Quote: from Arazi on 10:55 pm on July 10, 2004[br]I think that would be an easy victory for Smarty Jones. :)
Me too but after what i’ve said about DM and the response i got i daren’t say it.
Martin
What gets me going is Russian Rhythm vs. Doyen vs. Smarty Jones in the Breeders Cup Classic not that there’s even the slightest chance of it happening. Though not as exciting as Dubai Millennium vs. Montjeu
The Tatts Gold Cup is over 10f. I know Daylami won it in 1999 (i think) beating Shiva.

Quote: from flagship uberalles on 10:11 pm on July 9, 2004[br]Sure we could just get the BBC to use their computer "predictor" and it’d settle all the arguments…. ;)

Could be onto a winner there, but there could be some controversy as the "predictor" often goes wrong and predicts them in something resembling reverse order.

Indeed, i do love a good argument (even if it is seen as being incredibly flawed).
Unfortunately i’m not old enough to have seen Nijinsky, Mill Reef, the Brigadier live at the track (or on TV live for that matter) but i’m sure that they had plenty of poor horses in behind them, horses who if scoped would come up dirty, were lame the following day. Fortunately we live in a more open world now and when a horse has an off day the trainer tells after the race.
With regards to Behrens, it is clear to most watchers of US racing that he improved a with age or at least maintained his form coming into the World Cup off a 10f Grade 1 demolition of Adonis, he went downhill after the World Cup so it would be wrong to judge him on his beating by LDK.
Anyway this thread has got me all nostalgic now whilst searching the form and seeing the likes of Answer Lively, Lemon Drop Kid, Ecton Park, Kimberlite Pipe, Vicar and the rest.
On the subject of hyped 2yos i don’t think its fair to ask a trainer 12 months or 14 months in advance who his Derby/Oaks/Guineas colts and fillies will be, sure they may look good now but will he/she train on? Do they show on the racecourse what they show at home?
Nevertheless its a very big call on Aidans part to comapre Mona Lisa and Drama with Damson, i’ll look out for these two they sound particularly special.
Now for the 10f debate, Montjeu or Dubai Millennium?

DM tackled the best dirt horses in the world (Ecton Park, Behrens, Public Purse, Puerto Madero etc.) and beat them 8 lengths on their own surface.
In the Eugene-Adam he tackled the best miler France could offer at the time (late BC Mile placed) and beat him convincingly, in the QE2 he gave weight and a 29 1/2 length beating to a Group 1 winning miler.
My point about him being the best is horses have improved through the years, if you put him up against Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerrard he would beat them.
Martin
Agreed Kotkijet, DM is on a different track to those listed and probably quite a bit better than the "old favourites" who nowadays it seems nothing can be better than eg. Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave, Mill Reef, Ribot, Sea Bird, Nijinsky.
Racehorses improve through the years with breeding and training techniques DM is the best there has been thus far.
Think they’re being brainwashed over on betfair.
Sounds very British though, "we did well but lost our money".

Quote: from MorgansHarbour on 12:50 pm on May 6, 2004[br]of course Istabraq was hated for his name, and had fewer followers as a consequence…..

Not as bad as Tisrabraq, actually was quite a decent hurdler a couple of years back.
I agree with Mesh (is their something wrong with me ;) ). I’d sooner watch Sakhee beat Wareed and Muqbil than Foodbroker Founder run Hotelgeniedotcom or Freefourinternet (which i’ve been informed is a porn site aswell as a group/listed class racehorse) to a head.
Persian Punch’s run in the 2001 (i think) Jockey Club Cup was one of the most gutsy and brave runs i’ve seen from a racehorse despite the relative ease of the victory. It originally said on ceefax that he’d collapsed in the shadow of the winning post.
There’ll never be another like him.
RIP Persian Punch.

Agree totally Suedehead.
Whats all this about a 2 1/2m G1 chase at Cheltenham, theres already a Championship at Aintree.
I voted Grand National for a number of reasons.
a) its a great meeting
b) its near my house
c) it brings all the scouse women racing
d) i love it
e) its pretty easy to get a job at.

Having seen the documentary on C4 racing comparing Best Mate and Arkle i must disagree with a lot of what people are saying with regards Best Mate being inferior.
He ran faster times than Arkle (equivalent to beating him 21 lengths).
They raced on near enough the same going Arkle (good), Best Mate (Good to soft).
Good horses are versatile?
Could somebody point out Arkles Grade 1 hurdles form please as i’m a bit confused. Arkle was a very big horse and very good – he could therefore carry weight, Best Mate is smaller and the horse has got a lot leaner since the 1960’s and his weight carrying ability will therefore be lesser than that of Arkle, however it doesn’t make him a lesser racehorse.

Very sad to hear of this, saw him win at Cheltenham over hurdles and Haydock over hurdles. Very good horse.
Martin
TDK is right about betting and racing, the two are intrinsically linked. Betting in its current form and overall betting are different things though, a tote monopoly as they have in the USA would be equally as good as what we have now with independant bookies all trying to get 30 runner 5f all weather 0-50 handicaps.
Regional racing is and as far as i can see always will be a bookies benefit. High profile horses such as Falbrav, High Chapparal etc. are always in the paper who’s heard of Huricane Coast amongst others. The lower profile the horse, trainer and jockey the less the punter knows the more the bookie will make

I feel that its unfair to class the stable staff as those who take out of racing. If it weren’t for these people there would be no racing.
I’m not the biggest all weather fan in the world but i see the problem being the quality of the racing. Why not have a couple of group races on there during the winter to keep the odd top handicapper ticking over. Day in day out i see Class E 0-65 handicaps which i can see any day at Carlisle, Musselburgh, Brighton etc. in the summer. When in the UK do we see top class dirt racing?
I’m a fan of hunter chasers and one of my favourite meetings is the Hunter Chase meeting at Cheltenham in April and the one at Aintree in may. I’m sure regional Class H racing will have its followers but the more regionalised it is the more corrupt it will become (see bush racing in Australia as an example).
