saw Jethro Tull at a club called Mothers in Birmingham when they first started out; also saw The Nice there when Keith Emerson used to attack his keyboard with a knife [wouldn’t be allowed these days, health and safety etc]. On a John Peel tribute programme on the radio they played a Wedding Present track which I loved but didn’t catch the name of it. Bought the ‘best of’ but it’s not on it. They’re playing Nottingham soon I think. Would love to go to Cropredy, sound like a real finger in the ear folky person but I’m not, just go through phases of playing lots of folk, and most bands are very funny and professional. Levellers were brilliant at Leicester [not de Montfort but the other place some sort of sports centre in the centre of town] and I came away quite passively stoned. Can someone explain why tall people always come and stand in front of us little folk at concerts?
was going to say Troytown, but have just read up on the races that he won on his way to the 1920 National, the Champion Chase and the Grand Steeplechase de Paris…..if you allow 2 races but with only 2 days between them and not much else before or after you could include Signorinetta….
Just So Stories…..methinks there’s a book to be written about this…
I was also at a Cheltenham preview, and we were told that AP had said that Black Sam wasn’t likely to race at Cheltenham [for 2007 I mean] but no reason was given,,,,shame if he has got a problem because he was such an exciting little horse. Remember the Ashleybrook race more clearly now, he did get up and carry on running but channel 4 didn’t say that, so we all thought he was still down ,and because they’d interviewed his owner just before the race it really upset us. Hopefully going to the Midlands nh preview soonish with notebook at the ready because it was excellent last year, and combining that with their Cheltenham preview had a very successful Cheltenham [makes a change]. Interested to see what is intended for Neptune Collonges because we were told last year that he would be aimed at the National in 2008, but that seems unlikely now, bit of a dark horse methinks [in a light horse sort of way]…..can’t wait for the jumping to start proper!! mo
has Ashley Brook recovered from that awful fall that he took at Cheltenham[?] I remember how upset we all were at the time, it completely ruined the race for us…
not a band, but really wanted to see Damon Albarns Monkey Musical that was on at the Manchester festival for only one week then shot off to Europe [remember Monkey on Friday nights]…really hope it comes back here so I can see it – and also Tom Stoppards Rock’,n’Roll which was only on on the West End and then went to America…so hope they come back and tour but will probably not have Rufus Sewell [sigh]…..
Baby One More Time – Travis hurrah – that’s why I couldn’t find it under S [yes folks, my cd collection is in alphabetical order] am now listening to it – brilliant!
1989 was the year [the only year] that I went to the Grand National. I remember standing by the elbow and Sergeant Sprite fell and he was led over to stand near to us. We didn’t even know who had won… I remember seeing The Thinker gallop past us. Soon after that I started going to Uttoxeter [my local track] all the time. There was a little man who used to stamp your hand when you transferred from one place to another, he used to say I was like a mother hen with her chickens, of courses it’s a lot smarter now…
or not – was going to buy tickets to see Dylan the other year and someone told me he was rubbish these days so I didn’t bother, and then I saw that documentary – no direction home, and so wished that I hadn’t listened to them…as I said on the other thread there are bands that I would love to see live that I don’t particularly like to listen to, White Stripes in particular.Saw Franz Ferdinand, Editors and Rakes last year and they were all good. Still think Levellers are my favourite live band. Also saw The Strawbs do an accoustic set [anyone remember them?] and in my youth saw Rory Gallagher and thoroughly enjoyed it, but have got none of his albums and can’t even remember what he sounded like! Hitched all the way from Cornwall to London in my youth to see Pink Floyd do a free concert and slept all the way through it. also didn’t buy tickets to see Muse last year when they were available..used to love A ha, no one took them seriously first time round….also Fairport Convention and Runrig are brilliant live if you like folky things. and Maddy Prior used to do a Christmas concert carol singing tour which was magical. Actually did see Pink Floyd at Knebworth and stayed awake, but can’t remember it at all so must have been really boring….really want to do Glastonbury one year….am now trying to find that Stereophonics Britney Spears cover which I know is somewhere in the house…mo
will re listen to neon bible [so’s I can singalong at the concert – sorry thats sound of music isn’t it] suppose Funeral was so awesome that follow up would be a bit of a let down. also am a bit obsessed about working out a new bands musical influences and once I realised that AF were influenced by Bruce Springsteen it put me off a bit [still think they are going to be amazing to see].Also would love to see White Stripes live but don’t like their albums much. Going to see Kaiser Chiefs soon as well. Got free ticket to see Jamie T a while ago and couldn’t go because realised I was @ 40 years older than everybody else that would be there [too old to rock’n’roll etc]. Levellers were my favourite band for many years, and Syd Barrett the love of my life along with Desert Orchid, and to lose them both in such a short space of time was very sad [got a drawer full of obituaries for both of them]. Lot of new bands influenced ny King Crimson so must re listen to some of that…unfortunately my car is playing up so can’t listen to music while I’m driving [keep listening for my engine cutting out] which was one of my favourite things in life….hell, there arn’t enough hours in a day are there???
Just So – I’d backed him ante post and my husband had got him in the works sweepstake – he went back to live with his owners along with Dubacilla, wonder if he’s still with us…..
y’know not sure if one race is enough – I’m still thinking about the Easter Hero, Prince Regent Golden Miller era and wondering about the whole zeitgeist bit, everybody smoking Woodbines etc [am I allowed to reply …mo
re Beckett ever fail, try again, try better [sums up my punting really] mo
just south of Sorrento and Positano is a place called Paestum where there are 3 Greek Temples, not to be missed if you are around that area….havn’t been there for 35 years and think it’s more touristy now, but when I found it there were just the temples and a small visitor centre and lots of lizards….in Pompei there was a funeral of somebody very important and there was carriage after carriage drawn by black horses with plumes on their bridles, a sight that has stayed with me more than most of the ‘tourist’ attractions…..also a few years ago we got the train from Orvieto into Rome every day, and whenever we got back Orvieto was all tucked up and asleep, and I still want to see the Cathedral there! Bill Bryson wrote a book about different European Cities [neither here nor there] and he pointed out places to go that were fascinating especially the cemetary of the Capuchins in Rome which is so wierd; I said to the kids ‘I promised you relics and by golly relics is what you’re gonna get!’ the kids were fascinated by the prostitutes on the road into Pisa as I’d told my daughter she had to cover up as it was a Catholic country, mum, she said those ladies arn’t wearing any…….
re Abigails Party – didn’t watch that dinner party one the other week, what I saw of it didn’t impress, maybe shouldn’t have used Alison Steadman and encourage comparisons. My partner provided a hostess trolly for Christmas the other year, and I must say it was brilliant but I kept saying to him that it was so Abigails Party and insisted that he took it back to his house immediately after Christmas [he didn’t know what I was ranting on about!!] also on the beach last week kept meeting this couple also dog walking and kept saying to partner omigod, it’s Nuts in May [he didn’t understand that either] maybe they were saying the same thing about us??? scarry…..mo
2 weeks in Bamburgh, Northumberland, best dog walking beach anywhere. Never run out of things to do and places to see up there, and we usually try to take in Kelso Races whenever possible.Saw the Coldstream riding out ceremony last year, 400 horses – brought tears to my eyes! Stopped going abroad as dogs are getting old [old whippets ashes now on beach in shadow of the castle, but spaniel still plodding on] If anyones ever walking on the beach there and see elderly lady[can’t believe the elderly bit but better to be honest] with fawn whippet [the one that’s not dead] and v. ancient cocker spaniel say hello, cos that’ll be me! usually go to Ireland for a week for Punchestown then over to the west coast, place called Roundstone in Connemmara most beautiful place ever, but stay with friends in Ennis. Local pub, the Tir na Nog…happy days!!!
re Libertines…the new Pete Doherty album sounds awesome, heard a track a couple of weeks ago on Steve Lemac and it stopped me in my tracks, havn’t bought the album yet as have just got back from hols and hate to give Pete Doherty my well earned money, but what I heard did sound like where The Libertines were going [although Dirty Pretty Things rather good]. Interpol sound so similar to Editors [who I prefer] but much darker, so will give new album another listen as have been told it’s excellent. Never got into St. Etienne as remember her swanning around on the stage at Glastonbury one year [on the telly that is] and thought they were a bit light weight and silly, but think I need to re appraise my view and a best of album would be a good start. Latest Maximo Park is excellent, and all Linkin Park stuff is brilliant. Rather like a folky band called Bellowhead who are playing in Nottingham on Saturday and I’ve stupidly bought theatre tickets for the same night so can’t go. Used to love Runrig so advice on folky scottishy things most welcome. The cover of Hurt by Johny Cash I can play over and over again and also Masters of War by Dylan.Going to see Arcade Fire soon although was a bit disappointed in Neon Bible. Never get bored with Celebrity Skin by Hole.
