Alan Lee addresses this very issue in the Times today. As ever, he makes some good points
yesterday had an all weather meeting as the principal meeting
Would it have been just fine if it was the same races (which werent bad at all) with the same horses running on turf?
Having said that, it would appear to make sense that one of Cheltenham or Newmarket was moved to the weekend.
Paul/Jeremy….will be at the Kempton evening jumps meet myself (probably). See you there
Mighty Wind is superb and i think the best of his films.
Brianna’s Dijon Honey Mustard…………..goes great with anything green and leafy.
It is rather good. Agreed. the poppy seed one too
as are Delouis fils dressings (and superb Mayo) from Waitrose
as for jarred sauces, Tescos finest tikka is a real suprise… excellent
and although i find hima pain…Grossmans pasta sauces are easily the best …esp tom and chilli
I am going to scour a book or two, but is April habitually a strong Gosden month?
So many trainers are so very seasonal arent they…
Not sure that having a go at Paul’s schedule gets away from the point that it is pretty thoughtless to say the least….
Not that its possible but imagine the outcry if cheltenham did the same three weeks before their festival….
would agree with the quote that Ruby "can be a bit surly at times" but he’s hardly Jack The Ripper is he?
how do you know?
hes never been caught has he?
Ruby can be a bit grumpy but i cant find any reason to dislike him at all as a sportsman. Ultimately, although sportsmans poersonalities will often come through in the way they play the game, a less than charming profile can produce great spectacle. Maradona (a true worm) Botham (bit of a bullying bore) etc etc
We are there to watch them…not have them round for a dinner party
I’ve long believed Venetia Williams to be one of the most under-rated trainers on the NH scene
Too true. And the stable is usually dynamite during Jan/Feb
Key to a great trainer is how well they maximise the opportunities for their horses and how long they keep the animals interested.
Shes one of the very best on both counts
"On Saturday 4 April, Mark Pougatch presents 5 Live Sport from Aintree from 12noon
Which is enough to turn anyone off…
a hugely irriitating and stupid "presenter" whos been wildly overpromoted (test match special anyone?).
I fell off my chair when i saw he was returned at 100/1
Didnt study the race as closely as some years and kicking myself. How many horses at that price have similar ability and are also handled by a superb trainer?
Wasnt he near enough favourite for the welsh national?
I went to Aintree for the first time last year (on the Thurs) and whilst it was a cracking card the place simply doesnt compare to the festival
I wont be rushing back…
75
Unbelievably mised out Newbury!
I hate the word genius butfor me he is the only manager in my time taht was genuinely gifted in a special way…
The key to this was that his style was almost entirely original and instinctive. Also he took stances against the prevailing trends (in terms of football style and respect for refs an national teams) and his actual achievments were frankly astonishing (if all too brief)
others have collected more silverwear at clubs where success is expected. Some have produced great teams with fine resources but its more often than not been in an entirely conventional manner. And they have been predictably boorish and juvenile in their day to day dealings…
Another key element to his enormous gifts (and i think this is crucial) is the way he moulded real difficult mavericks (lloyd Burns Roberson ect0 into a great team and made them great team players (rather than jetisoning them because they made a mild comment in a bio or whatever)
Yes
A genius
Im an Observer reader and liked eddies pieces but always struck me that he would be better served by more space. His writing was essentially more betting orientated than say commentary (ala alan lee) and is that really geared to to average observer readers?
At the same time The Observer have hired the dull and uninspiring miserable Manc Paul Hayward as cheif writer,,,
A fav of mine too, not just because he wa profitable
He had bags of ability and the mark of true class in being able to run to a high standard over a variety of distances. Even when at his best hurdling he always looked like he would progress to be an even better chaser
Whatever it is, something is troubling him… A great shame
Some claim that kings often go backwards a bit after stellar starts to their careers, but in fairness, worth looking at katchits excellent Ch performance as evidence to the contrary
Absolutely stunning……
Couldnt believe how ell Denman ran… but Kauto is simply a horse in a million.
Will the last Nichols sniper turn the lights off on the way out? Some training performance…to say the least
"handycappers" ?
Anyway, certianly the forecast is for a fair amount of rain before thurs. Im suprise to see punchestown pushed out so far. As stated already, little between him and KB on form book and the room for improvement is more than likely…
