Excelebration is inferior to Canford Cliffs, Makfi, Rip Van Winkle, Henrythenavigator and Goldikova but that is only in the last 5 seasons, to go back 40 years the list would be very long indeed. He is a top class, durable performer but someway below the A list of milers, comparisons with the Brigadier are truly risible.

    Great feat, well done Hughes.

Mind you, statistically speaking, it was bound to happen to someone sooner or later.

Blimey, talk about never confusing a Scotsman with a ray of sunshine…

    Mike

He’s right though, statistically speaking anything that is not impossible is bound to happen sooner or later.

Yes but the probability of it happening, 8 race card, a ride in every race so no amateur or apprentice races, is considerably less than the cumulative odds of the winners implies. As a purely random occurrence you’d be deeply disappointed with the return.

Wow – looks a cracking race doesn’t it! Frankel, CDA, Nathaniel, Ridasiyna, Pastorius, Declaration of War and Master of Hounds. Not forgetting dear old Bullet Train.

Frankel will have to produce his greatest ever performance to beat that lot on the likely ground.

    I cannot wait!!!

As he is 12lbs and more clear of the rest of the field then no it doesn’t have to be his greatest performance. The possibility of very deep ground makes and outstanding performance highly unlikely. It is far more likely that he will need to produce a more meritorious performance. The fact that he has won all his previous races means that by pure logic this is his toughest task on the racecourse as he has passed all those set before him.

Forumites logic – Football should only be the actual football, nobody cares about the managers or the players. Let’s stick a microphone on a mita delta and ask it how the game is going to go.

Some of us don’t even care about the football either!!!

I know that, Paul. I just used football as an example of the importance, in a sporting context, of relations between the men in the sport, and the people who watch/follow football. There is nothing wrong with any channel wanting to create better opportunities for the viewer to listen, and possibly even learn from the people whos horses they watch. I don’t care about new people being attracted to racing, but it could help preserve the interest of the people who currently watch racing. Nobody is going to force certain trainers or connections to talk, i’d imagine there are perhaps some trainers or people connected to the horse who would perhaps like to be on television, and would be more than willing to share their opinions. Believe or not, i’m not bothered either way. However fair is fair, and the racing fans who do care should be catered for.

It comes down to whether making a free-to-air racing programme is economically viable for the television company. Given that those wishing to watch live Premier League Football, Test Match Cricket etc have to have a Sky sports subscription and the interest would be many times greater racing is extremely fortunate. For Racing fans to argue that they should be catered for without having to pay for the privilege is unrealistic in the current climate. Online betting firms will provide a live stream providing you have a bet, video replays are available of every UK race for free via either the ATR website or sportinglife.com. Even without CH4 coverage horse racing is accessible for those that want to watch.

Looking at the dam’s race record and her progeny, they have shown a preference for sound going. Something that has been somewhat elusive in Ireland all season. The fact he made his debut on the all-weather also hints that they do not wish to risk him on unsuitable ground.

He has done a little bit of work, now he is having a rest and next year he will come out to play.

Agreed Purwell, had war been declared in November 1938 the result would have been very different. Not forgetting that as good a dictator/statesman Winston Churchill was during the war, it was John Anderson who actually ran the country on a day to day basis during hostilities.

Does this mean that Mr Segal would advocate withdrawing Frankel from the Champion Stakes if it came up very soft. The Champion will only become what the BHA want it to be if the course can consistently provide raceable going.

Perhaps a crossover on the adverts could be arranged. Promoting a plan for those final funeral expenses when someone has just seen the last horse in a life-changing 4-timer get beaten by a short head accompanied by Air on a G-string.

Model Pupil now a non-runner and the ground is too soft to make any bet anything more than a bit of fun.

Good old Franny, I say. I bet he could ride well after a few.

Take pool. I normally play very well after about four pints. It lasts for another pint or two. Then the advantage vanishes.

    An interesting theory.

See my avatar for further details!

    Mike

The alcohol helps to lessen the effect of the body’s adrenalin. I have a very good friend who never drinks and she has been European Pool Champion twice so it does not necessarily follow.
I recall going down the pub at dinner time before my A level Economics exam many years ago, whether the alcohol helped I do not know but I was the only student at my school to pass A level economics for two years. Unsurprisingly the teacher left the school.

Clearly CH4 is trying to attract new faces to their programme. Making it interesting to non-racing enthusiasts requires a different approach to the dedicated racing channels. Unless it can achieve a certain viewer level then the Television company may make the reasonable economic decision that a Saturday afternoon edition of Countdown would be more popular. If it wasn’t for the much maligned bookmaker adverts that generate a reasonable income screening a racing programme on national free television would not be worthwhile.

Your Leger horse Model Pupil runs in a conditions event at York tomorrow, it looks a trappy little contest and after so long off the track he may be in need of the race.
3rd behind Model Pupil and Shantaram at the Craven meeting was Yazdi, he has been tried in higher company and over a longer trip, not really appearing to get home and failing to beat an opponent on his last 3 outings. He has dropped to a decent mark of 80 and if his only problem has been lack of stamina the 25/1 might be worth a small interest.

At 35mg/100ml he could have drank more than twice as much and still legally driven his car.

    Mike

That is for breath and is exactly the same as the driving limit. It is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

When Franny was booked to ride Deposki in the 1991 Ebor, there was some concern over his sobriety even then. A lightweight jockey’s life is not a pleasant one and his longevity is a testament to his riding skill. There is no better rider of the Roodeye.
