JJM Sports – Peter Allis is the best commentator. Would be very interesting to hear him do a National commentary! I’d have Peter O’Sullivan, Michael O’Hehir and Richard Pitman in my National team

Surely there must be a method of constructing a fence such that it is both stable and at the same time not rigid, resulting in a fence which can accomodate a horse jumping straight into it. Park fences or national fences or timber, there must be a way of building something that wont injure if the worst happens. As for landing, most deaths in the national seem to have occured at Beechers, because of the drop, so level take off and landing should be preferred. I don’t think Aintree has been dumbed down that much, the quality of horse is higher than before, hence increased numbers of finishers, and "Pulled up" is far more common than it was 50 years ago, so jockeys are being responsible. Looking back to the post war years, the course was too harsh, but brooks have been filled in etc, and the fences themselves are what makes the race what it is.

seen The Sting a fair few times…..

I’m more for BWs than modern films, it’s all special effects, violence and bad language, and you don’t get character actors like you used to. Bring back Richard Wattis and Irene Handl

Do you have a favourite film which has everything…good cast, good soundtrack, humour and drama, excitement and suspense, colourful settings, a great story, memorable lines and memorable scenes, action, adventure, romance, good guys and villains, the perfect all-round movie, something for everyone, and which has either a U or PG rating, so a family film as well?

    My personal nomination is

The Adventures of Robin Hood ( 1938 ) with Errol & Olivia et al…..

Mr Pin done his job, got me Can’t Buy Time…..

Spent a long time looking at every horse over the last few weeks. It’s not like the old days, you used to be able to pick out a dozen or so who had absolutely no chance at all bar a pile up. Nowadays the quality in depth is far far better. Difficult to find a single horse who can’t win today.

David Coleman, almost any sporting event he commentated on had errors, hesitations and omissions. I don’t think he ever researched anything, either that or he was somewhat less than bright

Don’t know, but I have a tradition, I always watch the same film that night, "Grand National Night", an old fifties thriller. Check it out on IMDB website

With the handicap system, how do lengths, pounds etc equate to distance, ie 2m is a lot different from 4m4f. Eg, if horse A beats horse B at level weights at 2m, by 10 lengths, and then defeats horse C at level weights over 4m, again by 10 lengths, does that have a different reflection on the handicap of all three horses?

Yes Miss W, but with Coca Cola, Pepsi and the like sponsoring it, at least it wouldn’t lose £x billion. My own, somewhat revolutionary idea, would be to have a winter and summer, as well as spring and fall Olympics, all smaller than one big one, and one per year for a four year cycle. Chicago might be an intersting choice, if it could choose a couple of local sports!

By the way, changing the subject, is there a book available on the history of the Maryland Cup, similar to Reg Green’s A Race Apart?

    thanks
