Not at all. Nobody is forced to watch/bet on anything. There’s easy (and free) access to all replays if you need or want it.
As long as there are the horses and jockeys available to sustain the meetings and the punters come through the gates, why on earth wouldn’t they race on a major bank holiday? We want to grow racing don’t we? This is probably a good day to do it.
I guess Wolvo is there in case of abandonments really but shouldn’t be an evening meeting. The poor sods working in the bookies deserve an early night (I was one till the middle of last year). Assuming they don’t make them open late anyway, we never did Boxing Day but may have changed by now, I don’t know.
On a side note, how poor were the post-race comments about Elgin hitting the right notes or similar? Don’t tell me that the brains trust at RUK got Elgin confused with Elgar….
I reckon they’ve lost their marbles.
Is there another sport that allows utter no-hopers to be in the field at the highest level and who can set off on equal terms at the start?
Yes, many if not all of them. The football World Cup being the obvious example. San Marino and Liechtenstein go through the same qualifying process that Germany and France do. They wont ever qualify let alone win the thing but they are allowed to participate and do so. Honduras qualified one year. Should they have been barred because they were never going to win it?
Happens in individual sports too, how many of the 128 who make the main draw of a tennis grand slam have a chance of winning? Very few. But they might go on a decent run and earn a few quid just as this horse might.
I see odds of 750/1 chalked up in places. You run this race 750 times and she might win once. Sure she’d almost certainly need the rest to fall over but it can and does happen. Rarely, yes, but not never.
I am reminded of ‘no hoper’ Steven Bradbury in a Winter Olympic speed skating final. His rivals all had a pile up near the end and through he went to gold.
If you bar the ‘no hopers’ why even have sport at all?
There was some kind of band on when I went to Wolverhampton recently but they sold separate tickets for racing only or racing and band. No idea if/how that would work at Leicester but you would have thought they could have done that.
Like with the introduction of greyhounds and enhancement of our sports service, the casino was down to public demand.
‘Public demand’ eh? Did they have trouble finding one elsewhere?
You’ve left out the absolute humiliation one would endure actually buying the Daily Star, Mike.
The way the Telegraph has gone I think I’d be more embarrassed buying that.
Doesn’t the Star have some dog coverage (beyond the bare minimum at least) as well? Pretty sure I remember that being the case last time I saw a copy (It was lying around in the bookies, honest guv
)Was at the meeting and wasn’t looking forward to coming back and reading this. Feared the worst as the dreaded screens were up for a fair while. RIP.
Done as best I can. Don’t use social media for that purpose. Had to put yearly for attendance but it’s probably more like 4-5 times a year. I work Monday to Friday and my local courses rarely race on evenings/weekends.
I don’t necessarily agree with it but I fully understand why they go for the day out/boozing crowd. Few have the time or money to go frequently so you need to get occasional visitors who spend more per visit. Personally I do enjoy a few beers at the races (just as I do when I go to watch other sports) but not to excess. If I want to get plastered and watch racing there are far cheaper ways to do it than at a course. Plus I’m bad enough at punting sober…

No idea if many people I know use social media to follow racecourses but I doubt it. People surely tend to follow things they are already interested in rather than what they think might interest them. So in that respect I’m not sure how much potential there is for attracting newbies in that way. Just my two pennies, I could be completely wrong.
The .5f bit would probably be a bit too precise in many cases.
Liking the 6 places with Skybet. Don’t seem to have slashed the prices relative to rivals to compensate either looking at oddschecker. Had a small each way on Who Shot Thebarman at 40s. Has form in the race which I like. 9/2 on my money if he comes top 6 so worth a shot. Good luck all.
As someone who is yet to reach 30 I bloody well hope it doesn’t get harder as you get older (finding the winners that is…), think I’ll get out while I can if it does!
Speaking purely anecdotally as a former six year inmate/employee of a bookies there seems to come a point in most punters lives where they gradually start to give up and move towards nothing but favourites.
I’d say his views are in line with most of the racing public. The majority of followers of the sport wouldn’t give a rat’s backside about it if not for the punting. Nothing wrong with that by the way, every sport has unique qualities and racing’s (dogs included obviously) is the intrinsic link to gambling.
No goalscorer tempts me for Chelsea game after Monday night (when I backed 2-2 after saying to someone at work that it would probably be a snoozefest despite the massive hype). 8s or 9s is about.
John McDoanld (who apparently is the caller for Darts & Boxing ?)
Yes, his main gig is being the MC for PDC darts. Also does some boxing and pops up elsewhere occasionally. Very good at what he does but can’t see it working with racing.

Bare bones BBC article. Only one actual example given and that relates to a sister company of a fairly tin pot firm. I believe it was on the front of The Times but their website is also behind a paywall. Probably goes into more detail.
Sterling first goal, Man City 3-2 375/1

I absolutely agree, perhaps I was being a bit unclear (been a long day). If this advert is as described then it has no place anywhere near the public eye. They are confusing fact with opinion. You could argue that the bookie thinks that even a 10/11 shot is more likely to lose than win as there is a discrepancy between their book and the ‘true’ odds.
What I meant was that they could argue form can suggest a fav will win (although, again, that is opinion), the rest is total nonsense.
