Are you going for a record of most posts in a thread in a weekend??
When you start betting at Wolverhampton on a Saturday evening….

Thanks guys, didn’t have much time to study the race so just opted for the two to take out of the Betvictor and it seemed to work.
I’m going for Frodon and Aso. Younger horses have often done well in this and these two had decent races in the Betvictor. I’ve hedged my bets a bit regards the ground, as i think Aso would like it softer but Frodon quicker, so going for both of them.
I’m not sure if Un Beau Roman has it in him to win off this sort of mark and he’s never won consecutive races. I think it might get softer quite early on today so I’m opting for KEEL HAUL, who comes here after a good second at Aintree. A well beaten 4th in this race last year off 1lb higher, and trainer not exactly in form, but i’m going to over look those two things as i think he might excel in this kind of race off a low weight.
The Tizzard bandwagon could easily roll on again on Saturday with VdN, but you have to go back 12 years since the last 7 yo won (Silver Birch), and only a total of two have won since 1992! Although most editions are run on softer ground which may suit the older horses, you definitely need a deal of experience to win a race of this nature so I will leaning towards the +9 yo guard personally…
With the prospect of good ground come Saturday, I’m interested in Ruben Cotter and Saint Are. RC has been raced sparingly over the last few years and is off the same mark as when a creditable 5th in the Topham last year. He jumped well in the main that day and looked like he may stay the extra distance when staying on (he did win over 3m 2f as a novice). He appreciates faster going and could be a threat provided he goes for this race. SA is a standing dish now around Aintree and although may be a tad high in the weights still he will definitely like the good ground. He’s had two pipe openers in warm Veterans chases and has all the right credentials for me provided he can cut out the jumping mistakes.
PS I thought there was too much of a gap in terms of the how often do you go racing question – monthly and annually, I tend to go 4-5 times a year but there was no option for that…
I have completed the survey, however as I don’t follow any racecourses on social media a lot of the questions were not applicable to me unfortunately!
I don’t think there is any correlation between decreasing attendances and social media in my opinion. This suggests that an apparent lack of information that is only available via racecourses tweeting or posting on Facebook is seemingly the reason for the reduction, or perhaps an affiliation or being part of a community that can be harnessed online. As I stated in the survey, I don’t use social media for this reason is because if i wanted to find out about fixtures or tickets I will use the actual website of the racecourse, or give them a call. Now this is perhaps me being a traditionalist, but I think this is precisely the point – a lot of racegoers are generally older in age, and do not often use social media (generally speaking). I don’t think encouraging this route, i.e. aiming at the younger generation, is the best way to go to improve the situation, maybe reducing prices, or making certain courses more accessible to the public (e.g. better transport links) are just some of the ways that can help.
In the meantime I wish you all the best with your dissertation although I think you can summarise in 1-2 pages of A4 if you ask me!
I think it’s a bit insensitive to be arguing over what rating Vautour has or should’ve had or if he is a true great or not, this thread should be focused on remembering a fantastic horse and what a tragic loss it is to the sport.
Good performance by UTPT at Aintree today when making all, come into 12/1 now…
Truly saddened by this news, he may never race again-my thoughts are with them in this difficult time.
Yes 3/1 now and although I think he has a good chance I may. Is look at Carole’s Destrier with Thomas Brown an absentee. 5th last season but think the better ground will suit.
The only one that stands out for me is Don’t Push It in the National for McCoy, backed it in the autumn at 33/1 and saw it come down all the way to about 10/1 on the day. A great feeling.
Good opening bet, a lot of confidence behind this one on Oddschecker and he duly obliged.
I’m in the Splash of Ginge camp but more out of sentimentality rather than anything else – had a stinker of a season last year since landing a Grade 3 at Cheltenham in Dec 15 but is on such a tempting mark if he puts it all in, which is doubtful! I know the owners want him to run in the National at some point so this may be a stepping stone along the way perhaps.
I also like Taquin de Seuil who is a class act on his day and I don’t think 156 is beyond him having run admirably in the Ryannair off 157 against much sterner opposition than this. Provided he gets good ground he can go well off a big weight.
Nicholls holds a duopoly in this with Southfield Theatre and Present Man, and it would take a good one to beat them. With the forecast looking decidedly mixed over the next few days I won’t be betting until just before the off, but if it is good to soft then I’ll be on Thomas Brown. Can go well fresh and heads here after missing the Sodexo due to fast ground, he surely can be competitive off his current mark. The bigger field is the only question mark as he does tend to sulk if not getting his own way, but is very talented and a sound jumper so can go close.
Thanks you too if you’re dabbling as well.
