I too can remember his Topham run nothing else got a smell in only Indian Tonic could lie close, brought back memories of Crisp at the time. Sadly it was the last race for a favourite of mine also in Avonburn.
I thought The Package’s last run in the national wasn’t very encouraging. I’d like to see Planet of Sound given another go but raced less handily and could see the likes of Bradley running well .
It’s a shame the horse has been retired as a tilt at the National had to be on the cards after winning the Becher,it wasn’t as if he trailed in last.
I fear Nigel and the team are worried about the reaction should anything happen to the horse ,it would be easier to give the animal rights people the facepalm as they have little bite in reality .
One can imagine them masturbating during the National as each horse falls they are sick people and since when did society take notice of loons and nutjobs.I think it’s worth remembering that Hello Bud is pretty lightly raced for his age and NTD has a good record of keeping older horses fresh.
If you look at the majority of National finishers they are mainly battle hardened chasers,i think we can safely say HB fits the bill.I just think a race of this stature should be attracting 16 plus runners every year i’m looking at it as a racing fan ,no doubt those on here that are really only interested in the punting side would prefer it if there was only five or six runners.
Had two great runs with big weights in the National on ground less than ideal the sign of a great Horse .
Reminiscent of poor old Easter King in the 78 St. Ledger

I think supplementary entries should only be allowed if safety numbers allow. I think its wrong if someone has gone through the normal entry process then find themselves pushed out by a late entry. This happened in the Derby a few years ago.
Mind you the grade one flat isn’t really about sport is it otherwise geldings would be allowed to run in the classics.
A great run yet again from Merigo, in less than two weeks we have had a chance to see two course/race specialists in Merigo and Always Waining . Its time to savour everything that is great about NH and two great stalwarts and put to bed two VERY UNFORTUNATE accidents in the National.
What a cracker Merigo is, a real old fashioned lovely looking proper NH type.
I believe Eyecatcher ran in the 76 Topham before turning out again and finishing third in the National.
Forgot to say thanks to Nafsasp and I look forward to any more you can come up with. The ones upthread made some interesting reading. Uncle Bing rated higher than the previous season’s Gold Cup winner? I know he was slated to run in the postponed 78 Gold Cup and subsequently won a Topham, but what did he do to rate so highly? Same for Shifting Gold.
A week or so back I found in the online archive a newspapers sweepstake kit for the 83 race, which included a few that did not ultimately line up. I may have forgotten a couple here as it goes, but the once springing to mind are…
Ashley House – we all know him
My Buck/Duck – poor print quality, wasn’t sure which it was. Neither name is familiar.
Secret Progress – ran in a Gold Cup, otherwise, don’t remember anything.
Ramyraja – am taking a guess at the spelling there, it was something like that. Again, no recollections. If i remember rightly My Buck was trained by Micheal Dickinson but sold a few weeks before the race to a Peter Clarke.
Funny how the Dickinson factor had the handicappers flapping ,My buck was one of the higher rated horses in the `83 national but had dropped at least a couple of stones the year later when entered by his new connections.
Secret Progress and Ramrajya were both trained by Micheal Hourigan i think.I remember Bob Davies being a little critical of MD for withdrawing Ashley House due to the softening ground . He was being interviewed by someone on the Beeb and i can remember that he couldn`t understand him not running as he was on form "after all there is only one national" was a comment i remember.

Calgary Bay
Planet of Sound
Always Waining
Le Beau BaiWell done fld.
I was chuffed with Leanne & Deal Dones performances, finishing 5th & 6th, but that was a good shout from you.
I was pleased by Leanne`s run too . Love the mare always a genuine run for your money.
Would love to see her run in the National.
vic venturi is number 40 see my entries/weights thread

On current ratings Hello Bud would miss out if and its a big if they all stand their ground.
Not sure i want to see rain all week ,i don`t trust this lot that run the National nowadays.. I can see them calling it off or postponing if it went bottomless.
I wonder how many who backed Seabass would back it now.

With Katie instead of Ruby, it’s likely to be best price on day.
Yet I bet nobody will top their bets up.
On His Own, Ruby mount, I liked this before Ruby got the mount, must be a live contender now.
However I suspect I’m in the minority on here

Don’t get why Ruby’s selection should contract in price . He’s not any better over the national fences than other jockeys. Tom O`brian ,Denis O`regan ,Noel Fehly,Sam Whaley-Cohen and Jason Maguire are in my opinion as good over the national fences as they`ve got a tune out of less than obvious horses over the years.
IF you factor the likes of Glen Tormey and Chris Bonner into the mix as well who were exceptional Aintree jocks then you would have to say he’s good but not that good.
