Crisp came in at 43, 2 places behind the highest ranked one-time runner, Teal. Not bad out of over 1600. I know, his performance was outstanding, but bear in mind he only ran once, the ranking is weighted to take account of consistancy as well as one-off performances.
Other horses also came down twice early but if you look at the manner in which Huperade jumped his ten fences, how did he get to the Canal Turn in 74! He was a fairly decent handicapper as well, which makes it stranger. If Mr J Carden is out there I love to hear from him.

Why has no-one mentioned The Dikler yet? Admittedly I am biased towards him, but he had a very impressive record in several King George’s, won a Whitbread, twice ran well in the National etc etc, first horse to have defeated Pendil, could run 2m or 4m4f, and impressive looking.

Compare Knowhere to the Duke of Alberquerque. They refused to let him ride in the National on at least one occasion for his own safety. Would you let him ride next Saturday ( assuming you could time-warp him forward to the present )?

Does anyone know what happened to Go-Pontinental? He was a favourite of mine back in the 70s, I loved the name, even if he was pretyy useless. The last record I can find of him is his brief appearance in the 74 National, aged 14, when he got as far as the 2nd! He was owned by a Mr R Armstrong at the time, and trained by H O’Neill at Rugby, Warwickshire.
I would be delighted to hear from anyone who knows what became of him.
Thanks

Equal 1st – Go-Pontinental, reasonable in his prime, but raced till he was at least 14 and became pretty much useless. I just loved the name.
Equal 1st – Red Rum
Close 3rd – Spanish Steps, The Dikler, Desrert Orchid, Hedgehunter, Crisp, Royal Relief, Brown Lad, Fighting Chance, Black Secret, Red Candle, Denman, Flagship Uberalles, and honourable mention to Flyingbolt, Arkle and Mill House because they were just before I started watching racing
I would love to konow if anyone out there knows what happened to Go-Pontinental

The strangest one I remember was Land Lark, who apparently died in mid air when jumping the Chair in 75. The saddest for me was probably Alverton, and maybe Grey Sombrero

February 10, 2010 at 20:21 in reply to: Other than Red Rum, who was the best National Winner? #275488L’Escargot was one of my favourites, brilliant horse, even managed a 6th in the champion hurdle. I wish i’d been around to see Golden Miller. As a lad we used to go to Pontins sometimes, and one horse, if anyone remebers him, that I remember fondly was Go-Pontinental, ran three of four times, never got anywhere. Does anyone know what happened to him?
Crisp…surely no horse deserved to win more than him. First four that year must be best group of placers ever, with L’Escargot and Spanish Steps also in the frame.
OK, maybe not Rubstic, maybe he deserves better.

February 10, 2010 at 08:27 in reply to: Other than Red Rum, who was the best National Winner? #275308The reason I picked Rubstic was twofold, the quality of the field in 78 was very poor, and, despite good going and only carrying 10 stone his time was slower than even Foinavon. Only 7 finished, and two of them were tailed off.

February 9, 2010 at 23:25 in reply to: Other than Red Rum, who was the best National Winner? #275288Manifesto ran 8 times, falling once and finishing 1st twice, 3rd three times and 4th twice, sometimes with ridiculous weights by today’s standards. I discount him because fields were often very small and competition in those days minimal. However, his record does, as you say, deserve a mention.
