in a shocking Arc after winning an appalling Derby. He also belongs in the Ruler Of The World/Sir Percy pile.

That’s a good point. Amongst those behind him at Epsom, I can only think of Rewilding who went on to do anything else of note (may he rest in peace).

This is interesting, but won’t the romantics among us mourn the loss of the sentiment behind Tesio’s famous quote? Horses’ campaigns being mapped out based on genetic tests… I’m a scientist by profession, but it’s faith and reading pedigrees that make racing fun for me (sentimental old fool).

“The Thoroughbred exists because its selection has depended, not on experts, technicians, or zoologists, but on a piece of wood: the winning post of the Epsom Derby. If you base your criteria on anything else, you will get something else, not the Thoroughbred.”

    OK, I got one.

Can you find a connection between the 1983 Nassau Stakes (Goodwood) winner and a non-winning mare named ‘Mountain Flower’, born almost twenty years earlier in California?

Google will make it easy if you can’t work it out!

What was the rating of the lowest rated Derby winner? We could be in that territory this year I feel.

In recent years, Ruler of the World isn’t it? Him or Sir Percy. The latter had a RPR of 120 I think.

Disappointing Dante result for me. I have antepost bets on Midterm at 10-1 and 8-1 – now I can decide whether to get 14-1 as well or give up on him. He was messing about in the paddock, very coltish, but I can’t use that as an excuse.

I hope we will see more from Midterm in the future, if not at Epsom, since he is the first out of Midday.

I thought it was an impressive performance from Wings Of Desire (that name just makes me hum that Jennifer Rush song from the 1980s, lol) I but can’t help wonder if 5-1 is a bit short considering that he’s not yet declared at Epsom.

Do you think we’re safe to assume John Gosden will supplement Wings Of Desire?

Nice pedigree – dam is a half-sister to Sariska and has also produced Eagle Top and The Lark (both placed in 12f tests at Group 1 level).

    I think I know this!

Was it Nasram, longshot winner of the King George at Ascot in 1964? He beat the favourite (Derby winner Santa Claus), big upset. Never won again as far as I know.

    He was by Nasrullah.

Now I knew Nasrullah died of a cardiac rupture (aorta, I’d suspect) in the late fifties, so I looked it up and Nasram’s date of birth is recorded as 4th May 1960. Count back eleven months… Nasrullah died on 26th May 1959… all adds up.

If I’m right, I’ve learnt something new: I never knew Nasram’s dam was the last ever covered by Nasrullah! That’s a heart warming story.

If I’m wrong, I await the correct the answer with interest. :)

The only winner I can recall at all is Lang Shining and I don’t think he won by twelve lengths!
