Presumably there was a time in the not too distant past where daily horse racing was not available into peoples homes at all, which, for a minority sport, we should probably be grateful the opportunity is now here to take advantage of, if you can stump up the cash to get it into your home or elsewhere of course.
The criticism i’d put forward of RUK and ATR is for the big race meetings there is no deviation in the quality of camera work or presentation from any of the ”lesser” meetings the channels cover daily. Sure, other things go on like meandering talk and preview which adds filler to the so called build up but to be brutally honest its generally garbage. A panoramic view and multiple HD angles aside, for all the criticism you could level at BBC / Channel 4 / RTÉ when they cover a big race they generally come close to doing just that with a combination of historical coverage / camera work

It looks like need to source another beef or salmon who runs within standard time for everybody to be happy with this race
Not Bobs Worth who has won Grade 1,s since his win. Lord Windamere is just a strange one, I’m afraid
you have to wonder what on earth the trainer is doing 51 out of 52 weeks.
Doing an incredible job to get the horse to win a Gold Cup on the 52nd week is the most likely answer looking at its historic form
At the time I too wondered if Frankel ever really did go as much as 15 lengths clear.
However, watching replays, at the time Bartlett said it I was able to identify a mark Frankel passed and timed the pursuers at bang on three seconds arriving at it – 15 lengths.
I think he was right and, even if others can prove he exaggerated by a few lengths, I thought it was a fab commentary.
Each to their own.

If he called it at exactly 15 lengths while doing a live commentary and having no sectional data we are aware of I think we are not giving him the credit he deserves, he will be a shoe in if he go’s for Britains got talent
Mullins was saying he didnt see the race yet but had a gut feel for the reason why Vautour didn’t perform yesterday when interviewed on RTE today, yesterday was potentially a write off if thats the case…
Des gets a lot of stick but would you prefer him to get excited when nothing is happening a la Mark Johnston? Id sooner Des any day of the week, I personally watch alot of racing with the volume off because commentary is completely innacurate..
For race replays I will always make sure to have the volume on incase the commentator is calling some non event in the race as significant (”jumping error” / ”hard off the bridle” comments when not true) as it is potentially an insight into ”why” a horse may be called incorrectly in the market the next day
At the risk of sounding like an ignoramus but I will say it anyway, Bartlett in Frankel’s guineas!!!?? he miscalled the horse as being 15 lengths clear when he was no more than 6/7 then ended up backtracking at the end of the mile because he couldnt build up the reality of what he saw any further as the opposition had been put away by a mere 4/5.
I do enjoy his very english commentary of the french racing however
That is not meant as condescending as it sounds!

He might be winning all this money, but is he happy????
A very confusing thread! I had to check to make sure the Dewhurst wasn’t indeed on this Saturday but in another 2 weeks – 18th October
In the meantime, a helmet cam video of the 2014 Guineas winner as a 2yr old!
Ah, the joy of seeing a jilted jockey asked for a comment on his ex-partner.
At the start of the season Frankie had said Treve felt like she had had a jet engine fitted over the previous winter.
Fast forward to last week and asked about her chances in the Arc, the shunted jockey painted a picture of Treve as a broken down Lada, probably a cut and shut job, with a flat tyre, rust and a broken spark plug.
Miaow!!
Kieren Fallon wasn’t mincing his words when referring to her as a cripple in his weekender piece. It would be an interesting story were Treve to win the race considering her season to date and also no horse having won the race back to back for 35 years since Alleged in ’78
It’s amazing Al Shaqab could have had three runners in the biggest race of the year and their retained rider was left to take the outsider of them…how much are they paying him as a retainer? and how could you justify being passive in such a situation if you were the retained jock? As has been said above is it not the owners who usually have greatest influence in deciding who rides their horses…
You are missing another one taking nearly 30% out of the market
The missus finally handed this book over to me yesterday morning. Read it in one sitting after dinner (approx. four hours) and it is one of the best betting/racing books I’ve read. He’s a very impressive operator and it comes across as honest/no nonsense throughout. There are lots to be taken from it in terms of race-reading techniques and his opinions on each way betting have really made me look at the way I use each way betting. Very much recommended.
Well done to you for reading in one sitting, now I know it can be done!
Struggling through a few pages here and there with this one, skipping some of the preaching, not a writing style that I’m a fan of to be honest when tackling a subject I see more numerically. It’s a nice change to see something on domestic Irish racing all the same.Everything about terrestrial coverage is dissapointing to me, ”I’m not angry at you, I’m just dissapointed”, as my mother would say to me….
Cut the gaudy betting advertising junk before each race
Sadly, C4 racing solely exists due to the law change allowing bookmakers to advertise on TV (2005 Gambling Act, came in to force in 2007) specifically including the use of ‘spot’ adverts.
Without them the program would not be financially viable.
Mike
I’m not saying cut betting advertising, I would personally prefer if the programme had significantly more emphasise on betting (an unpopular opinion I would imagine), but the advertising in its current format is incredibly tacky
Cut the gaudy betting advertising junk before each race and replace with more in depth market analysis and then scrap the mobile home the excellent Graham Cunningham sits in with Jim McGrath.
