i’m not much of a walker but i wouldn’t mind trying five sisters in ireland :)

£2 for a cup of tea is shocking though – i thought racecourses and london coffee shops were the biggest p***-takers when it came to pricing a polystyrene cup with warm stale water and a kwiksave teabag – has anyone paid more for a cup of tea and if so where ?

… It’s like a home from home for me in the lake district however. Away from tourists it’s simply hard to beat. There are so many places in our great country that are wonderful. Any recommendations ??

yeah, Lakes one of my favourite spots, been doing it so to speak for years. It’s so often muddy though for us walkers and now we trek the South Downs mainly as it’s so close by. Being chalk downs it’s mostly dry – firm/hard in places I would say :D most of the year.
I’m thinking next of the Cheviots in Northumberland. Countryfile did a few programmes from there recently and it looked so nice and quiet, away from all the crowds. So, that’s my recommendation

    hi KT,
sorry I hadn’t realised you’d already been to Cambodia. Glad to hear you enjoyed it and the people were so friendly. Always a bonus. :)

lol…I bet you wouldn’t mind…as for the tea, think yourself lucky you can get a cup…I’ve been to the States 3 times now and each time I’ve failed to obtain a cup of HOT! tea, it’s always some ice cold concoction in a beaker, and sweet! :x well what do I expect out mid-West

I can offer you four – will B*Witched do for you?

Or, if you’re an old boy, The Nolans?

Yep Cormack, I spend far too much holiday in either Scotland (the further north west the better) or the Lakes. In fact only just back from 10 days in the Lakes – unbelievably warm weather (sitting on top of High Street last week in 80+ sunshine!)

Did someone mention climbing? I’m off up in Nov to do some hills. Not sure which as I’m not the organiser but if it’s the usual script it’ll be two or three Munros a day, all tackled with the added impediment of a reasonably robust hangover.
Are there any other hillwalkers/climbers on the forum?

Well, well would you adam-and-eve it a thread on holidays, fell-walking and the Lake District. Just returned from one, doing a bit of that, there.

Staggered around the ‘Fairfield Horsehoe’ (near Helvellyn) and a less demanding ascent of Pike O’Stickle above Langdale.

With the assistance – as ever – of Alf Wainwright’s wonderful little guidebooks

Done a few Munros – Ben Nevis, Ben Macdui, Cairn Gorm, Ben Alder and Buachaille Etive Mor; the Highlands are a paradise on earth.

Scarborough is much better though :D

Once paid £4.00 at The Grove golf course in Hertfordshire. I think a full english was £12.50, if I remember.
Thankfully my son and I had a Macdonalds breakfast on the way.

    Hi Drone

Struggled around the Fairfield Horseshoe myself last Friday. Can’t believe I’ve been home a week already! Have you every been onto Bowfell? If not then well worth the effort.

I was up on Fairfield last Tuesday, started and finished in Rydal. Cold, sunny and the views were superb, ideal walking weather really.

I did the well known round of Langdale – Pike o’Blisco – Crinkle Crags – Bowfell – Langdale about twenty years ago. A grand stroll indeed, particularly the view of the Scafells from Bowfell.

Not been up High Street but did once spend a day wandering around the foothills of that area in a vain attempt to spot the lone pair of English golden eagles who reside in Mardale.

High Street boasts the highest racecourse in the UK. In times gone by there used to be a fair on the vast plateau at the top and people used to race horses against each other (all at 800+ meters)!

I also heard that only one of the Golden Eagles now survives and that hasn’t been seen for some while :(

2 weeks in Bamburgh, Northumberland, best dog walking beach anywhere. Never run out of things to do and places to see up there, and we usually try to take in Kelso Races whenever possible.Saw the Coldstream riding out ceremony last year, 400 horses – brought tears to my eyes! Stopped going abroad as dogs are getting old [old whippets ashes now on beach in shadow of the castle, but spaniel still plodding on] If anyones ever walking on the beach there and see elderly lady[can’t believe the elderly bit but better to be honest] with fawn whippet [the one that’s not dead] and v. ancient cocker spaniel say hello, cos that’ll be me! usually go to Ireland for a week for Punchestown then over to the west coast, place called Roundstone in Connemmara most beautiful place ever, but stay with friends in Ennis. Local pub, the Tir na Nog…happy days!!!
