I think she surprised most people every time she ran Gus, They thought she was useless for a long time at the yard.
Racinggirl PM me, so we can talk. Did you work for Michael Jarvis?

As a general rule, most trainers will school their horses well because they are there to win, you do get a few cowboys that think about schooling as an afterthought.
I rode out a few times for Matt Gingell and his horses were schooled several times a week over hurdles, fences and solid fences, this guy took his jumping seriously.
On the other hand, I used to ride a few years back for a Norfolk permit trainer, who would never school his horses. I remember going to school a horse for him 2 days after its first run, the horse had refused at the first, and when I asked if it had jumped previously, he replied "I couldnt get anyone to school it"
Thats not a dig at permit trainers, because most are incredibly professional, but this was a prime example of someone doing it with no thought for jockeys safety.
In NZ the jump horses have to pass a 2 part jumping ticket before they can race in public where the stipes watch it school, then watch it in a trial race and decide whether to give it a ticket. People still get injured and sometimes killed, but the horses jump a damn sight better

Good luck with a speedy recovery BUD. Your right about the drug testing, it is exactly the same with horses too. There are several ways in which you can obtain a negative result, I have never doped a horse and never would but it does go on in many countries. Before they cottoned onto milkshaking, it was an easy option for a person to slip a few drops of narcotic into the mix. The bicarb mix would reduce the effects of lactic acid and the narcotic which was made undetectable by the milkshake reduced fatigue, stress, tiredness. Horses would reguarly go off 10 lengths in front and stay there for the whole race. The unlucky ones would drop dead during or after the race.
We had a big scandal in NZ a few years ago where blue magic (propantheline bromide) was widely used by trainers. This relaxes the muscles and increases blood flow. Some trainers were so involved that they took their own lives.Didnt you guys in OZ have the same problem?.

Apparently he was refused a trainers licence in Australia in 2003.

That surprises me, judging by some of the trainers I rode for down under I thought they gave anybody a license that had a stable and $600 fee. lol

Hi, I was a jockey for about 17 years. Retired through injury in 07. PM me with your details or mail me at nzracehorses@hotmail.com and Ill give you all the advice, addresses, numbers and details you need. I could proberbly even give you a headstart and help you find a job in a yard before you go to the apprentice school. Only problem you have is the lack of riding since you were 5.

This would be a hard question to answer, because of all the factors ivolved in the race. Colts and geldings carry more than fillies, Old horses and higher rated horses would carry more than say 3y olds or lower class horses. Horses running over fences can generally carry more weight because they are older and can cope with greater distance.
I dont think you could say 8:7lb over 7f is the equiv of 8:10 over 8f because it depends on how fit, strong, age, sex, suited to the distance the horse is.
Does this make sense to you?

Felix the Cat was a very under rated Stallion, Sired a shed load of winners from moderate mares but very few S/W. I tried to buy him before Glyn sold him to the Aussies.
I stood Stay Tuned for 3 seasons in Rangiora. Great conformation, Stakes winner, By Champion sire MARSCAY. Had all the right attribs to be a great Southern hemisphere sire but he just couldnt get the mares.
My Halo was a very interesting sire, I trained a couple of his first season horses and was very impressed with their strength and attitude.
Senor Pete was easily one of the nicest looking and best bred stallions in NZ.
