I’m interested to know who everyone’s favourite sires are ? Which stallion do you think represents the best value ? Which 1st season sires have impressed you most so far. Which sires leave correct foals and sound racehorses ?
I’d also be interested to know which sires you think ought to be avoided. Who represents poor value and are associated with poor confirmation ?
Clearly it’s a case of you get what you pay for, but for every dozen high profile failures, there’s a Pivotal-type success story somewhere.
I have a mare myself (in New Zealand) so am not that closely associated with the UK and ROI stallion market but it would be nice to hear of other breeders’ experiences. For the record, we sent her to Golan who shuttles down there. Foaling date should be late August. I considered him an underrated racehorse, who should sire horses well suited to local conditions. Despite being largely unproven as a stallion; and by a somewhat of a non-sire of sires in Spectrum, he’s made a steady start with his first 2YOs down there.
Are there any other breeders on the forum who would care to share their recent fortunes ?
July 12, 2007 at 18:24 #107605The stallion that interests me the most is Firebreak.
Very correct, versatile and tough.
Now just have to buy a mare that would suit him!
Jumps wise I am keen on Fair Mix, although not an impressive animal himself he puts a lot of bone onto his stock and they are stunning animals. He himself was very tough and sound.
The mare I manage for owners is in foal to him this time. She won 2 hurdles, 1 chase and a point to point at 2m6f to 3m2f.
She has a Sir Harry Lewis colt foal at foot (first), who I am chuffed to bits with.July 12, 2007 at 19:08 #107608I agree with you about Firebreak, an extremely sensibly-made horse who could do very well at stud.
Just the sort of animal who could improve run-of-the-mill mares, and a good outcross pedigree to boot.
August 22, 2007 at 20:42 #112204Favourite sires! where to start!
obviously sadlers wells and danehill, danzig are amazing and their progeny will continue to do so well!
favourite national hunt sire is el gran senor
favourite flat sire is diktat
*shame about dubai millennium, i think he would have made a real name for himself*August 23, 2007 at 12:10 #112269I think El Gran Senor has grounds to sue.
October 6, 2007 at 02:09 #118170Are you sure you meant El Gran Senor?
June 7, 2009 at 13:37 #232414Felix the Cat was a very under rated Stallion, Sired a shed load of winners from moderate mares but very few S/W. I tried to buy him before Glyn sold him to the Aussies.
I stood Stay Tuned for 3 seasons in Rangiora. Great conformation, Stakes winner, By Champion sire MARSCAY. Had all the right attribs to be a great Southern hemisphere sire but he just couldnt get the mares.
My Halo was a very interesting sire, I trained a couple of his first season horses and was very impressed with their strength and attitude.
Senor Pete was easily one of the nicest looking and best bred stallions in NZ. - AuthorPosts
