Made me laugh. For starters, bookmakers don’t take a bet on all horses – try doing that as a racecourse layer at Leicester on a Monday afternoon. And as for sprints being more likely to throw up a losing favourite, that’s complete tosh. Since 1 Jan 2005 if you’d bet the clear favourite in a 5f-6f handicap in Britain you’d have lost 4.3%, over the same period backing handicap favs at 1m+ would have seen you lose 8.4%. SP of 7-2, means you’ve probably got to lay 4-1 on Betfair, then pay 2% comm and the poll tax (premium charge). Soon wipes out the 4.3% profit for layers.
Bernie Ford, Topdraw in the Racing Post and Raceform Update editor, covers the draw on page 9. It’s a cracking read for just the price of a pint and worth that for the picture on page 8 alone.
On the draw front, a bookmaker friend of mine has a theory about Ascot bias along the following lines….if the stands’ side is faster on day 1 the bias can swing the other way on day 2 if they water the track because the watered stands’ side is in the shadow of the grandstand, so doesn’t see as much sunlight and doesn’t dry out as quickly.
I have to say I thought the rail itself was dead, and those who tried to take advantage of the draw by pressing on struggled to last home. Plenty of the horses involved in the finish came up the middle to far side off the rail itself, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the strip immediately next to the rail had been watered.
Excellent point by Mr Delargy there (and I’m not just saying that because we’re related) – and one backed up the victory of Wind Star.
There’s s photo of ‘him’ on page 14 of today’s RP. Could have sworn it was a bird, though I was hungover.
sometimes youll find it in the rp at bottom of result
‘Vets Certificate’..especially when the beast in question has drawn stall 16 of 16 in a 5f handicap at Chester

On the racecourse, when there’s a late non runner, the race is followed by strictly scripted announcement about ‘Rule 4 deductions authorised by bookmakers’.
I’m with Alan on this one. During my bookmaking days I was threatened by a punter after the last race at Nottingham while trying to explain that £100 at 7-2, minus a 10p Rule4, doesn’t return £450. He had about six beered-up mates with him who were all calling me a "f***ing thieving ****". As it was about 10 minutes after the last race, the ring inspector had gone home and just to complicate matters the horse returned at 7-2 in the reformed market.
I would reasonably suggest that the only thing Mini-driving funsters called Ben need is a bit of a twatting.
Mike
Mike, your comments represent "straight talking" and are "confidently" put. I’d even go as far to say that they’re "a bit edgy", "instantly recognisable" as your handiwork, though "good fun"…
…or should I call you Ben
I hear a few on here row in with Peter Naughton and his selections. That guy knows his onions!
LOL
Forget the name (Rory will know) but it’s in Sale Place near Paddington station.
"11-4 is better than 3-1, isn’t it?" – heard on the rails at Aintree today as a punter takes 11-4 about Seven Is My Number with Coral when it’s 3-1 next door with Hills.
I bet he doesn’t get knocked back when he phones his bets through.
Surely they need to have tighter permiterers or……..
…..Sat-Navs
Aintree on Friday is different class. Wading through the scouse WAGS from paddock to betting ring is not the worst way to waste five minutes.
I did two and a half grand on him bettng out of number 21 in Tatts. Times that by thousands of betting shops and I think the figure is probably close to £20m
In the old days of in-running on football matches the delay was only about 1 or 2 seconds (I think, though am prepared to be corrected). This allowed shrewd punters to go to the live matches and lay team A if team B had a penalty, a man sent off or score a goal etc. With horse racing the delay is only 1 second, even though there are track players approx 1.5 seconds ahead of those watching on SIS. Anyone who tried to take advantage of the last-fence fallers at Hereford yesterday will know what I’m talking about. Personally, as an in-running punter I’d be happy to play on a level playing field and pitch my judgement against anyone’s.
It doesn’t always hold that the two are mutually exclusive. I might back a horse at 12-1 because I fancy it and make it an 8-1 shot, but if I can lay 6-1 an hour later I might sell it back to part of my stake. Also, information not availble at the time of my bet (e.g. pace or draw bias) may render my original analysis incorrect.
But seriously…I remember hearing at the time that Darren Williams had actually opened a Betfair account in his own name (another one in the eye for those who say jockeys are thick) and was bang to rights.
You don’t get it do you.
I am not saying they are innocent or guilty. I am saying it has been thrown out by the courts.
