flagship
im sure montjeu won the 10f gold cup race at leopardstown cant reacall the name (powerscourt won this years version)
that form and the kg form arc formwould have been good enough in my opinion
July 10, 2004 at 10:57 #93644You’re getting confused with the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh which is over 12f.
The Tatts Gold Cup is over 10f. I know Daylami won it in 1999 (i think) beating Shiva.

its over 10f sulamani was going to trial in this year before a run in the pow

i would say the tattersalls gold cup and the kg form
and i would say on any ground, turf only 10-12f montjeu would beat dm
i would also add inmo if dm had of made the bc classic he wouldnt have won that contest either

July 10, 2004 at 13:18 #93648Flagship why are you concentrating on the last few races Montjeu ran in…..do you honestly think he was at his best then? He clearly had enough of the game by Autumn time. Pointless using that form. Like using Dubai Milenium’s Derby run as a measure of his form. Simply pointless.
July 10, 2004 at 13:23 #93649That may be so, but I think your missing the point. Are we not talking about who is the better horse over all not at a particular point of the season? Or at least in our opinions……
July 10, 2004 at 13:26 #93650Of the Giant’s Causeway colts I have heard to look out for Sea of Moyle. While another filly would be Kitty O Shea (Sadler’s Wells filly) full sister to Brian Boru.
Chinese Dragon is a very nice sort running tomorrow but looks a decent race with some of the others having previous experience.
July 10, 2004 at 14:48 #93653Ok fair enough FU. misunderstood. But at their proposed meeting date, wouldnt Dubai Millennium have been injured also? What date was his retirement announced?
July 10, 2004 at 15:08 #93654
dm was retired in july so using autumn form is pointless for both of them
presuming history was changed ie dm had not received his injury there is just the same chance that what ailed montjeu wouldnt have happened either
July 10, 2004 at 15:49 #93656Dubai Millennium was injured on 5 August 2000, just hours after I had read on teletext that Sheikh Mohammed was going to arrange a match race between DM and Montjeu.
Read into that what you will but at the time it was all very dubious how that good news and then the bad news followed not long after.
July 10, 2004 at 16:57 #93657That match race would simply have been a joke. The very nature of one horse against another outside of race conditions would have suited Dubai Millennium so much more. If he was ever serious about racing against Montjeu he simply should have aimed him at the Irish Champion. Connections of Montjeu had laid out their plan, but obviously that changed when the easier option in france appealled to them more after he had his set back. Giant’s Causeway stepped in then and won the Irish Champion.
I remember for a couple of weeks there, all the internet forums and papers were all craving a race with both in it. Think of the crowds that would have drawn!
July 10, 2004 at 17:08 #93658I remember all too well, and was over excited myself. I remember there were were rumours it would be at York (Juddmonte International would have been easier) and that it would be a one off event never seen before…
It never happened but it would be great if we got two horses that exciting again to debate about.
Refuse to Bend v Soviet Song or North Light v Doyen doesn’t quite get the pulse racing in the same way although the King George is shaping up to be a decent race.
July 10, 2004 at 18:23 #93660
mesh
the irish champion stakes may be a bit more exciting than the kg
doyen-bago-arazamour for starters
allthough i amlooking very much forward to ascot as well
July 10, 2004 at 21:48 #93661Thinking about it, it wouldn’t have been beyond the realms of possibility that Giant’s Causway could have beaten both Montjeu and Dubai Millenium over 1m 2f. He’s probably the toughest horse to beat that I have watched on the flat.
July 10, 2004 at 21:49 #93662What gets me going is Russian Rhythm vs. Doyen vs. Smarty Jones in the Breeders Cup Classic not that there’s even the slightest chance of it happening. Though not as exciting as Dubai Millennium vs. Montjeu

July 10, 2004 at 21:55 #93663I think that would be an easy victory for Smarty Jones. :)
