January 13, 2009 at 18:39 #203671Once you get past the wanking jokes, he is very funny and intelligent. His two compilation books are brilliant. I wasn’t fond of Dead Set (it had no reason for existing – it was 28 Days Later with wanking jokes) but Nathan Barley was under-rated.
January 14, 2009 at 20:43 #203950Very witty man – his recent scrrenwipe that dealt with crusading TV Docs which ended up with group urinating in a field was top draw. Reminds me of Victor Lewis-Smith in many ways – and why his TV show was never recommissioned is beyond me – informed most of the satirical and observational comedy which has been seen since.
Yeah, I think Victor Lewis-Smith must have been an influence, as he was on Chirs Morris. TV Offal deserves a decent DVD release.

Judged on his Wikipedia entry, that could have been down to anything from him having no time in his groaning itinerary to make another show, to terrestrial telly running scared of him, to Chris Morris moving into the same sort of territory and usurping him in show commissioners’ consciousness.
A shame either way – the man’s a ceaselesly interesting and generally fearless broadcaster. I first came across him doing the “BuyGones” strand on Club X 20 years ago, and amusing as those reminiscences on Frank Bough and Heinz Kidney Soup were, far better was to come…
