Some great films were made in Britain in the 1960’s and, from a long list of candidates, the following three are unmissable –

    Billy Liar

    Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

Godfather I & II are gimmes but American History X is one fo the greatest films ever made and I’m yet to meet anyody who has seen it and doesn’t feel the same way.

A truly outstanding acting performance from the always excellent Ed Norton.

Goodfellas – How can such a little guy (Joe Peschi) be so scarey!

Matrix (first one only) – An excellent film due to new special effects and clearly well practiced scenes.

Twelve Monkey’s – the storyline is like a dark back to the future with a good twist.

Finding Nemo – One of my lads favorite and it must be half decent as I don’t mind watching it over & over with him as there are some good one-liners.
Agree with Cormack.

My favourite British "gangster" film is "Get Carter" starring Michael Caine.

Second favourite, is "The Italian Job" – the driving sequences were brilliant for their time.

Thanks for that – keep ’em coming. I’m intending to sign-up to one of those DVD hire jobs (Tesco’s or Boots), so all opinions welcome.

What’s with all the gangster films? Is this forum inhabited by half the Italian mafia? I know you’ve got connections though wils!

Totally forgotten about 12 monkeys Daylight, great film and great soundtrack too!

My favourite films (as i write).

Saving Private Ryan – I went to watch this at the cinema with a handful of brazen and belligerent Army mates (ages ranging from 25-30) and we were all shellshocked at the end with tearful eyes and as the credits rolled the entire cinema took a couple of minutes before anyone stood to leave. Admittedly it is Americanized to the hilt without a mention of the British forces. Did we fight in WW2?

Sleepless in Seattle – Easy viewing for the hopeless romantic in all of us. I think its the young lad and ‘radio confession’ scene that does it for me.

Twelve Angry Men – Classic fifties film starring Henry Fonda. Filmed nearly entirely in the one room in real time it shows the deliberations of a prejudiced jury. Must have cost about tuppence ha’penny to make and i’m sure it must’ve been written for the theatre first but tense and well worth watching.

3; Jungle Book. (I think you get the idea)

4; Quadrophenia. (dont you think its funny that its my 4th favorite) (Quad=4)

Agree with Goodfellas, I bet Henry Hill’s got through a few dollars in his time ;)

Scream – Courteney Cox is simply stunning
Momma Mia.

I did like Memento with your man Guy Pearce, but god knows who did what and when. Well worth the effort to see your own mind going in reverse…

Would have to put up Shawshank Redemption. Trials of adversity, the sisters not being very nice, and of course the institutionalized sadness of the poor old guy (forgotten his name!) who can’t cope with the outside world on release. Also good scenes on carving chess pieces.

Am sure there are more but bugger me I can barely remember the last one I watched never mind one from years ago!

    Rounders is a great film.

You ought to play the trf tourneys if you like hold-em Irish.

I’ll row in with Goodfellas and Shawshank Redemption.

I’ll add American Beauty, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and my all time favourite Pulp Fiction. I love the Tarantino movies. I’d also list Reservoir Dogs but it isn’t for the faint hearted.

Love musicals as well – Grease is a favourite.

All gamblers will probably like The Sting – great acting, amusing plot and Scott Joplin rags.

In the kids bracket I’d vote for Shrek as being my favourite although we love the lemurs in Madagascar.
