The last horse to have triumphed on his seasonal debut was in the 1920s , so, bearing that in mind , Presenting Percy has to be my lay of the meeting . Hopefully the eggs miss my face by a distance .

So , that leaves us with last year’s winner , Native River and the progressive chaser from Paul Nicholls’ yard , Clan Des Obeaux .

If the latter is given a patient ride and doesn’t hit the front too soon , then he’ll take all the beating .

To use a football analogy .

The Derby is the FA Cup final

The Arc is the Champions League final .

Horse form , trainer and jockey , and race distance , all in that order . The caveat being the ground conditions . Most important factor and one that should never be overlooked . No matter how much the stars align , unless the ground conditions are favourable to said horse of my choice , then it’s no bet .

When it all comes together , e.g. Ten Sovereigns at Newmarket last Saturday , time to lump on , which I duly did .

John Berry and James Fanshawe . Either one or both .

Two of the nicest men in racing .

ATR “predictor” predicted the winner .

Battaash , what an enigma . Something tells me he just doesn’t like York racecourse .

He’ll probably scoot up in the Abbye again . :-)

    Roaring Lion for me .

The Eclipse winner has had a nice break since his Sandown exertions and should be ready to run the race of his life .

Having won the Dante over course and distance , I feel that experience , along with the weight for age allowance he will receive from Poet’s Word , will tilt the balance in his favour .

I also like Zagitova . She looks the type tailor made for the fillies’ middle distance races next year . Good temperament and a likeable attitude . I was really taken by her .

From a Scottish perspective : Rangers to win league ( without Celtic ) @ 4/9 , Raith Rovers ( tidy stadium and bigger budget than rest ) to win division 1 @ 13/8 and Peterhead ( solid home form ) to win division 2 @ 13/8 .

I had a double bet midweek – Man City and Sunderland ( Jack Ross is a fine young , intelligent manager from St. Mirren ) to win their respective leagues . Both clubs will prove hard to topple .

Chapman has already been involved in a bit of a contretemps before the first televised race at Goodwood .

It looked for one moment that he might lose his rag with the five young men who had apparently annoyed him .

I’ve been following the Skeltons for the past few weeks and it has been quite profitable doing so .

Like our Ginge , I am no lover of lover of summer racing – or flat racing in the winter either – but I believe if it helps pay the bills and keeps the wolf from the door of the smaller yards , then I am comfortable with that .

I’ve been watching horseracing for more years than I care to remember . I readily admit that I probably have never been so nervous before a race ; well not since El Gran Senor’s Guineas .

Goodwood 2018 was all about Battaash for me . All the Stradivarius winnings and more went on Charlie Hills’ superstar . To be fair , how could he lose against this bunch today ?

It was an absolute joy to watch . Just sublime – too easy for words . The best European sprinter since Dayjur , in my opinion . If you can get evens for the Nunthorpe , fill your tackity boots . :good:

    B-)

I like Urban Fox in this . She is improving with each race and travels really well during her races , and her attitude is top notch .

Danny Tudhope gets on well with her and is a jockey on the up and up .

Hopefully the pairing will pass the post first .

Beforehand , it looked a two horse race , and so it proved . I was on Crystal Ocean – having backed the horse before Will Buick was declared as the jockey .

It was a fine old tussle ; Crystal Ocean lost nothing in defeat and is certainly worth a wager in the Arc , if indeed that is where he’s headed next .

I am a great believer that as certain horses are more talented than other horses , the same can be said of jockeys. It’s all about fine margins at the top level , and I firmly believe that had Buick and Doyle swapped horses before the race , James Doyle would still have prevailed .

In my opinion , Doyle is the better stylist of the pair and is less prone to hitting the panic button than Buick .
The Doyler ( as Jason Weaver calls himm) has improved immeasurably over the past two seasons , and it was his timing and will to win that proved the deciding factor .
