I’m surprised the bookmakers haven’t shortened Binocular after that. Celestial Halo doesn’t look like he has enough class or speed to beat Binocular over 2m no matter what advantages (regarding the ground, pace and track) he has – the gulf is too large. Imagine how Binocular would have won that race today.

I hope everyone keeps on asking the ‘will he get up the hill?’ question until the day of the race, and I can get anything like evens.

I’m hoping Obama will ‘rap’ his inauguration speech.

Obviously I mean to make an ironic dig at racist stereotypes. Also because it would be awesome.

When he hits sixteen get a gay friend and a straight friend too sit him down and tell him the facts of life.

Other wise, buy some sort porn videos and a large box of cleanex, that and tell him not too wind his step mother up, tell her too not go prying. The sooner a boy gets the idea of which team he bats for the better, then you can push towards support that will give him a safe grounding.

And for crying out load drill into him too use a comdom.

Unfortunately not everyone has a gay friend. And even if they do, I think they would probably ruin the friendship if they asked them ‘Hey would you like to come around to my house tomorrow and explain the facts of life to my son?’.

These 100-1 shots never win Gold Cups, do they?

    Norton’s Coin anyone?

Does anyone else think there needs to be a standard function on word-processors/messageboards for highlighting text as ‘sarcastic’? a button next to bold, italics and underline? It would make it so much easier over the Internet.

Very witty man – his recent scrrenwipe that dealt with crusading TV Docs which ended up with group urinating in a field was top draw. Reminds me of Victor Lewis-Smith in many ways – and why his TV show was never recommissioned is beyond me – informed most of the satirical and observational comedy which has been seen since.

Yeah, I think Victor Lewis-Smith must have been an influence, as he was on Chirs Morris. TV Offal deserves a decent DVD release.

He was right about that one.. Massasoit I think was the horse in question and was given a 150 rating for winning a novice hurdle which is as he pointed out nonsense.

    That’s the one, thanks!

I’ve seen instances of that a few times, always in Graded races with either unexposed novices (as above example) or when there are exposed horses who haven’t been dropped in the handicap as much as they should have.

    (17) MANHATTAN LOVE SUICIDES – Clusterf*ck

The Blonde movement returns! Five surly Yorkshire teens bring back memories of the Primitives, the Darling Buds, and all that sort of thing – magnificently.

    (graysonscolumn)

Wow, I’m suprised to see that band there. Then again, your music tastes do seem pretty comprehensive! I’ve seen them loads of times in Leeds, so I’m afraid I’m going to have to be petty – they’re not teens (they wouldn’t thank me for saying that! but they’ve been in a few bands before, including Pop Threat, who were good too: http://www.myspace.com/popthreat) and Darran is the nicest guy you could ever meet (though surly on stage, which is only proper).

Burnt Out Landscapes was my favourite album of last year. Heat And Panic, You’ll Never Get That Guy and Life In Vain are genuine classics.

They’re touring with a New York band called Crystal Stilts soon. They’re really worth checking out too, particularly their signature track and Shattered Shine ( http://www.myspace.com/crystalstilts ).

Because BHB ratings are sometimes nonsense. Cerium is not worth that rating. If there was scope for common-sense in the framing of these races, then Nicholls would be perfectly right to run him IMO.

I think it was Nicholls who said that it was stupid that one of his novice-hurdlers was rated more than Diamond Harry, who had won far better races, and he couldn’t understand it. Diamond Harry then beat that hurdler on the bridle in his last race! I think he’s got his own ideas about BHB ratings and he’s probably right.

Once you get past the wanking jokes, he is very funny and intelligent. His two compilation books are brilliant. I wasn’t fond of Dead Set (it had no reason for existing – it was 28 Days Later with wanking jokes) but Nathan Barley was under-rated.

My parents went to that and I’d really, really like to find a decent DVD of it for them, if there is one available.

    Today !

Dammit! I’ll have to get to a newsagents sharp-ish. I’m suprised it wasn’t a splash on their website.

    Thanks Richard!

I dont find him arrogant at all. Starightforward is the word i would use. he tells it as it is and often off the cuff too and is not slow to criticise himself when mistakes are made. He doesnt cloak himself in some sort of "genius of …blah blah" image and he doesnt get labelled as "shrewdie" for little more than the reason that he says fck all

Likewise. He just seems passionate to me… I’m glad he doesn’t cloak his words with false congeniality or disclaimers of ‘Well, he is entitled to his opinion, and my opinion is…’. Do we want trainers to be guarded, trying to please everyone like a politician, or speaking in meaningless proverbs like a footballer thinking about the media reaction all of the time – or say what they think, directly and straightforwardly?

And regarding Kauto Star, I just think he is sensitive towards criticism of his horses (not himself or his training methods) especially when it takes on a vindictive or malicious tone (people shouting ‘he’s finished!’ or ‘past it!’; Clive Smith being asked if he would be retired if he didn’t win The King George on The Morning Life). With the real issues of health and safety, and well-being, that surround horse-racing, no wonder he is sensitive to anything that suggests his horses are running when ‘past it!’. When people are laying Kauto Star, they are wanting him to lose, fall, pull-up – it won’t seem nice to a trainer who is quoted as saying that Kauto Star is ‘a friend, who he would give his last apple to’.

As for Rippling Ring, I think the fact that Cerium is rated more than him is an anomaly. Who would you back in a match bet, under neutral conditions (if that was possible)? Rippling Ring is a horse with a lot of potential, was a Group 1 winner (I think) in South Africa – even if he never fulfils it, he is going in the opposite direction of Cerium. If it’s a weak renewal, he could even snatch a place if they give him too much of a lead (certainly come in the five).

Let me get this right: you seem to be complaining because Matt Williams is opinionated?

I don’t care about whether a tipster is proved to be right or wong: only that they give their opinion before the race, it is interesting, and it is backed-up with evidence or some justification. Matt does all of those in The Trading Post and is always worth a read IMO.

I don’t keep a record of any tipster but, though I only tend to buy The RP on Saturdays, he seems to field against a lot of eventual losers and pick a few winners at decent prices. Seems to be the most succesful tipster asides from Gerland Delamare, who is pretty consistent.

I don’t suppose anyone knows when The RP are doing their Dubai carnival pull-out? I don’t tend to buy it during the week but would make an exception for that.

    Hi People!

Couple of questions for you about your likes and dislikes in a commentator.

    1. During the race call do you prefer the commentator just to stick to calling the names of the horses, their position, margins and so on or do you prefer the commentator to mention the name of the jockey or the trainer as the race goes on? For example: "And then comes DDD from the in-form stable of Joe Bloggs" "Then HHH with A. Rider onboard" and does it really matter to you to know if so and so is going for a double, or a hatrick unless it is of great historical significance?

    2. Do you like the commentators to identify the horses for you? For example: "Then comes XXX in the yellow jacket, followed by the red jacket of YYY." Trade Secret: This is often done by commentators who have not fully learned the colors to buy a little more time!

    Cheers,

    Craig.

    1. I like the commentator to mention names, trainers and any facts, etc. For one thing, it makes the commentator seem interested in the race (which is, like some evidence of enthuisiasm, important). Also it’s padding – so it doesn’t sound like an automation voicing a list of names and numbers.

    2. Yes. This is just useful! Likewise it’s good to hear things like whether a horse is ‘an habitual front-runner’ to parrot The Young Fella, as it adds to the in-running narration. Indeed Holt is my favourite commentator – I also like the way that in the big races, he tries to finish with a triumphent ‘they think it’s all over…’ line. There was a thread dedicated to them on Betfair. It gives the race a sense of ocassion though obviously it would seem a tad melodramatic at the end of a Southwell seller.

I’ve changed my mind! Tatenan is my banker. Has the best form and recieves 11lb from everything else. I wasn’t impressed by Made In Taipan last time, and lot of the field need 2m4f.
