I had backed the winner on Betfair but after watching the replays began to get a bit anxious so I was then able to back the runner up at 3, to guarantee me a profit. I had no sooner sat down when Statto told us that both the winner and the second were trading on Betfair at 5/6 to ‘good money’. I went back to Betfair and found this simply was not the case. You could still back Youmzain at 2.6, and there was only about £100 on offer. Where does he get his facts?.

I must say that John Gosden is my favourite flat trainer, however I do remember him training a rather one paced stayer called Istabraq, and sometimes wonder why he didn’t spot that this fellow was a speed horse?

One I have noticed is Liam Jones. He is with Willie Haggas but has ridden most of his winners for Mark Brisbourne.
He seems capable of riding a horse to it’s greatest advantage, from the front or from behind. He is still at the stage were his winners are usually a decent price.

Yes Jonny, I think that’s just Thommo. If fat Al reads your piece he’ll be back on the drink before Cheltenham!

Was a youth working for Stanley’s at the time and was offered the opinion that HD was ‘something close to a certainty’ for the following year after his fourth in 1983. This view came courtesy of a guy called Sam Willock, my bet-settling coach (no calculators etc in them days) who had a shock of white hair and dressed like Toad (of Toad Hall.

My thanks go to Bet Large for the above, bringing back memories of Sam Willock. When I joined Ladbrokes in 1977 Sam was the senior manager of the Liverpool district, ie second in command of about twenty odd shops. He was as nice a person as you could ever meet, far too nice for Ladbrokes-which is probably why he moved on.
Surprised about the lack of calculators though, Ladbrokes had had them for some time, even in 1977.

I love talking form with fellow students of the subject, but we have to realise that we are very few in number, and form only a small percentage of the total number of people who actually back horses.
This is what makes this forum so useful.

Couldn’t agree more with all the comments expressed.
It’s a pity that the Racing Post website ran a headline that went something like "TTF horse badly injured"
Ten to Follow punters have to take the rough with the smooth (remember last season?), and I’m pleased to see the headline has now been changed to something less cynical.

    Star de Mohaison.

I know the ‘experts’ are down-grading last years 3mile novice chasers, but my favourite video race is last seasons Sun Alliance Chase, where he was brilliant.

This has developed into one of the best threads I have come across on this or any other forum. Unfortunately, the only person on this forum who we can be sure wins regularly is a chap called Barry Dennis?????
I live in hope that he will soon return to the fold because if we can’t learn something from him we may as well pack in.

ps Sorry AP, two certain regular winners!!!
